Subject: Re: Re[2]: Another LR Dealer

Well I've done it. With all this hoopla over new land rover dealerships, new
land rover centres, land rover building a whole new building, increasing
sales everywhere you look, reintroducing the 90 (even if they did plush it
out), and especially that post from Doug about riding in a LR reps tricked
out D90 (that HAD to be a perk, they can't pay those guys that much...can
they??), I sent their human resources department a resume. The only bummer
is that all positions are probably in MD, and I'm in WI. But, hey, with a
tricked out D90, I'd love the commute!!

John, D90, soon to be LR-employed as a roving representative at $48K/year
with full benefits, generous expense account, company supplied 97 SW auto D90

one!) and responsibilities including attendance at all east and midwest Land
Rover Events! (Yee-Haw! ooops, that's what the J**pers say...sorry.)

John,
I tried this. Tracked down the sales manager for the RR dealer in
Cleveland (this was just before I was moving there in '92) and wrote
him a letter, skipped the personel dept.
I managed to get three interviews, then was taken in to interview
with the owner. Made the mistake of saying I thought RR were great
products and could out-perform any other 4x4. He said he thought that
was nice but wanted someone who would sell it as a status symbol, and
thanks but no thanks.
FWIW the sales manager said he was sorry and that if they had the
location they wanted (which would include an off-road course) I'd be
the person for the job. Guess I find it hard to convince people to
spend money on a status symbol. Oh, well. Almost. :-)
Good luck though.

Congrats on the new job!! Its great to have real enthusiasts as LR reps as
opposed to "auto industry career" types.

         Thanks Paul,

You're absolutely right. You have to know what
you want and it depends on who you talk to at the
mailorder places. Some of those people are real
knowledgeable and others are dumber that a stick
(no flames please....these people just need more
experience). As it turns out I found a tire locally
that should work well. It's a Kelly Safari AWR
         (215-85-16) for $86.95ea and that includes m&b.
I have to add though that for passenger tires I
will continue to use the mailorder route and save a
couple of bucks. As the saying goes...if you save a
million here and a million there...Pretty soon
you'll have a lot of money saved. Thanks for the
         reply.

                              Regards,
                                    Rick

Is this 4.2 litre ECU chip something that can help the 3.9 litre
engine?

I've been reading the various posts about jacking and recovery points on =
RR/Disco's for some time now, and though it might be worthwhile to tell =
you about a company here in Scotland who produces a range of products =
for Off-Road use. Among them are a series of high lift jacking/recovery =
points which bolt on without requiring any modification to body, bumper =
or spoiler (they also stop Hi-lifts slipping, whilst still allowing =
vehicle to be canted for recovery.)
The company is : NSC Design Ltd.

Phone no (Int code) + 44 1875 815400 (also has fax on line)

Contact name is Nick Cole.

Nick knows more about what you can do with a Discovery off-road than =
anyone else I've met. All his gear has been tested on expeditions to =
Iceland. His Husky winch fitment is something to behold....and he's even =
written a book on winching and recovery techniques (are there no end to =
this man's talents?).
Seriously tho', he already exports these fittings, and other gubbins all =
over the world, and best of all he's pretty cheap.

He doesn't have e-mail, but if necessary I'll take it for him.

Per the Fram spec book, both the PH16 and PH8 have the anti-drainback valve.
Both these filters (depending on model year) are LR approved now. I don't know
of other brands, but I suspect Deutsch isn't on their list.

I suppose the valve's to keep the oil in your engine instead of siphoning back
to the sump each time you shut down. I can't speak of other brands, but Fram's
specs are in the back of the big Fram book found in most car parts places (Not
Pep Boy or AutoZone--they have abbreviated versions). I have run Fram PH16 in
all my Alfa V-6's per the recommendation of the dealer and mfr. Extremely high
volume and high rpm engines. No problems, ever. Don't be fooled with the size of
the can, it's what's inside that counts.

I learned from my dealer that there is a recall to replace the crankshaft sprocket on 95
Disco. They had to order the part but when it comes in I will report further. It involves
removal of front engine cover, replacement of crankshaft sprocket and fitting new gasket..

Subject: Bright Dims?

I've had a 94 Disco for over a year and a half, I truly love it.
There is one thing that is a constant irritant: opposing
traffic always blink their brights or blind me purposely when I only
have my dims on. When I blink my brights they usually sheepishly
defer back to their dims. Does anyone else have this problem or know
what could it be? Should I have the lights adjusted? (The only
certified dealer is 4.5 hrs away)

Larry..... Possibly Northern Michigan's only LRO!

Me too, I had the dealer realign them, and that helped. (aligning the
the headlamps isn't a big deal) but it seems to be a problem only when I
have stuff in the back changing the attitude of the body just enough to
point the head lamps up slightly. That and the fact that the halogen
lamps are brighter than the old tungsten sealed beams is probably
irritating to oncoming traffic. Though not nearly as irritating as the
60W Hi beams and 55W driving lights, I've added, I'm sure!
