I currently own/ride 3 bikes (71 BMW R75/5, 82 Suzuki GS750, 89 HD XLH). Almost made it 4 last month. Had to exercise major self control to walk away from a 96 Ducati 900SS without a sales slip. The same feeling I had the first time I walked out of a LR dealer. Oh, oh... Anyway, waving among motorcyclists is pretty much mandatory. Almost all do it. The HD riders who don't wave to other non-HD riders are just plain fools, and visa-versa. When I'm out riding, I wave to everybody. It's such a burned in reflex that sometimes when I'm driving (or riding in a "cage" as bikers call them) with the window open, I wave to bikes without thinking. I guess I'm a pathological waver. > I have yet to get a wave from a LR owner. They all seem oblivious to the > fact that there is even another LR within 100'. I would think Defender [ truncated by lro-digester (was 6 lines)] > and wonder what it is, and ALWAYS have someone with the same model wave, I > should have bought the D90. Dammit, I wanted power windows! My thinking exactly. Hardly anybody around here (NYC area) with a LR waves. Sometimes when stopped at a light or intersection, after eye contact is made, there's an exchange. Then, it could be anything from a simple nod, to a wave, to a hearty thumbs up. The exception being D90s and series LRs which seem to generate more waving. I myself never realy gave LRs and waving much thought until reading all the threads about it here. So, if you crave the wave, get yourself a scoot. You'll get lots of em :-) Rob ============================================================================= _________ | Robert D. The Fram PH 8A and its copies like the AC Delco and Deutch D 539( 2 for 5.00 where I live) will work on Disco. They are long and offer more filtration than the standard filter but do not have a an anti drain check valve. Someone posted about the Fram PH 16 which was suggested as more suited to the LR. This filter is the same as the one on my wife's SAAB 900 a Deutch D 400. It does not have a check valve and appears to offer less filtration and no gain over the very easy to obtain PH 8A type. I recently bought a case of English made Crosland filters which are identical to LR except that they don't say LR. They sell for 5.00 each from Europarts and--like the LR filter--have a check valve. reading.
DEFENDER 90 AUTOMATIC DEBUTS AT 1996 NEW YORK AUTO SHOW
Record breaking sales streak continues
NEW YORK, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Land Rover North America, Inc.
today announced Defender 90 will return to North America and, for the
first time, be equipped with an automatic transmission. The vehicle
will return as a 1997 model with a larger, 182 hp, 4.0 litre V-8 engine
and air conditioning as standard. Company officials told reporters at
the New York Auto Show that the Defender 90 automatic will have
permanent four-wheel drive, four-wheel disc brakes and a newly designed
center console that includes integrated cupholders and a lockable cubby
box. A soft top version of the automatic Defender 90 will be available
in the spring of 1997. Final pricing has not been set, but the station
wagon will be priced at approximately $34,000.
"The Defender 90 will return to the United States for the 1997 model
year in response to dealer and consumer demands," said Roger J. Ball,
vice president, Product Marketing, Land Rover North America, Inc. "When
Defender 90 production ended at the completion of the 1995 model year,
we hoped we could find a way to bring it back since it symbolizes so
much that is Land Rover. We were gratified by the requests we had to
continue it."
The production of Defender 90 for North America was suspended for
the 1996 model year pending certification of the new engine/transmission
combination.
The company has also announced a limited edition Discovery called
the XD. Painted in eye-catching AA yellow, the special Discovery will
be equipped for heavy duty off-road use including skid plates, BF
Goodrich All-Terrain 225 tires, and a wrap around brush bar with Land
Rover driving lights.
Ball also announced a new Camel Trophy-style competition for U.S.
Land Rover dealers called "Trek '96." Using the specially outfitted
Discovery XDs, participants will have the opportunity to test their
off-road driving skills against one another, as well as their personal
stamina and resourcefulness. An additional 250 of these vehicles will
be available in early 1997 with a target price of $36,000.
Land Rover also announced record sales for March and the completion
of the best first quarter in company history. 1,764 vehicles were sold
in March, marking the twenty-fourth consecutive month-over-month
increase. Company officials credited the thirty-one Land Rover Centres
with helping to create this record sales pace which totaled 5,618 for
the year, 51.1 percent ahead of the same period in 1995. The Centres
alone accounted for 42 percent of sales out of the 97 U.S. dealerships.
