Subject: My First Land Rover

Hi All,

I've been reading this list for a couple of months but this is my first post.
I've been looking for a Defender and I finally found one in Wilmington, DE. I'm
in Baltimore so that's not too far, I've called as far as North Carolina and any
dealer who had one had already sold it. This is a 1994 with full safari cage,
side steps, a new vinyl soft top, and only 5300 miles. The only thing I could
see that wasn't in perfect condition was a very small bit of rust on the rear
view mirror mounts. They had it listed in the paper for $29,500 and they gave
me $29,000. I already put a deposit down to hold it for me but I was wondering
what other owners thought of this price. I tried to get them to take another
$500 off and they would'nt go for it. I'm OK with this price but, my family is
notorious for their bargaining skills and they are laughing at my skimpy $500
discount. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I am curious if anyone here in the States has had experiance in
retrofiting a Disco with either a 200 /300Tdi or an non-LR diesel engine
with the ZF Automatic transmission. If so, I would like to speak with you.

Sounds like a heck of a deal to me... I had to pay *them* for my Rover!

Subject: Disco Problems?

Hi All,
I'm picking up a new Epson Greeen Disco next month in Atlanta GA
and then driving to Fairbanks Ak. There is no dealer in Fairbanks so I'm
wandering if people could send me a list of factory flaws they encountered
so I can have the vehicle inspected for the same before leaving the dealer.
For example, I think I've heard some poeple say that the rear door leaked
on some discos. If anyone could send me the problems they encountered I'd
appreciate it.

Also could someone inform me on the octane requirements for the Disc. I've
heard it must run on premium. Is this true? That stuff is awlful high in
Fairbanks.
Thanks,
Mel

what other owners thought of this price.

I bought my 94 D90 used from my local BMW dealership. Evidently, a person in
next town bought it for use on a horse farm but didn't "understand" what it
was--traded it in for a BMW convertible! It sat on the lot for a good month
before I approached the dealer to buy it. (I later found out that the day before
they had brought it to auction but didn't get their price.) The dealer was VERY
hot to move it, and I talked them down to $26,500. It had 4,700 miles and was
in good shape with a number of options: side steps, mud flaps, safari cage with
full top, brush bar, spare tire cover. It did not, and still does not, have air
conditioning, back seat. This was back in July 1995 when there was still a good
supply of new 95s to be had along with one or two 94 left-overs. Also, in my
area there are no less than 4 dealerships within an hour of travel, so
competition is fierce. The supply is much tighter now, so $29,000 does not
sound bad. But I think it is a market price, not a steal. If you're interested,
the dealer where I get mine serviced has 2 used 94 D90s--a white one with some
wear and a red one that looks very good. I think the price on the red one is
around $29,000. If you're interested in a new 90 SW, I saw a blue one on the
lot (not sure if its already spoken for). The dealer is Prestige Land Rover in
Paramus, NJ (201) 265-4555. I've seen a couple of other dealers advertising
D90s in the auto section of Sunday's New York Times too.

Good Luck! You'll love it when you get it :-)

Subject: Transatlantic Shipping

Hi All,

Has anybody had the experience of shipping a car from
the US to Europe ? I would be interested in knowing
what it would cost to ship a Range Rover over to the
UK (coals to Newcastle you might think, but I reckon
it's cheaper to buy a Range Rover in the US than in the
UK......).

Any other related experiences would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Has anyone changed the bulb in the front bumper turn signal light of a
NAS Defender? Is it a single unit or can the bulb be changed? If the
bulb can be replaced, how do you get the lens cap off?

Thanks for the help.

I have tryed this. Not on a disco, BUT on a 110" STW. It worked for 3 month,
then I went for one week winter vacation in Norway in the beginning of
marts. I had the
130W on doring the night driving from Denmark via Sweden to central Norway.
It worked fine until we reached the coldest areas in the mountains,
approximatly
-35 degress centigrade. The glass in both headlights cracked. My gues is the
difference between the cold outside and the heat inside made it.
The crack in the glass is only 3 lines in right side, and 2 in left, so I
have been
driving on, next MOT is in july.
Two days ago, I was driving home from a freind during night, suddenly the
light went of,
both dipped and full. I had to drive home slowly on the fog light. Yesterday
I checked the
wiring. The ground connection from the headlights had broken, The isolation
plastic on
the wire showed that it had been mighty hot.

Before next MOT, I will put in a pair of Hella, and only with 80/100.
The damaged lights is the original from Solihull for the european market.

Best regards

Bent Boehlers

Subject: TDI been sleeping for three months.
Date: Mon, 25 Mar 96 11:36:20 GMT

My Discovery TDi is currently laid up in my garage and has been for the
last three months whilst I'm working abroad :-(
Still at least I missed most of the English winter, not too much snow on
the south coast either to play in.

Before laying it up I phoned the main dealer to see if any special
precautions need to be taken. They claimed that three months was a very
short period of time for a vehicle to lay unused and I needn't worry.
They were unsure however if the battery will be able to power the alarm
for that period of time.

Apart from charging the battery is there anything I should do before
firing her up.

When I have re-started laid up petrol cars before I have cranked up oil pressureon the starter first with the ignition disabled. Is this
possible/advisable with a TDI ?

Should I change the oil and filter ? It was changed about a month a
2,000 miles before being laid up.

Obviously there is a compromise between jumping straight in and driving
and doing serious damage.

You opinions please.

Subject: Disco problems

It has been suggested by a few members of this list, not inappropriately,
that with all the complaining that I have done about the complete lack of
quality in my Disco, that I sell it.

I appreciate the advice, but all my efforts to get rid of this lemon have
shown that I will lose about $12,000 to $15,000 in the deal, and I simply
cannot afford that magnitude of loss at this time. Needless to say, I
don't believe that it is fair that the only way to rid myself of a car
that I am only seeking to dump owing to its poor quality is to absorb a
loss of about $15,000. However, that may be the end result.
