Hello all--happy to be here!

It seems we "plushmobile" owners have been shoved off into a corner. I
posted a little something about the Ford Explorer vs. the Range Rover to
the lro list and within a few minutes got something back, not from anyone
following the thread, but from TeriAnn Wakeman (who coined the term
plushmobile) telling me rather brusquely that I was on the wrong list.

I think it's a good move, actually, to split the list. This resolves the
controversy once and for all. I can't help feeling a bit rejected,
though.

Is there anybody on the list who runs without their front air dam? Does
it make a difference in noise, handling or mileage on the highway? Sure
does seem to get in the way off-road.

I'd also like to know the scoop on winches for the RR. Any first-hand
experiences.

Hello to fellow outcasts from lro-digest. I agree with Chris Boese; IMHO the
split was a fine idea; the traffic level was too high on lro-digest. Perhaps we
can get down to business here without having to sift through 150 messages every
morning for the good stuff.

How many people made the move to this list?

Hi there Shaun

Can't help with the air dam prob but my previous two RR's have had ARB bull
bars with a high mount 8000lb Warn winch. Swapped the bar and winch from
one the other.

Saved me a few times. The reason I got a high mount (as opposed to a low
mount) is I have occasion to travel on "black dirt" tracks and outback
roads. These turn to porridge after an inch or so of rain and you can
quickly find yourself sliding into the bore drain and have the vehicle
submerged to the tops of tires in gooey mud. Being a high mount it is much
easier to get at and operate under these conditions. You don't drown
yourself trying to feed out or spool in cable (and ensuring it's feeding
onto the drum correctly). The high mount does prevent air flow through the
radiator which can be a prob when temps get over the mid 40's C - but this
is easily solved by slowing down.

The high mount has a reputation of being stronger as the gearing
configuration is all in the one vertical plane whereas on the low mounts it
runs through a horizontal plane.

These earlier RR's were an '82 and an '85. My current one is '90 model and
the setup is slightly different - the grill makes it impossible to use the
same bar with a high mount, so I had to sell it with the vehicle and haven't
as yet replaced it.

Other things worth bearing in mind are upgrading your front springs (and
your shocks if you haven't already done this). A second battery is a VERY
good idea and there are numerous methods of providing a split charge system.
But be careful, my very first RR, a '76 model caught on fire because
the"Sure Power" system went into melt down!! - it was a right off.

Hope this helps some!

I take my air dam off if I ever plan to go exploring off road. (don't forget
to unplug the driving lights before you pull it off)

>Does it make a difference in noise, handling or mileage on the highway?

I have not noticed much, remember the Hunter and Great Divide Edition (and
all Range Rovers before 1986) were sold new without an air dam.

I have a tear in mine from hitting an ice block when driving off road in the
snow.

P.S. I am working on a FAQ of U.S. Spec Range Rover model year changes, I
have every Range Rover dealer brochure except 1991 and 1994. If anyone has
these I would like a copy. I'll be happy to send a SASE and a couple bucks
for the copies.

This is all very confusing.

Being a plushmobile owner and a series owner and a New Zealander living in
Australia I have to read mail from the lro-digest, the RR digest and the AU
digest. So I will still be getting most of the mail anyway!!

But it is pretty easy to ignore stuff you aren't interested in such diesel
conversions in my case.

Happy Rovering what ever you drive..........

Whacko, one day after its five month aniversary the rangie group suddenly
springs to life, I wonder if "mums" boiler plate on the main list has
anything to do with this (g)

Ha! You can't escape the diesels Simon, if I find another Rangie with a tired
3.5l V, I will convert to diesel like a shot. I can still get 140Km/h out of a
2.5 TD, and my range is doubled. With the second 85L tank, I can go between
1600 and 1900 Km on one fuel load. The only downside is the turbo manners I
have to keep. Talking of which has anyone put a turbo on the 3.5L V8 ?

I've just moved from the Land Rover Mailing list.

Is there an archive of past messages, so that I can get a feel for this
list before getting flamed.

Even though the list is called rro I hope I'll be welcome a Dicovery
owner. Those Series die-hards were beginning to get right up my ECU, and
thats comming from me whose spent years earning enough money to upgrade
from a Series III.

I am trying to see the bright side of being driven off the range, which is at
least I have a place to share something without the Series owners seeing it
(see signature). It's bad enough having it called a Plushmobile and I did not
want to make matters worse.

What (some) Series owners have forgotten is that, theseadays, it is the
Plushmobile that is the real all-purpose vehicle.

     Shaun,

I have not had the front air dam on my 87 RR for the last 2 years. It
was broken off-road and I never replaced it. I noticed no difference
in handling, or noise and gas mileage.

I did buy the smaller air deflector that was fitted to the Great
Divide vehicles but had it for a year before I put it on. I could look
up the price and part number if you are interested. It tidies up the
     front end.

I also installed a front receiver in anticipation of using a portable
winch (Warn 8000) but haven't purchased the winch yet.