There will be a total of approximately 70 Land Rover Centres by year
end, company officials said.
This remarkable sales growth has led Land Rover to begin
construction on a new $10 million national headquarters complex in
Lanham, Maryland. A 60,000 square foot building will be joined by a
companion facility for Land Rover University, the training and
development arm of Land Rover North America. Both sites will feature
their own off-road demonstration tracks designed by John Cummings, who
was responsible for landscape composition at EuroDisney.

I have used the Fram PH 8A long type for quite a while now and >have had n oproblems with them. John Friedman There should be two valves in the filter. One at the closed end of the filter (at the bottom of the hole when you look inside) and one around the edge covering the circle of little intake holes. The one covering the the little holes is the anti-drainback valve. It's made of rubber and appears to look like a large washer. I have never seen a filter without this valve. This stops the oil from flowing back into the sump so there is oil availible immediatly at startup. The valve at the top is the filter element bypass valve. If the filter clogs up for some reason it will open to allow unfiltered oil to pass to the bearings, etc. I use the PH8A on my IIA with the spin on adapter. The American made ones appear not to have bypass valves wereas the Canadian ones do. I use the Casite version of the PH8A. 73 Chris "Filter Man" Youngson West Vancouver, BC, Canada 1965 109 ------------------------------[ <- Message 19 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960405 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I talked to TireRack (or one of those mail-order tire sellers) about getting studded snows for my Disco. They were incredibly uninformed. 1. They had no clue how to substitute anything for the unusual stock tire size on the NAS Disco (235/70-16?). 2. Their information was incorrect about the studdability of certain tires. 3. It was sort of like talking to a rock. I think these places are useful if you know exactly what you want, and want to shave a few dollars. I've found, however, that I usually can get within $35 or so (set of 4, taking into account mounting/balancing costs) of what I can buy for locally, and frankly would rather support the locally owned shops. Gonna take a hack saw to my Disco.
Don't worry Dave, the first cut is the only one that hurts. ;-) If you do
it with the end cap on the truck, be careful not to bend the bracket one
the outside. The end cap is much less firmly attached there.
Besides, a new end cap only costs about $35.

Subject: Oil filter, Oil pump, Water pump and front cover - Rover V8
Date: Fri, 5 Apr 1996 13:51:42 +-200
------ =_NextPart_000_01BB22F7.1FE098E0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
The discussions regarding oil filter/oil change etc has prompted me to =
retype the following from Land Rovers "V8 Engine Service Training =
Manual" part no. SMR678TM. It refers to drawings which are very useful =
as they are the only ones I have seen showing principle arrangement for =
this engine. For those particularly interested I can perhaps fax a copy =
directly.
Oil Pump, Water Pump and Front Cover Summary.
It should be noted that a number of different types of front cover and =
water pumps have been fitted to the V8 engine to accommodate different =
engine installations, but the major changes took place at engine suffix =
F when the oil pump gears were made longer to increase the pump =
capacity. This was done to improve lubrication of the timing chain and =
distributor drive gear which involved redesigning the front camshaft =
bearing, spacer and drive gear seen in Fig. 73.
At the same time the distributor was fitted with a swivel drive coupling =
to the oil pump seen in Fig. 74. The oil filter by-pass valve was moved =
from being housed inside the pump cover and is now located inside the =
oil filter.
These changes which effect the oil flow through the pump cover and =
filter warrant explanation. Explanation see Figs. 75 and 76.
Assuming that the filter is not blocked, then oil will be drawn from the =
engine sump into the pump, which forces it through the filter to the =
engine bearings etc.
The quantity of oil which the pump forces through the system is always =
slightly greater than the leakage at the bearings, tappets, =
rockershafts, camshaft and timing chain, provided of course none of =
these components is excessively worn.
Assuming none of the parts are worn, then the system will be =
pressurised. This pressure is controlled by the relief valve ("RV" on =
Figs. 75 and 76) which opens to allow excess oil to return to the pump =
inlet.
