For those who may be interested, a search of Trading Post On-line revealed the
following: Land Rover FC 101 1 tonne 1977 3.5 litre V8, winch and diff locks,
very good condition, 75000kms, VFG-421, $15000 PORT LINCOLN Ph 086-84 5067. Wish
I had some spare cash but $15K would go a long way to paying off the morgage.

I am looking at a 1990 Defender 90 currently. The vehicle has been AA =
checked and seems OK. However I would be interested in any opinions on =
the price. They are asking $30k. This seems comparable with the cost =
of importing a similar aged vehicle from the UK, plus duty etc. but is =
it a fair price? What I know is that the vehicle was imported from the =
UK, it's a 1991 model, has 72000km on the clock, was owned by a LR =
enthusiast in Nelson and then a pharmacist in CHCH. Any comments would =
be appreciated.
Also I known that diesel engines are supposed to have a longer life than =
petrol, but how much. Another 1990 110 I have looked at had 130000km on =
the clock, how many more km's should it be good for?

Subject: New tyres on 110 !

Hi all.

I've got my new tyres today.

BFG Mud Terrains 235/85-16 on 5.5" rims.

Much LESS noisy at 100km/h (at least for the 2km I drove at that speed!) than
the unbalanced, mismatched Kumho and Cooper M&S 31(?)x10.5x15's that were on it!

New problem.

It now handles more weirdly. They did a wheel alignment. I have a bent
track control rod (someone mentioned this the other day, that 110's with
wide wheels often have bent track rods. Is this deliberate or an effect of
having wide wheels ?). So now its very touchy at the wheel. I'll have to
get a new track rod and get it aligned again. I may wait till I replace the
bushes.

The rims I had are apparently rather 'bent', they needed a lot'o'lead to
balance. So I'm now definitely after some Disco or Rangie wheels or other
LR 16x6 - 16x7 wheels. If anyone has any for sale I'm interested !

I still have for sale five 7JJx15 wheels + tyres. Tyres are shot.

Doug.

Any wheel aligner worth their wage should still be able to adjust toe even
with a bent track rod. If you get lucky the bend faces up and keeps it
out of the way for the next rock/stump Ok so its not ideal. by touchy do
you mean.. ah seems to turn a little sharper and more quickly than you'd
expect and has a tendancy to "dive" off of small bumps.?

If so i'd guess that they have set it up with toe-in, not the correct toe
out.. hopefully they will have given you a spec sheet, should be able to
tell from that. I usually have to read the riot act before the
"technicians" will put toe-out on my stage 1 actually I've given up, last
time I let them set it up, then used that as a reference and backed the
track rod off X turns to give me ~1-1.5mm toe-out... now I need to find
the conversion again...

Of course if you have buckled rims and the "technician" was too lazy to
correct for run out then you could have real problems, the toe could be
out to buggery.....

cheers

Subject: Tyres on a 110

Just had to put my oar in here, haven't really been paying much attention for a
while but it's nice to see a burst of activity on the list!

A bit late seeing as how Doug has already bought his tyres (wish I could afford
BFGs 8-( ). My 110 has Kumhos (235/85) which have been very good. 70000km and
still going strong. They tended to get a bit chopped up on gravel roads in the
Pilbara, but not many tyres survive well there.

I am now temporarily estranged from my 110, having been lucky enough to be
given the
chance at 6 months in Antarctica. Unfortunately the vehicles on the base
here are
(yuk) Tojos, but I believe that Landrovers have been here so I might do a bit of
research on that subject. Would have been nice to bring mine but with a 50kg
baggage allowance it was a tad difficult.

There are other interesting vehicles here, the main all terrain vehicles are
Haggelunds, which are Mercedes powered sheds on rubber tracks. They look pretty
good bristling with antennae, spotlights and radars - yup radars! I have now
decided
to fit one of those to my Landrover! #8-)

If anyone is interested I have some gifs I can email.

Cheers. Tony Yates.

Subject: Tyre pressure on a 110

Next series of questions from the 110 newbie........

