I'm wondering if any recent coil sprung owners have modified their lights. Personally, I'm extremely impressed with the low beams on my '95 disco. Very crisp upper cutoff and nice wide coverage. I am less happy with the hi-beams, which don't seem to throw light where I need it, especially on twisty, rolling country roads. Great for spotting owls in the trees, but not so good for seeing the road. (I've checked adjustment, and they seem to be reasonably close to spec.) Anyone else noticed this? Or, instead, replacing the plastic bezel and parking : lights with those from a 95 D90? Thanks in advance. All of the ARB winch bumpers I've seen include directional signals, or at least mounting holes for them. They are good bumpers, if somewhat heavy. Another option: the brochure for the '95 D90 shows a picture of the optional LRNA winch mounting kit; the bumper shown has turn signals (and is in fact mounted on a '94). Rick Larson (on the rro list) is facing the same problem as you and has investigated changing over to the '95 style signals; you should contact him if he doesn't reply directly to your inquiry. As a last resort, with a little cutting or drilling you could mount signals on just about anything. I've upgraded the headlights in my 94 D90 to Hella Vision Plus. They were a vast improvement over the stock lights with respect to the low beams. The beams are wide enough and bright enough that I've decided to hold off buying fog lights, at least for now ;-) I did not notice a huge difference in the high beams. I bought mine from Atlantic British, but almost everyone sells them. Someone on the lro list wrote a detailed description of these lights in the last day or two if anyone needs more info. I am making the following modifications: 1. Replace stock 60/55W H4 bulbs with 100/80W H4 bulbs (Hella's, although I dont think the bulbs themselves make that much difference) 2. Move PIAA Pro-80 130W Fogs from Montero onto Disco, using PIAA's GREAT wiring harness, replaceing toggle switch with factory Disco fog light switch (just recieved it, about $11) and wired into high beams. Yes, that's right, I'm wiring the "fog" lights to high beams. If anyone is considering buying a high wattage aux. light, I would stongly recommend fog's vs. driving or pencils. Pencils are nearly useless except in loooonggg straights, Fogs are geat for illuminating curves, but when aimed up a little, are completely blinding to oncoming traffic. Concerns: -------------- A. Can factory headlamp wiring harness handle the 100/80W bulbs in the factory headlamps? If not, PIAA makes a relay/wiring kit that uses the factory wiring to control the lights, but wires up power directly from the battery using a relay, as do their aux. lights with PIAA wiring harnesses. (About $80). B. Will heat from 100/80W bulbs damage the lexan headlight covers? I don't really think so, but would bum heavily if I melted 'em. C. Should I mount the PIAA's directly to the bumper or postpone the project until I get a grill guard or ($$$) a Safari Guard front bumper setup. D. Figuiring out the pinouts of the factory switch. It is a lighted switch and has five contacts, labeled 1-5. Pin 1,4,5 seem to be connected with switch off, 1,2,4,5 connected with switch on. My GUESS as to the wiring from this is: 1: Power in: (from High Beam feed if I want circuit switched with High's) 2: Power out: to aux. light relay 3: Ground?? 4: Not used. Connected to 1. 5: Not used. Connected to 1. Switch then would only be used when I don't want my PIAA's go go on when headlights and highbeams are on. Anyone have a wiring diagram for a '96 Disco with factory fog's? Does the wiring diagram have pin numbers on the fog light switch? Comments/Confirmation? Problem is the very small amount of room on the bumper.
The mounting bracket of the light almost HAS to be directly underneath the
rear most portion of the light if the light is to fit. Don't know about the
PIAA but hella 3000 will not fit. 2000s are suspect and do not have much
improvement in performance over the 1000 that will. the 1000 are available in
55 and 85 watt versions, but 100w bulbs are ok. Just as soon as I get a spare
hour or two I plan to measure up the 2000 before parting with cash. If the
2000s will fit I'll go for them simply because they are a little larger in
diameter and will look better on a car as big as the Disco

I think mine is the same way. My un-scientific and un-proven hypothesis is that the apparent level difference is an "audible illusion". Your ears are way off-axis with regard to the front speakers, which have to compete with the engine to be heard. The effects combine to make them seem quieter. FWIW - the stereo and speakers are made by Clarion. Because the stereo is mounted in the easily removable cubby, upgrading to a more powerful unit should be trivial. I have read that the newest D90s have doors that stay open all on their own. I use bungees cord between the door handle pocket edges and the fender flares to hold the doors open when I'm wrenching on the inside. > There is a LARGE difference in the sound level between the front and > rear speakers, I have to have the fader set almost completely to the > front speakers before any sound comes out. Yup, again. I think it's more that the sound from the fronts gets lost in the foot wells, so you actualy have to make them louder to compensate. The whole system is underpowered given the noise levels of the D90 anyway. I do alot of long trips with my D90 and must have tunes, so I trashed the whole setup for something with serious power. It even sounds great when the top's down durring long summer trips to far away places. Dynomat or something similar helps too. I can vouch for that. I put 2 55w driving lights on the brush bar that
have a beam somewhere between a pencil and a fog light that I use in
addition to high beams (powered by their own circuit off the battery,
via a relay controlled by the high-beam). This works fine on the hi-way
and "normal" driving. For off-road, I put a light bar on top of the
Disco w/ 2 more 55 w driving lights (angled away from the center) with 2
100 w pencil beams in the middle. At night, out in the dark boonies,
that's almost TOO much light since now, the road is SO brightly lit that
I can't see around corners nor off to the side any longer (Night vision
goes the moment the lights are switched on).
I know, you're saying "just put more lights on!" But with all these on,
the lights (all of them) alone are drawing 50 amps. Rather, I think I
might replace the pencils with 2 more driving lights and then perhaps,
put some lights on the end of the light bar that face side ways ("alley
lights" as they are called by the police). If they are all 55 w, I can
put 4 lights in place of the 2 100 watt lights I currently have without
adding much to the electrical load.

I asked the dealer and they said that the 95 had a 100amp alternator,
which happens to match the Alternator fuse in the box under the hood.
Happy illumination!

(the REP 8000 model). It also uses less juice. Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 18:54:12 -0800 From: Keith Morehouse-WB9TIY <blckhole@ripco.com> Subject: EEC / Fuel Injection sensors I've been having an off-list discussion about altitude compensation by electronics engine controllers and fuel injection systems. It's in regard to whether the current EEC in '95/'96 Disco's AUTOMATICALLY adjusts for altitude. Can anyone tell me if the current year Disco engine's fuel injection airflow sensor measures intake air VELOCITY -or- MASS ?? While we are at it, exactly WHAT MAKE and MODEL fuel injection system is used by late model Disco's (IE Bosch Motronic, Lucas, ect...). Thanks ! Replies to the list are probably preferred as the answer will have bearing on the thread concerning loss of performance at high altitude. ---------------------------###----------------------------- PROBE ELECTRONICS 100 Higgins Road, Park Ridge IL 60068 USA Keith J.
