LAND ROVER DRIVES ONTO THE INTERNET
April 9, 1996, 7:28 PM EDT
New Web Site Address is: http://www.LandRover.com
LANHAM, Md., April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Land Rover North America's new
home on the Internet is open to the public with an array of news,
features and product information including Quick Time Virtual Reality
(QTVR) tours and one-click exterior color changes for the vehicle
selected.
The site's Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is:
http://www.LandRover.com.
In announcing the launch of the site, Charles R. Hughes, president,
Land Rover North America, Inc., said, "Our Web site makes it easy for
users to thoroughly brief themselves on our products and, as it grows
will become a gateway to the Land Rover lifestyle as well."
A main section is devoted to the Camel Trophy Adventure with
background information and photos as well as daily updates and
additional photos from this year's trek. Now underway until April 21
in Borneo, teams from 20 nations are driving Land Rover Discoverys
through the jungles of Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The Netscape browser and a fast modem (14.4K or faster) is recommended
for best viewing at the site. Visitors will be able to download
Netscape Navigator at no charge, as well as free software to view the
QTVRs and a Land Rover screen saver. There are QTVRs for both the
Range Rover 4.0 SE and the Discovery. They permit zooming and stop
motion for detailed study of the products and are available in either
high or low resolution.
Product information on the Web site covers all the descriptions,
specifications and accessories in the printed catalogs for Range
Rover, Discovery and Defender 90. The catalogs themselves can be
ordered from the site via E-Mail.
An interactive Dealer directory responds with the name, address and
telephone number of the nearest dealer when a visitor to the site
inputs a zip code. A special section of the Dealer Directory is
devoted to Land Rover Centres, the nation's first network of
dealerships devoted exclusively to four-wheel drive vehicles and the
four-wheeling lifestyle. The Centres section provides a brief
description of this new approach to automotive retailing wherein the
dealers' sales and service staffs add value to the purchase and use of
a Land Rover vehicle. The Web site was launched April 9.
Land Rover North America, Inc., is a member of the Rover Group of
Companies, importing vehicles manufactured by Land Rover in Solihull,
England. The Rover Group is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW, AG.

Glad to see you're getting your money's worth. <GRIN> I've had mine offroad quite a bit. I usually go over the vehicle after any extensive offroad time. I clean the undercarraige and engine with a power sprayer and look over hoses, brakes, and structural/suspension components superficially. The things that are sensitive to the mud caking are the alternator and the radiator fan (more so if you have AC), so make sure and keep these clean. If you lose charge or start overheating, rinse as best you can with the cleanest water available and you should have no further problems. Other than that, it can take one helluva beating, so enjoy and just keep an eye out for the unusual. ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960411 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

From: Ernie Brooks <ewb@mickey.dt.navy.mil> Subject: Seeking Disco Info Date: Wed, 10 Apr 96 19:50:46 EDT Hi Coil-Sprung_Owners (and wannabes like myself). My wife & I are hoping to land a DISCO in the near future (end of April) and I was hoping to get some insight beyond what's available from the folks in the showroom - as well as sharing my future experiences with fellow CSO's. I was hoping to find a FAQ for this list, but haven't stumbled upon it yet. If there is one, please let me know. Also, it appeared that I should be able to grab the digest version of the list for previous months, but so far I've only been able to get old postings by day - lots more retrieval. Any truth to the monthly compilations? I've sent Major a request for "index" and "info" but haven't gotten a reply as yet. Enough general wind blowing (or key-striking), its time for a real question (Enquiring minds want to know) : What the hell is this Disco rear speaker fountain option thing all about? Is this just a worm to hook newbies with - if so, you got me. Perhaps more seriously, can anyone tell me how the Disco's full time 4WD functions? I assume there must be some sort of open differential in the transfer case to accomodate different rates of rotation front to back, but I haven't gotten a real answer from showroom or LR NAS people on this relatively straightforward question. Does anyone know if there is a reason for not including a 2WD option - seems to me that 2WD has to provide better fuel efficiency than a permanent 4WD system (even with a non-locked center differential) when conditions call for that mode (70 deg, dry, Interstate). Your comments are much appreciated. Regarding where to mount the CB itself, I put mine on the lower front of the drivers seat behind my legs -- almost invisible but handy. Gordon Kallio has a neat arrangement in his 92 RR with the CB in the center console, mounted vertically in the front of the compartment so the controls are handy and the thing doesn't take much of the available space. He used a rear bumper mounted antenna which he found very poor in performance though. Its got a few more door dings than I'd like and the back seat has some scuffs. The dealer came down to $15,000. No powertrain warranty, but It appears to be well maintained mechanically. New PS box. Sunroof and Cruise are to be fixed this afternoon. My biggest problem, and this is stupid, is that I really don't like the brown color. However, Its the best, practically the only, deal I've found in six months so I hate to pass it up just on color. Obviously fewer miles would be good too. If I thought I could find another similar Rover at a similar price I would wait. Do you all think $15,000 is a really good price? How often is a 90 RR going to pop up for under $16,000. Thanks for all your advice and support. William. ------------------------------[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960411 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I know series owners have this option, but I've not seen or heard of them for rangies or discos. From what I understand, these leather thingies are sort of conical and are fitted between the hub and the axle to keep nasties off your balls. I am concerned because my springtime cleanup (yes, even though we've had about a foot of snow the past three days) showed a nasty accumulation of salty crud around my balls! (NO! Unless free-wheeling hubs are used (and these present problems in their own right) there was only a 1 or 2% difference in fuel consumption between full time 4x4 and 4x2 with the front axle being driven by the road wheels. I believe it was reasoned that the increased safety factor of full time 4x4 was well worth the expence. This was born out when the Range Rover won an international automotive safety award ahead of the likes of Mercedes. By the way, you only run the centre diff locked under conditions where traction is being lost, to use it on a hard tractive surface like a highway is going to be a very expensive lesson..... You might want to beg/borrow/aquire a copy of "the Landrover experience" book to find out more about the function and use of the Disco's 4x4 capabilities. cheers -- Daryl Webb (dwebb@waite.adelaide.edu.au) ------------------------------[ <- Message 20 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960411 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

When I installed it I did not consider off road hazards but it is only a 1/4 wave (4" ) antenna. If I see something comming I can always remove it from the base. After my first off road trip last month I am planning to install my old CB prior to the next trip. One antenna solution is to use a two-fer to split into the radio antenna. Friends have done this but range is not great but would work from one end of a group of LRs to the other. Through the glass cell phone look-a-like antennas are also available for CBs. The solution I think I will go with is a (rain) gutter clamp antenna. Radio Shack still carries these for the few of us still with rain gutters. Their antenna allows it to be folded over while still clamped on. BTW the aluminum roof works fine as a ground plane for my roof mount antenna. Let me know what you end up doing.
