If they are anything like Series drums, and you really can't free the threaded hole, you might - back the adjusters off by turning them counter-clockwise (probably done) - bang the drum foreward with a soft-faced mallet (plastic, hide, copper) - carefully lever the drum out with a screwdriver between it and the base. This might take a while, but the drum will move eventually! I've backed off the adjusters, sprayed WD40 on the studs and around the hub flange and belted the bejesus out of the drum with a plastic mallet. No budging so far. Any more ideas ? I just want to get a look at the brakes ! The linings probably need to be replaced, since even on full adjustment the drum can still turn. Thanks in hope, Doug ------------------------------[ <- Message 4 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 961202 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 20:26:49 +1100 (EST) From: Lloyd Allison <lloyd@cs.monash.edu.au> Subject: stubborn brake drums I have in the past resorted to a) removing a brake drum from a Land-Rover with a hydraulic jack between the leaf spring and drum - I was desperate! b) on a Ford escort I did a lot of sharp stops to get the drum hot, jacked it up quickly and removed the wheel. The heat seemed to expand the drum and make it easier to lever off - but was it hot (ouch! - gloves) After these episodes I enlarged the centre holes very very slightly! A problem with the removal grub screw is that if the drum ain't put on right, the grub screw hole can line up with a hole in the wheel flange - stuffed!