If the filter becomes blocked the by-pass valve "BV" will open to =
maintain a supply of lubrication to the bearings etc. The by-pass valve =
is in the pump body on early models as seen in Fig. 75, but is part of =
the filter on suffix "F" models and onwards seen in Fig. 76.
The filter threads are different on each type so it is not possible to =
screw an incorrect filter into position. However, care should be taken =
to use only genuine Land Rover parts, as spurious parts filter =
manufacturers are not always aware of such changes.
When changing the oil filter make sure that the pressure relief strainer =
"S" in Figs. 75 & 76 is clean. Blockage of this strainer can cause high =
engine oil pressure, which as well as resulting in oil leaks, may be the =
cause of loss of engine power. Excessive oil pressure can cause the =
tappets to hydraulic and hold the valves open.
One other important point is that when changing the engine oil it is =
advisable to drain the sump and refill with fresh oil before removing =
the filter. This is a simple precaution to prevent an air lock =
developing in the lubrication system.
Fig. 77 shows the relationship between the filter and the strainer in =
the sump. Where it can be seen that if the sump drain plug and filter =
are both removed there is a possibility of the interconnecting gallery =
draining of oil. Once the gallery has drained - and an airlock has =
developed - it will be necessary to either pack the pump gear recess =
with "Petroleum Jelly" or pump oil into the system via one of the plug =
holes also seen in Fig. 77 to ensure the system will reprime.
A new filter should always be filled with oil before fitting, which =
assists in rapid prime, even if the gallery has not "Airlocked".

There are due to be 2 more locations in Mass, on the Northshore LRMW
is teaming up with Acura/Isuzu in Peabody to sell cars. AIP has been
practicing with 2nd hand units for a while, no idea when that will
officially open, but Jim Pappas may know.
Also, LRMW is planning on another outlet South of Boston, in the
Hanover/Marshfield etc area.

A local speedometer shop custom made an adapter to correct the speedometer and odometer. Total cost was about $30. The speedometer was deadon up to 70 mph and only off a couple of miles per hour at 90 mph. With the adapter, the guages won't need to be re-calibrated. Now, granted this is a "common" Ford versus the Land Rover, but I haven't actually checked it out, need to pay off the Discovery first. John P. ====================================== --------------------- Forwarded message: From: BRITPAC@aol.com Resent-from: daemon@ridgecrest.ca.us Reply-to: mendo_recce@ridgecrest.ca.us To: mendo_recce@ridgecrest.ca.us CC: BRITPAC@aol.com Date: 96-04-04 14:26:48 EST Those of you familiar with Four Wheeler Magazine's "Top Truck" competetion may have lamented the lack of Land Rover participation. Now's your chance to fix that! For 1996, Don Mousseau (Member of SoCal Land Rovers) has made the final 60 cut (out of 200 entrants), and his truck appears in the May 1996 issue (#49). His '94 Defender 90 is equipped with a plastic hard top, ARB bumper with Warn 10,000, 4:70 gears (Series stuff) with Air Lockers, steering protector, and diff guards (all supplied by BP). He's also added other goodies, like homeade rockers (tread plate and box tube) and Ready Air system. Here's where you come in: he needs your vote to make it into the final competetion! The competetiors are chosen by popular vote, but you MUST buy an issue and send in an ORIGINAL ballot for it to count (cheap ploy, but it's worth it; there's also a long term road test article on Discovery). Don will be up against things like V8 Toyotas, big ass Blazers, Jeeps (all variations), old Chevy and Ford pickups, a Unimog, Scouts, and some pretty serious customs. Your ballot needs to be mailed in by May 1, 1996, so don't hesitate. Only 10 finalists will be chosen, and we really want a Land Rover represented, don't we? Don is convinced he can win the thing. The course is a tough one, and Don is no stranger to off road (old Toyota guy), and has already had the D90 on it's side! The course requires a good balance of abilities, and while he dosen't think he can win every section, he believes the attributes of the Land Rover will allow him to finish near the top in all areas, thereby scoring a win on points. This would be especially sweet, since the D90 would be closer to stock than almost any other entrant. Won't you please help in getting him in? Buy the magazine, vote for number 49, and send it in right away. Thanks! Steve/BRITPAC Please forward this to other lists and groups. ------------------------------[ <- Message 29 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960405 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
