Completely different tyre to the 235-85-16, size load carrying the lot, wouldnt suggest for a 109, too small IMHO > Anybody recommend any other radials for the standard L-R wheels on a SIII > 109? Are radials really heaps better than cross ply tyres as regards tyre > life, noise, rolling resistance etc? Yes radials are better in all the things you mention, the only down side is greater sensitivity to side wall staking, which I feel is counterbalanced by the greater resistance in the tread area. Here in OZ the firestone ASR is that much cheaper than anything else its not funny, I was recently quoted ~ 170 ea for 8pl ASR's the next nearest radial was well into the $200's. I have no idea if they are any good but will probably get a set next time (later this year :-( Oh from a personal point, dont get talked into 10ply radials unless you really need them, they can be a real bear to get off well based rims cheers -- Daryl Webb ------------------------------[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960415 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

NM none of the Range Rover or Discovery owners do it and only one of the many Defender owners do it (they should at least have a clue about what they are seeing, that is if they have looked at their own vehicle). Perhaps it's a matter of education . . . I don't think many (any) of the "yuppie plushmobile" owners know a thing about the history of Land Rovers or what the origins of their vehicles might be, unless they are Series owner wanna-bes. For that matter, they probably don't care. Santa Fe is small and may have the largest per capita ownership of Land Rovers around? . . . they pass each other often and don't wave either. They are just not into it. As Land Rover (BMW) is not so keen about the heritage either (if all the Series cars left the face of the planet they would be delighted) I don't think we can expect them to initiate an education program for buyers through the dealerships. From: kbossard@MGDESTMX01.ERIN.GOV.AU Date: Wed, 10 Apr 96 14:18:41 EST Subject: Radials Eric Peachey asked about radials for his 109. I never used them on my old 109 but the reason was that I was young, ignorant and very poor. Now that I am old, wise and not quite as poor I wouldn't use any thing else. I am currently running 8 ply 750x16 Dunlop Super Grippers on my 110 and am very happy with them. They cost me A$195 each in Canberra including fitting and static balance but extra for the tubes. I just spent a very wet and muddy Easter in the Victorian Alps and the tyres performed superbly and got me through without any drama while others needed to use chains (bah to fat tyred Tojos!). Russ and the rest,
Thanks for the info.
Back firing sounds like the fuel injection system
is running lean. I believe the V8i is running on
a hot wire to detect air flow. As the fuel injection
computer is programmed for petrol, the cold, moist and
lean air at altitude may have confused the
the computer to lean out the LPG thus causing the back fires.
More questions:-
1. Where does the the LPG tank go?
2. How many litres does it hold?
3. How many kms do you get per litre on LPG?
4. I assume that the petrol tank stays where it is and the change
over from LPG to Petrol is just a flip of a switch?
Regards.

Subject: 300TDi vs. V8i Discovery
Hi Chaps,
Its me again. Currently it is a toss up between the
300TDi diesel and the V8i with LPG conversion.
Anyone with any comments regarding the diesel vs. the petrol?
With respect to the following points and questions:-
1. Towing ability of the 300TDi. Wife wants to tow a horse
float. Any problems encountered? Does the 300TDi crawl
when towing or performs reasonably well?
2. Fuel consumption of 300TDi. Reports of about 10-12 km/L?
Economics of LPG conversion vs diesel
---------------------------------------
Of course running LPG on the V8i would reduce running cost.
However assuming AUD3,000 for the installation:-
petrol V8i @ 20 mpg = A$ 0.10/km
LPG V8i with 30% less operating cost = A$ 0.07/km
-------------
Difference A$ 0.03/km
therefore break even point at A$3,0000/A$0.03/km
= 100,000 km
which equates to about 3-4 years of driving.
On the other hand, the cost of the 300TDi fetches
a premium of about A$2,000-3,000 which comes to the
same thing.
BUT the diesel performs better off road with hardly
any change in fuel consumption. And easier to obtain
than LPG I would assume.
What should I buy? Or have I answered my own question?
I look forward to the lists' comments.

Thank you for your comments re V8 and diesel. What's
a LR County? Haven't heard of that one. The engine in
the County , an '85 model, would probably be the 2.2L
normally aspirated diesel which I believe is absolutely
gutless.
The diesel I'm refering to would be the diesel engine fitted
to the current 300TDi Discovery and the Defender series. Its
a 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo charged, intercooled direct injection diesel.
>From the published power and torque data, the 300TDi diesel puts
out the same power and torque as the Nissan Patrol 4.2L normally
aspirated diesel - 83 kW and 265 NM. But one really cannot decide
on published data without input from owners.
When we were in Perth last Feb 96, we tested both the V8i and the TDi.
Loved the V8i for the power. OK with the diesel TDi. I agree that the
V8 sound is great and the diesel is rattlely.
The wife and I are contemplating taking about 6 months off
to explore the Ozzie Outback. Therefore range and fuel availibility
considerations would be paramount. I believe that the diesel has a fuel
consumption between 9-12 km/L giving us a range of 790-1,000 km
with the standard 88.5L tank.
