From: Mark.Kraieski@mailport.delta-air.com Date: 8 Apr 96 13:11:35 -0400 Subject: Update: PowerTrax " Command Locker" I had posted about 2 months ago that PowerTrax, the company that makes Lock-Right and Performance Locker locking differentials, would be introducing a switch selectable locker based on electromechanical means rather than air pneumatic (ala ARB). The information was originally reported in 4 Wheel & Off Road. I placed a call to PowerTrax today (714/545-7400) to get an update. Looks like the patent process is taking longer than expected and they are still "6 to 9 months" from shipping. It is unclear when the Land Rover / Range Rover version will be available. after another vehicle had to be winched out. However, with no rain and the
temperature rising quickly past the 100 degree mark, the red clay roads soon
dried out. In contrast to the past few days, there were no major river
crossings, and no bridges to repair.

driving, but rather an unexpected visit to Dyak longhouse. Functioning as
the convoy's "sweep", they stopped at a village and were invited to visit
with a local family. As one of the Swiss journalists spoke a bit of
Indonesian and the group was able to sample local cuisine and were impressed
by their hospitality.

still on schedule, for now. However, the rains returned and the route ahead
has only been scouted from the air. Once again, vehicles began to slide and
skate, and before long, another collapsed bridge was encountered. Ken
Cameron's exceptional skill with a chain saw was evident, as the American
team lead the reconstruction of this bridge, and in just five hours, all 38
vehicles were across.

discovered just 2 km down the road. Deemed beyond repair, the teams were
forced to drive down into the river and winch themselves up the 45 degree
bank on the other side. Participants worked through the night and it was 5
AM before all were across. Some members took the opportunity of the delay
to bathe in the river, though reports of a large snake swimming nearby kept
most out.

Barito, a major river crossing and bridge of 30 meters. TUnfortunately, the
bridge had been destroyed less than a week earlier by floods. Though the
team worked for several hours to get a vehicle across, it was deemed futile,
and it was decided to detour 3 km upstream and call in the raft unit.
>Meanwhile, back at the bridge bypass, things were going from bad to worse.
>From: rover@pinn.net (Alexander P. Grice)
A severe thunderstorm destroyed the vehicles' exit route from the river and
mud flows were making the crossing almost impossible. Work will continue
through the night to catch up with the lead units at the rafting point.

I've done hub seals before but have never ventured [ truncated by lro-digester (was 8 lines)] > the impact type - am I likely to damage the ball joints when > disconnecting them? In the past I've had RRO get upset at me giving advice on the basis that my 110 is basically the same. I've recently done a front overhaul on my '85 110 though, so here are my recollections. As far as I know, the only difference is that a 110 uses swivel pins for the top swivel pivot (with a tapered roller bearing at bottom), whereas RR has bearings top & bottom. Apologies if there are any other major differences. There are 3 tie rod ends (ball joints) to be removed. Two of mine came free, (& undamaged)by the following procedure: Remove the split cotter pin, remove the castellated nut and put it on backwards (the castellated side first). Screw it on far enough so that the clean nut face just protects the ball joint thread, and hit the NUT with a hammer. The more troublesome third one came free after a small 2 jawed gear puller (2 inch/ 50 mm) was used to stress the joint, then a hammer tap to the shaft of the puller. I did the spring balance preload check on the hub before fully dismantling and the first one I did was very notchy. After dismantling the hub I found that the lower swivel bearing race on one side had been pounded out by the rollers, so be prepared for replacing these. Interestingly, the straight ahead steering stability was worse after this overhaul, presumably the corrugations in the bearing race kept the wheel pointed straight. My overhaul was 'cause the the hub was leaking oil onto the inside of the brake disc. Obviously I did all the seals. The one inside the stub axle is supposed to keep the swivel housing oil in, but if it gets past this into the wheel bearings there is another seal which rides on the outside of the stub axle. The seal track on my stub axle was a little scored so I put a "speedie sleeve" on it, since this is the critical seal for keeping oil off the disc. Ask at a bearing store about "speedie sleeves" if not familiar. My final advice is that there are a lot of (often tight) bolts to remove, which have a lot of travel, so I rigged up a 1/2" square drive to round transition drive piece so that I could drive my sockets (after initial loosening/ prior to torque wrenching) with a cordless drill. There's always more I could write about, ask if you have further questions.
