Ages ago there was an LRO article about these tanks-as soon as I
discovered that they fit into the space between the inner and outer
rear fender/wing I stopped looking-LR has a flexible pipe in this
space to allow movement in the event of a side collision. no movement
could lead to a chevy sidesaddle type of leak and fire-hey it amazes

My biggest sin was not wanting to read about keyless locks and similar

If anyone out there in sprung coil land has installed the wading plug on
their disco, please drop me a line with details. In particular, my truck
is a '95 NAS, if that matters. (The info I just got from my dealer doesn't
make much sense to me.) I'd be interested in (a) if the plug was in the
tool kit or screwed into a holder on the bell housing, and (b) position on
the bell housing it is fitted for wading. Many thanks.

Mike Fredette describes D90 aux fuel tank installation:

 > Now, the tank mounts to the outside of the frame, under the passenger
 > seat. I can just see your brows knitting and you're thinking,"But
 > wait, my ECU and jack and tools are mounted under there."

 ...as is my ARB compressor.

 Either:

 1) I need to take another look under my D90, or

 2) I misunderstood what you're trying to describe, or

 3) You left out an important step in the installation instructions:
"Remove floor and rear (and inside?) panel of storage area."

I don't know about yours, but my underseat storage area is a fully
enclosed box too small to mount a 12 gallon tank. And besides, with a
floor already there, why would you need to mount it via outriggers?

 Please elaborate!

I supppose you've researched this pretty thoroughly, but is that really
the only place to mount it? Won't the extra weight make the vehicle
list a bit to that side? Plus, I'd worry about it in case of side
impact, but I guess I wouldn't have to mount the optional igniter...

Jeff,

When I said, "in any event, you lose the storage under the passenger seat. Don't cry though,
Series folk have been living this way since day one.", I guess that was a little
unclear. What I mean by lose is, you drill out the rivets and spot welds and
remove the entire storage box. This is where ALL the SWB Series truck owners have
their tanks. You're right, 12 gals won't fit into that little box, it's about
  24 in longx12 in wide x 16in in height. As to weight, well 12.5 gals @ 6lb/gal =75lbs. Add
5 for the tank itself and 2-3 for each outrigger and maybe 2-3 more for the pump and all
the lines and hdwr, total is 90lbs or so. Not enough to sneeze at. Look at it this way,
does your truck change appreciably front to rear when the main tank is empty or full? Nope,
the truck weighs 3560lbs but can carry almost 3/4 ton to 6001 lbs gvw. A puny 90 lbs of
gas is chump change. As to crash worthiness, don't look at me! I just work here! Seriously,
the Series truck have always had this setup, and I've never heard of any trouble in accidents.
Most normal cars don't survive a crash encounter with a Land Rover, but the Rover usually just
drives away, maybe a bent panel or two. Hope this clarifies.

Dangit TeriAnn,

I am really ticked off now. We all moved off of the other list so
that we wouldn't have to bother you with key fob, A/C, leather, etc
issues (remember the stink about having to read those obnoxious
postings). Now we find you lurking, surreptiously I might add, and
listening in. We can't even talk behind your back. It isn't fair!!!

Now please stay on your side of the fence and leave us in peace.

Thanks,

Someone was selling a used Range Rover aux. tank in the Aluminum Workhorse a
year or so ago. I called him for info, the tank was from Atlantic British
and it fit between the stock tank and the right side of the vehicle. He said
the tank was not very good for off road because it stuck down lower than the
stock tank and it did not have a skid plate

Apparently so, when GM built it the engine wouldn't lose its prime, but as
soon as Land Rover bought it, it could lose the prime.

I never change the oil in the Rover, never have, never will , so I don't have
this problem, I suggest this method to all of you to cure what ails you.

Now, let's get back to important Rover discussions, anyone know how to
rebuild an aluminum 3.9?

here in midwest, now they have a PIN number with every line, you need to dial
your security code after sending the phone number, if your phone isn't set up
to do this, you need to dial it in manually to call. Otherwise, you hit send
twice, the second time after a short delay. Just one more nuisance step.
Am surprised cell fraud is so big in midwest, rather than moreso in East and
West.