1. What sort of tyre pressures do you guys run ?
LR (aust) recommend 45/45 psi lightly loaded at 100-120kmh
LR (UK) say 25/30 psi 'unladen', no speed range given

both from the handbooks (UK and Oz obviously)

45 seems high, 25 seems low. Any ideas ?

  Remember they're BFG MT's 235/85-16's

2. With the steering alignment comment yesterday, I had the guy who was
tuning it today check the alignment. He thought it was OK (He knows LR's,
so I trust him).

I then checked the tyre pressures, and they were over 50 psi. That may
explain the 'floating' feeling yesterday. The steering is certainly
better at 35 psi.

3. With a new expensive tyre on the back door, and the truck parked in the
street, I want to lock the spare somehow. Any good solutions ?

TIA,

Doug.

Subject: Disco tyres

While the subject of 110 tyres is hot on the list I need to start thinking
about a set for my Disco in 225/75R16. I intend keeping my street Michelins
on alloys and shoeing my steel wheels with something more aggressive for a
combination of snow trips, sandy deserts and beaches, and a smattering of mud.
Current thinking is towards BFG All Terrains as I couldn't bear the thought
of noisy Mud Terrains. However, the only time my forward progress has been
impeded has been by mud, so my brain is asking me will the BFG ATs be good
enough or should I go for the noisy MTs. Can anydoby help me with my
deliberations?

How about a suggestion somewhere in between the two like Dunlop Adventurer?

I run mine on 45, they were about 35 when I bought the car and steering was
considerably improved after increasing the pressure.

I use a chain and padlock.

4x4 Australia (Nov '96, p 123) point out that a mid-range Firestone =
Firehawk with an agressive/low-noise tread mix is now available.
There was no word about price and I think the Firestone 225/75R16 RMT =
would suit a 110, although I'll wait for reports from the guinea pigs.

When I owned a Vitara SWB, I shod it with Firestone Firehawks
rather than the expensive Bridgestones normally used. They were
more aggressive than the Bridgestones and showed very little sign
of wear after 40000km - I was impressed - I would estimate 80000km
life from these although a Vitara is HALF the weight of a Defender.
An interesting snippet - I think these were made in NZ.

Cheers,

Thank you to those of you who replied to my mail re 90 2nd hand prices =

Well I have made the decision and now am the owner of a 90 which is now =
on it's way to me (I hope Tranzrail take care of it!)

This leaves me with a surplus of Land Rovers (and a Toyota Corolla as =
well, but I'm sure that is of no real interest). I therefore have for =
sale the following:
1982 Land Rover 109
Rebuilt in 1990 with:
a Rover 3ltr petrol engine, now with around 30,000 km on it since it was =
rebuilt
electronic fuel pump
oil cooler
heavy duty clutch
Salisbury diffs
repainted
In the last 3 month it has had:
new engine electrics, leads, points etc.
new brake system components, wheel cylinders, master etc.
defender wing mirrors fitted

Now all this can be yours for $11,000.

I can also be contacted on 021-650-784 or 04-479-1813 (Wellington).

G'day,
My fairly recently acquired 2a LWB (109?) is shod with recapped
7.50x16 tyres. I can't recall at present what brand they are, but that's not
relevant as they were pretty close to worn out & unroadworthy when I bought
the vehicle. Now they are totally stuffed. So I can't tell whether they were
any good or not.
Does anyone have any recommendations for tyres that wont cost me an arm & a
leg. The "truck" gets about 50/50 use on dirt road/bitumen, & is also used
for getting around the grass covered hilltops (which can become very muddy
over winter) where I run a few cattle. I believe a "bar" tread pattern is a
pretty aggressive pattern & may be suitable for around the farm, but how
would they wear on the road?

Ian,
I believe the Olympic Steel Treks 7.50R16 (Aussie made tyre for the rest of
the readers) are good. My son has these on his Land Cruiser. He seems to
have no trouble churning through bogholes with these. They aren't bad on
rock as well. I am not sure what they'd be like on slippery grass hills.
Any other comments from Aust. LROs?
