Subject: Oil Gauges

My '83 RR has both oil pressure and temp. gauges, with sending units in the
filter/pump housing. Perhaps later V8s still have abrass plug for the temp
sender, or this is being used as a sender location for some other black box
devilment?. In any case I will be glad to fax the parts catalog pages to
anyone interested. I'll be at work today from about 13:00 to 17:00 hrs. EST.
Fax me at (216) 449-0883 and I'll fax you back. Anytime is okay, but you wont
get a response until business hours Monday. Incidently, I replaced the elec.
oil press. gauge with a Jaeger mech. one sourced from a friends pile of
Britmobile goodies. I think it came off a TR-6. It reads 0-100psi and metric.
I used the copper tubing and fittings. It seems that the Smith/Jaeger gauges
all share the same threads. The original gauge read 0-60psi which is
sufficient range for a V8. PS I like the outside pump arrangement - on old
motors it makes a pump rebuild a snap. I drain the oil, then, with a new
filter full of oil at the ready, I quickly remove the old oil filter, give
the filter head a loving wipe with a clean rag, and defly install the new
filter. I fill the sump, and like TRowe, I also disconnect the HT lead from
the coil and crank it on the starter until oil pressure is shown on the
gauge.

read amongst Britmobile owners is the excoriation of Sir
Joseph Lucas and his fine products. The old saws about warm beer etc. get old
after the nth telling. While it is true that some Lucas products have been
less than reliable (the electronic ignition of rubber bumpered MGBs is
infamous, plus I never met a Lucas alternator I wouldnt replace with a
Delco..) in fact I found them to be no worse than the products of Mssrs.
Robert Bosche, Duccilier, Magnelli, etc., at twenty years after initial
manufacture. Ive owned 44 cars in the space of 22 years, with an even
distribution of MGs, TRs, Jags, Alphas, Volvos, BWM etc. The two LR products
Ive had the longest! When they are old they all have problems. The least
troublesome of the lot have been the Lucas products. If you never owned an
old BWM or Volvo then you never had to go through the heater motor or wiper
motor replacement from HELL. Plus the worst distributors Ive owned were all
Bosche products.

Subject: Lens-o-matic

In Praise of Frizzles II. Another nice thing about Lucas (or Girling/Lockheed
hydraulics) is that they share the same bits and pieces with a lot other
British iron. Get a collection of old parts, strip'em, a bit o' WD40, make
good, and hey presto! a usable home remanufactured component that would make
even Red Green green. With regard to lenses that fill with water, an old
trick is to remove the lens, use a silicon seal product of your choosing
(please, no Tub and Tile sealer!) and reassemble. You may wish to leave a
space at the bottom to allow condensation to escape.

I am told that the fuel pump for the 1995 GMC Yukon is very similar to
the one for my RR - and presumable much cheaper.

Before I add this info to the schematic diagrams on Lloyd Allison's web
site, I would appreciate confirmation/denial of this information. Can
anyone help?

Subject: 1992 RR SEL

Does anyone out there know anything about the 1992 SEL. I bought one last
September but haven't found what options were unique to the vehicle. It
seems to be the County package with additional trim options but what else ?
Is it equivalent to the Vogue SE sold in the UK and other non US markets ?
If anyone has any ideas my email is depuybk@epix.net.

Thanks Brad DePuy

Subject: NH Safari ....

To all those that came on the Safari, thank you. I apologize for all the
pulling, digging, cutting and bridge building but hey, that's off-roading in
winter for you !

Still, on the bright side, we cleared the track for the spring and we will
certainly be going out again. Next time, it will be muddy, I guarantee that
!!!!

We will start putting together another run for late April, taking in the first
track we "cleared" today, and then going on to some more "adventurous" tracks.
I will post ASAP. We will probably still have to clear some down trees, but
that is all part of off-roading.

If those of you that came really think about it, we all used or heads to solve
problems, bridge building. We all helped extricate vehicles, that's teamwork.
And will all helped and shared equipment and ideas when needed, that's all
part of a group of enthusiasts working together, so I hope you all learnt
something today and hopefully had a good time.

One thing I want to point out to anyone who may be reading this, we had 2
Discoveries, 2 Range Rovers, 1 Defender 90, 8 Series vehicles. A great cross
section of the product line, it didn't matter that my RR got stuck, everyone
helped, it didn't matter if the Series vehicles got stuck, we all pulled.
Shame the digests don't work that way !!!!!

Once again, thanks to everyone who took the time to come along. I hope you
enjoyed yourselves and will come again, when the snow has gone ?

Mark

Subject: drain plug sendors?

about drain plug oil temp senders, someone wrote=
"For it to be damaged to the point of actually losing fluid would require a
strike vectored from both the Y axis and the X axis (from the drivers side
and up from the bottom)."
Have you ever heard the expression 'dumb as mud'? Mud don't know about such
things! Schroedinger himself couldn't predict the behaviour of such a medium,
let alone the contents that it's bouyant consistancy might contain.
I assume that the sending unit being considered is electrical. I doubt the
unit would suffer damage to the extent that leakage would occur, but I'd not
be surprised at all when the wire is ripped off, by the first berry bush or
such... I'd not tamper with the plug in such a fashion, and would only fit a
magnetic plug, if one is not already installed...
While I'm here...
Does anyone (Andy Blackley?) have available 'after market' filter numbers
(oil, fuel, air, PS) for a '84 RR 3.5 HC?
see 'ya on the old road...
Jim '84 RR (HC)
LR...quite possibly one of the best machines yet devised!