Last week, I took Algernon into San Jose Land Rover for the 15K mile servicing.

As part of the $270 package price on this "LRNA Scheduled Service" I got a
"free" loaner car. Actually it wasn't a car at all. It was a Fire Engine
RED '96 4WD Suburban from Enterprise. Fortunately, this last-ditch effort
by GM to sway my affections failed.

The Suburban Lows: no acceleration, extreme size, no agility in traffic,
sideways jealous glances from folks with gun racks in their trucks

The Suburban Highs: TWELVE (count-em!) cupholders, 3 padded sunglass
holders, three folding tables, a cool digital compass built into rear-view
mirror and gangster rear windows (you can see out; can't nobody see in)

Overall: No contest, Algernon was ready and collected as promised.

That was one of my concerns too -- it's an awfully vulnerable location!

Perhaps someone makes one that replaces the stock tenk in the stock location?

In defense of TeriAnn, I have sat around a campfire with other Disco
owners with her, She did not try to scare or hit our Disco's with
hammers! She actually is a very good mechanic and probably could fix
all our squeeky steering wheels and failing sunroofs if she wanted (
unlike a bunch of us I suspect :)

So lets move forwards ( out to the trails and byways our Rovers were

The temperature sending unit on my '88 RR failed (needle began climbing
into meltdown range). I ordered a new one, and now the old one's working
again. Typical Lucas, I guess.

Question: I wasn't aware of a temperature sending unit that interfaced
with the ECU. Or is that OIL temp rather than water?

Safari Gard makes a front bumper ($650 w/o brush guard, $950 with)
to which attaches a front skid plate ($300) which protects the
steering linkage and knuckle and prevent snow and mud from flowing
directly into the engine compartment. They tell me that they have
differential guards on sale for $150 a pair (they are normally $95
each). They also make a rear bumper ($1150) and a rear skid
plate, ($350). (909) 698-6114.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but the hole for the wading plug

Actually the good old RR is riddled with temperature sensors. The sender
you mention that drives the gauge seems prone to fail -- mine did a few
years ago and I had half the engine apart before I figured out that it
wasn't overheating after all and it was the sender. It was intermittent,
so if I was you I'd replace the sender (a $50 part in the US!!!).

There are also other sensors for temperature -- the coolant temp
sensor/thermistor for the ECU to sense how hot the engine is, the fuel
temp sensor, also for the ECU, and the transmission oil temp sensor.

These days, if any gauges give funny readings or red lights come on, I
generally assume it's the sensor that's failed.

Cheers

I have been told that the thread pattern is Whitworth on the plug and it is
large enough to drill and tap for a send unit..........however, I'm a little
concerned about the send unit tapped into the plug getting hit and knocked
off out in the field ( a mechanic at a shop I visit confirmed this as it
happened to him ONCE). If you look at the current plug it sits pretty close
to the oil pan body and any protrusion could be a risk. Just a thought. I
would like to figure this one out myself so any hints or experiences are
welcome.

Howdy Folks!

Thanks to all who explaned the joke for me! although I can understand the
differences between the series owners and the rangy types, as most RROs in my
area are of the country club set. My personal beginings in Land Rovers came
from my cousin, who owns 3 series types, an 88, a110 pick-up and a customized
110 wagon, which is pretty cool, its got a ford 302 under the bonnet backed
up by a muncie four speed, the list also includes recaro seats front and rear
with a roof console stereo, safari top and custom wheels, its also quite
unusual to hear the growl of dual pipes coming from a land rover, BTW it was
a frame up restoration.

The reason I mention his truck is, that it should not matter if you've got
an old series type or a "plushmobile", what matters is that its a LAND
ROVER!!!!!!!

