Subject: Adapters (was Re: A Big Thank You for the Help)

Hey, our hospitality only extends so far!

But seriously, to the rest of the au list... I'm interested in Nissan
diesel conversions, as an upgrade/replacement for my ageing Holden
179. The LD-28 is quite a common conversion around here, and I've
talked to a bloke about the SD-25 which sounds like it would be an
even better fit in the 88" IIA (the LD28 usually needs some cutting
of the front cross member). Does anyone know who makes the kits, or
have any other info about this conversion? It's probably only cost
effective if I do most of the work myself rather than the drive-in
drive-out option at the local garage, as appealing as that might be,
but I'm right at the bottom of the diesel learning curve right now so
any and all tips will be useful! I'm going to research this pretty
carefully before I decide to do it or not, so expect a few stupid
questions to come...

Cheers, Hugh

I saw in a mag' article that LROC members assisted
at a RoverCross event last year and that a documentary
film was made. I haven't heard a squeak in the newspapers.
Did any list subscribers assist or hear anything about Rovercross?

Subject: Query: Radials for Series III 109

Hello,

It's time for a new set of tyres and I'm thinking of replacing the old
7.50-16 SAT crossply tyres with radials.

Most of the driving will be on roads. Off-road trips mostly in summer time
when it's drier and there's no snow. A couple of local dealers have
recommended Firestone ASR 235/85R16. These are apparently the equivalent of
750R16 tyres. According to the specifications these tyres are slightly
larger than the existing 7.50-16 crossplies. Is this likely to cause
problems? A friend has some 235/75R15 radials on 15 inch wheels. These are
much smaller than 750-16 tyres so presumably maximum open road speed will be
appreciably less than the bigger tyres (not a good idea for our diesel
powered Land Rover).

Anybody recommend any other radials for the standard L-R wheels on a SIII
109? Are radials really heaps better than cross ply tyres as regards tyre
life, noise, rolling resistance etc? Anybody noticed fuel savings after
switching from cross ply tyres to radials?

All responses gratefully received.

Subject: Availibility of 2.5L TDi BMW engined Discovery in Australia

Hi.

I'm new to the list and have been lurking for awhile.
I don't own a Land Rover yet but am eyeing the diesel
TDi Discovery series.

Are the BMW diesel engined Discoveries available in
Australia? If so how much does it cost? Significantly
more than the standard 300TDi diesel Discovery?

Anyone with any experience with the above? Fuel
consumption, maintenance.

All comments welcome.

As far as I am aware, Discoverys have never been offered anywhere with a
BMW engine as an option. The Range was vitted with a VM (Italian) diesel
for a while, then the TDi and now BMW.

While the TDi is, by all accounts, a fine engine, I believe LandRover
have always let themselves down by not developing their own big diesel.

Cheers.

Tony

My experience relates to SII 88s but should be relevant.

Do it. Unless you are doing a lot of cross country work in scrubby areas
where punctures are a problem. 235/85R16s are close to the same rolling
radius as 750X16 but slightly wider. You will notice a huge difference
in handling and noise levels, plus generally better off road performance
as radials are more flexible.

If you have the cash it would be worth buying some new rims to run
tubeless tyres. (but carry spare tubes off road!).

Cheers.

Tony.
