The above prompts me to mention that the local Volvo dealer here (near Brunswick, Me) has a couple of used 93 RR's and a 94 Discovery for sale in the low 30's. I've looked at them and they are in great shape, but out of my price range. I wouldn't bring this up in this forum except that there aren't many chances around here to get coils without traveling. First, the probability of impact is relatively minor due to the positioning of the pan itself. Second, the proposed solution is an electrical sensor inside a sealed metal enclosure now tapped into(and protected by) a major league sized drain plug. For it to be damaged to the point of actually losing fluid would require a strike vectored from both the Y axis and the X axis (from the drivers side and up from the bottom). In my opinion, a strike required to do damage sufficient to destroy the sensor to the point of leaking would probably have damaged the original plug/pan sufficiently to cause leakage. A better solution would be to position the sensor on the trailing edge of the oil pan but as I've stated before, I'm hesitant to hole an aluminium pan and go brazing away on it for fear of the wierd molecular changes and warping. The big dog leaks enough already. I was hoping to find another connection to tap into around the oil filter/pump area but cursory investigation did not turn anything up. I'm off to the local dealership to see what the true sizes of the drain plug and the idiot light sensor is. I can't believe they're still using Whitless sizing! Sayitain'tso! This after I got rid of all my Whitworth tools years ago. ------------------------------[ <- Message 3 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960316 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Re: '89 NAS RR coolant sensors
Oscar,
I found the part numbers you were looking for:
1. Temp sensor for ECU EAC3927L (may be superseded by ETC8496)
this sensor is located to the right of the thermostat housing
2. The temp transmiiter sensor for the temp gauge is either
PRC 6317 for the 3.5 engine
PRC 7918 for the 3.9 engine
this sensor is located to the left and slightly below (I think) the
thermostat housing. It only has a single connection to it.
3. The sensor (actually temp activated switch) for the A/C fan is part
# PRC3505 and is located in the thermostat housing itself.
My parts manual is a couple of years old so some of these part numbers
may have been changed.

Things have got to a sorry state if the toolkit now supplied with Discos is just a lug wrench! Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 13:27:56 -0500 From: rvirzi@gte.com (Robert A. Virzi) Subject: Re: Wading plug on Disco Here's a quasi definitive answer on the wading plugs question (thanks go to Bill Marle (sp) head of service at LRMW for doing the research). Sometime in early '95 LR changed the housing so that there is no more hole, and hence no plug to fill the hole. (There may be a slot soewhere near the front of the bell housing, but no need to fill it.) If your truck (like mine) was built in early '95, look at the center bottom of the bell housing. If there's a round 1/4" threaded hole, you should also find a plug mounted to a bracket on the tranny. No hole? You're all set. Older RRs, up to late 80s, had a plug that came in the tool kit. Later on, LR fixed a bracket near the tranny to hold the wading plug, should it become necessary to use it. Now, LR says there is no need for the hole at all, and did away with the plugs. (So if you have an older RR with a new tranny, you probably don't have the hole.) Bill also explained that they did away with the plugs because they are so rarely needed. Basically, you'd have to be doing something like driving upstream in 12"+ of water for a fair while before it made a difference. In almost all other circumstance the water that gets in will just leak out, as it is designed to. So that's why it was a bit of a mess figuring this out. Any mistakes above are from my poor memory, I'm sure, and not Bill's explanation. -Bob Virzi rvirzi@gte.com Think Globally. === +1(617)466-2881 === Act Locally! ------------------------------[ <- Message 10 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960316 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Range Rover Sensors
I know I'll probably regret this but in my 87 RR (116K miles) the only
sensor I've had to replace is the temp sender for the temp gauge.
In my second 87 RR which I've only had a few months (47K miles) I've
already had to replace the coolant sensor for ECU and have had
intermiitent problems with a sticking idle stepper motor. Maybe this
one is more the norm.

The idle air bypass valve (stepper motor) sometimes sticks and screws up the idle speed control, especially when I give it prolonged and intensive diets of desert dust, and needs periodic lubrication. (Note -- I think this is a GM part -- anyone tried to get it? I got a new one from the Land Rover dealer and the cost was $140). The coolant level sensor fails periodically and so far I've been able to recover it by taking it apart (carefully with a heat gun) and resoldering the internals. It would seem that driving in the rain would cause water to be collected in significant enough quantities to cause problems. Or does the water just act as an octane booster as in a water injection system? At a minimum I'm sure the air filter would get soaked. Or is there a drain hole at the bottom of the snorkel tube? :-) FWIW - given the placement of the air intake (at least in a D90), I think an electric fan with a manual cutoff and a water-proof distributor would be higher on my list of modifications for deep wading. On the contrary, that just shows how "reliable" they've gotten since
1989 :-) All you really need in the tool kit is the cell-phone (or at
least a quarter) so you can call the Road-side Repair. When that runs
out, then buy the lug wrench.

Crunch, socket is shattered !! A similar thing happened to me a while ago. We had a rear tyre (a retread) shed its outer plies on the M1. Our attempts to undo the wheelnuts resulted in mashing the wheelbrace into a twisted wreck. The motorway police stopped, but their wheelbrace from their Range Rover didn't fit. They phoned the AA for us; after a couple of hours the AA van arrived - surprise surprise he didn't have a wheelbrace that fitted. He phoned a local garage to obtain what he called a torque multiplier. When this mysterious tool eventually was produced, it turned out to be an old socket with a bloody great bar welded on to it. It did the job though. I subsequently obtained a heavier-duty brace than the original LR item, which I have to this day. ------------------------------------- Tom Stevenson gbfv08@udcf.gla.ac.uk University Marine Biological Station Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland Tel 01475 530581 Fax 01475 530601 ------------------------------------- ------------------------------[ <- Message 29 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960316 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
From: Daryl Webb <dwebb@waite.adelaide.edu.au> Subject: Oil changing... still :-( Date: Sat, 16 Mar 1996 23:30:03 +1030 (CDT) Ok I know this is dragging on :-( So.... I Daryl Webb, on this 16th day of March 1996, do solemnly I swear by the great god of LUCAS that never ever again on the RRO list will I ever offer any information backed by personal experience without first obtaining a reference from a manual. I swear this by the holy flicker of my headlights, so help me Joseph. Michael & Krista Kirk respond to my last posting: >> What about in the trouble shooting section, ISTR a line on "failure to >> acheive oil pressure after change" or some such topic in one of my >> manuals. > > Where, in what manual ? What page? Ok You've caught me out there is no such mention in trouble shooting. However I direct you to the following: Range Rover Repair Operations Manual Part No AKM 3630 (issued by Rover Triumph service division, Leyland Cars, England 1977) Section: Engine sub section: Oil filter procedure: Remove and replace Operation number: 12.60.01 (sorry there are no page numbers in this manual) And Land Rover V8 Repair Operations Manual (sup.) Part AKM 8022 (2nd ed.) (published by Land Rover Limited 1991) Section: Engine sub section: Oil filter procedure: Remove and replace Operation number: 12.60.01 page 12-31 where you will find the following: "CAUTION: Do NOT delay fitting a new filter, otherwise the oil pump may drain and require priming (12.60.26) before running the engine" cheers Daryl ------------------------------[ <- Message 30 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960316 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