The best part is that RRs and LRs are still unique! why be a clone and
drive a Jeep, Jimmy or an Explorer, when you can be part of an elite and
drive a Legend!!!!

So! my question still holds; How can I purchase a remote clicker for my

That's pretty much the prevailing attitude among the list members, even
the LRO list, I'd venture, so welcome aboard. IMHO, the most appropriate
split might have been what someone suggested during one of the recent
flare-ups:

	Series Issues List
	Coily Issues List
	Overall LR Enthusiast Issues List

I personally miss some of the "heritage" that was passed around on the
"series" list but is not as prevalent on the Coily list (since we're all
young upstarts in the vehicular sense, I guess) Though I deleted many
"my [windshield, top, doors, floor pans, engine, swivel balls, transfer
case, brake cylinder, etc] leaks" messages since my LR hasn't advanced
to that stage of fluid retention (or lack-of) but it was interesting to
know where to keep an eye out in the years to come. OTOH, I imagine,
many Series owners tired of the Coily owners complaining about thier
A/C, CD, ABS, ECU, MPG, Power: Seats, windows, mirrors, steering, and
brakes, etc. as well.

Oh well. That's the price of progress, I suppose.

I firmly agree. I get a kick watching "Jeepers" watch the Disco ;-) It's
such a "sleeper" when it comes to off-road abilities.

I suppose the up-side to all this is that, judging by the increasing
list population, there's quite a groundswell of Rover Owners so there'll
be more used ones for the series owners to upgrade to in a couple of
years. :-) OTOH, I'm seeing more and more Coily LR's so I don't feel
quite as "unique". It's still about 100 Cherokees to each LR I see so
there's quite a ways to go.

Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 21:47:47 -0800

I was watching the 1993 CT tape with some Jeep-types (feeling a bit like
a missionary in the wilds of Africa) and as we were watching the Discos
flailing about in one of the many mud-bogs (a.k.a. Malaysian roads), one
of them asked why they didn't use "boggers" (Big paddle-type mud tires
for the uninitiated) or something more aggressive than the XCL's since
they seem to spend most of their time in the mud. Granted there was
always at least 80 people close by to push you you through the mud and I
admit the Disco would look rather odd with 15" wide tires sticking out
from the fenderwells, but the XCL's didn't seem to do much good in the
mud they were showing on the video so, what's the story?

One suggestion (guess) was the tires were chosen more for thier 10-ply
rating and durability than the mud-tread. Especially when a fully loaded
CT Disco has got to weigh more than 3 tons.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Subject: brake squishiness/ABS brake repairs?
Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 00:03:54 -0800

Recently I have noted an uncomfortable squishiness in the brake pedal
of my '90 NAS RR. The squish has moved from "hmmm, does that feel
different? Nah." to "That definitely feels different." over the course of a
month.

There is also seapage from inside the LF wheel. Initially I assumed it was
oil from the swivel joint (I've been through a few swivel joint seals), but
now I
fear it may be hydraulic fluid from the brake system.

The owners manual states that any problems/concerns of the ABS break
system should be referred to the Shop, and owner maintenance/repair of any
ABS component is ill advised. How much of this is hype and how much is
reality? Are there special concerns for replacing hydraulic lines on ABS
systems?
Are there special bleeding procedures? Show I just throw up my hands ready
my check book and turn it over to the dealer shop?

I have ordered the Workshop Manual, but it will not get here until next
week.
I'd like to think that I'm one of those people that does there own
maintenance,
but I'd also like to think that I'm intelligent enough to not get myself
into lots
of trouble.

Any advise welcome.

Cheers,
Steve

The Kenlowe kit for the 90 TD contained just about everything needed to fit
it; fans, mounting rails, brackets, wire etc.

The only extra bits I had to find myself were a fuseholder, a few metres of
spiral cable wrap to tidy everything up, and a pair of crimping pliers for
all the connectors.

The viscous fan is easily removed by unscrewing it from the water pump
pulley; remember that it has a left-handed thread. I also cut out a piece of
the top section from the now redundant rad cowling and fixed it back into
place to act as a finger saver, since the fans could start at any time.

Subject: Wynn's AC unit in D90 (long)

Hi all,

As I promissed, I studied the diagram in the back of the
installation manual for the Wynn's AC unit. I also cracked
out my D90 service manual and an excellant book that I have
on automotive air conditioning. Using the 3 of these, I
put together the following summary of the system:

The Wynn's kit is a basic thermostatic switch type system
with a few simple additions that I'll discuss later.
This type of system was used by many eary factory auto
installations and is the primary type used in aftermarket
systems. The biggest differance between it and earlier
systems is the use of R-134a refrigerant as opposed to R-12.
R-134a systems require higher system pressures, better
quality parts, and greater airflow at the condenser than
systems using R-12. R-134a however, does not harm the ozone
layer.

Here's a diagram of the basic system. Except for a few
other switches, (shown in the wiring diagram following)
this is exactly what's in the D90. For those not familiar
with how an AC system works, I'll try and describe it here.

              Refigerant flow --->

               +---------------+
               | Condenser |

                ||           ||  Receiver-drier
                ||          +-----+
                ||          |     |
                ||          +-----+
               _||_          ||
   Compressor /    \         || Expansion
             / \ +--+ valve High side
  ========== |      | ===== |  | ===========================
             \ / +--+ Low side
              \____/         ||
                ||           ||
               +---------------+
               | Evaporator |
               +-------------|-+

                            | | cappilary sensing
                            +-+ tube

The system has a high side and a low side. The high side
is the side of the system where high pressure exists. That
is, from the outlet (discharge) side of the compressor, through
the condenser, through the receiver-drier, and to the expansion
valve. The compressor creates higher pressure and higher temp
so the refrigerant will be able to condense from a gas back into
a liquid and release heat at the condenser. A pressure differntial
is created at the expansion valve leading into the low side where
low temp and pres exist. From the expansion valve, through the
evaporator, to the inlet side (suction) of the compresser, the
refrigerant is in a low pres state. The refrigerant evaporates
drawing the energy needed to do so via heat transfer from the
air passing over the evaporator. The whole thing is controled by
a thermal switch which has a cappilary tube mesuring the temp of
the evaporator. The switch closes when the temp rises above a
set level and causes the compressor to run. When the temp drops
down again, the switch opens and shuts off the compressor. It's
that simple. Pretty neat, huh?

The following diagram shows how the system is wired.
I left some stuff out to keep it simple, but all the key
parts that matter are shown.

       | | +-+ Thermostat switch

       +--.Condensor.---+
          .fan relay.
          ...........

As you can see, when the AC fan switch is on, it sends
power to the compressor and condenser fan relays. Notice that
the compressor relay also requires a ground from the ECU before
it will trigger. The condenser fan relay is grounded normaly,
so the fan will run while the swicth is on. A signal is also
sent to the ECU but, only when switches 1, 2, and 3 are all
closed. Switches 1 and 2 are normaly closed unless there is a
problem (engine overheat or low system pressure). Switch 3, the
thermal switch, closes when the temperature of the evaporator
rises above a certain level established by the AC temp control
knob on the dash. The ECU then desides whether or not to ground
the other side of the compressor relay, which will cause the
compressor to run.

It should be noted that I'm no AC expert, and some of the above
is guessing on my part based on all the information gathered.
There is no "theory of operation" section provided in the AC
install manual. Only the wiring diagram. If anyone can confirm,
dispute, or correct, any of what I have written here, please do.

Hope the info is useful,
Rob

Is anyone on the list familar with the dealer in Birmingham, AL. I live in
Nashville and have heard that they have two RR's at what seems like a
good price. It's a three hour drive but my local dealer hasn't had one for
under $25,000 in months.
If anyone has seen these RR's or has an opinion about the dealer,
please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Tom,

They should be wrapped up under the back seats. If you ate them, did you at
least put Grey Poupon on them?

Cheers!
