Subject: Re: Summer Rally Info
I too am interested in the Solihull Society's summer rally. I talked to Greg
about a month ago, and the most I could find out was that it was held in Crested
Butte from aug 8-12. The club has meetings on the second Tuesday of every other
month. There should have been one on Tuesday(April 9th). I would expect that
some details may have been worked out at that meeting. The next meeting is in
June, so hopefully we won't have to wait until then for information.
T.F.Mills(tomills@du.edu) is the Solihull Society's newsletter editor, and a
member of the main list. I assume that he will post details as they become
available, either to the list, or to their web site which he also maintains.
There are several people that I know planning on making it to the rally, so
hopefully as soon as anyone gets information it will be posted to the list.

I replaced the springs because my vehicle was leaning, the shocks came with the
package along with a new steering stabilizer. I am glad that I got the shocks
because when I got the old ones off, two of them were bad. I still have a small
amount of lean, but I think this is due to worn bushings, which I should get to
this summer. These are the spec uncompressed measurements for the springs on a

LR: 16.47in (418.36mm) Pink and Purple Stripe
RR: 17.134in (435.2mm) Green and Pink Stripe
The stripes are vertically painted on the springs. I don't know at percentage of
the above measurements would require replacement of the springs, but you can at
least get an idea of what condition your springs are in.
Someone else installed OME Springs and took measurements of the before and after
distance between the axle and axle stop and posted them. My "After" measurements
were less than his, but I felt that there had been some settling in the months
after installation. I would be curious to see if he has had the same settling. I
will try to find the old message if he doesn't notice this post.

Range Rovers have legendary no-compromise offroad capability, highly reliable basic drive train components, a fairly ingenious AWD system, and aluminum body panels that won't rust. Oh, and also a unique British style. These reasons are why I, and I think many rro's on the list, drive them. However, just about everything else on the Range Rover, including engine ancillaries, electronics, interior, etc., is of only average quality. Note that I did not say below average quality. Based on my own limited experience and what I've read, I'd say RR stuff breaks about as often as other manufacturer's stuff. However, you will definitely find that it costs a lot more to replace the same broken part on a RR, because the parts are imported and relatively rare. -Matt '88 RR ------------------------------[ <- Message 14 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960412 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I have a set here, which I intend to use. Installing is, apparently, a bit of a miserable job, partly because of the location, and partly because they were designed to fit a number of vehicles. Before I greased them for installation, I made a full-size pattern from them. This pattern is, I think, 24" by 36". It includes instructions (but it is possible that the instructions are not complete.) The problem is how to copy this pattern at reasonable cost. It is on paper. To make your own, you need: - the pattern - some leather - a hole punch - two boot laces (yes, that's what came with the kit!) - two large hose clamps I made the pattern for the benefit of others. I believe that older RRs (e.g. '79) have smaller hubs, so fitting may be a challenge. ...chris Montreal, Canada ------------------------------[ <- Message 15 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960412 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Dear Andrew: If yours is a '94 (Tickford) top, there should be metal battens that slide into pockets in the cloth behind the door and serve to stiffen the fabric for a better seal. I don't know how the '95 BestTop setup works. By the way, here in mild but drizzly Seattle, this is the time of year that we *remove* the soft top and put on the Surrey top (or Bimini), or if you're younger than 40, go topless. I've taken the "Surrey" option. Since it was 42 F this morning, I did put on a light down jacket. Very exhilarating! And it looks like rain for the commute home. I'll wade in with this snippet of info for your folks LR UK disco

to a hidden winch behind the bumper set up on the TDI.
Its a Superwinch Husky 8500 which looks suspiciously like the Camel

Superwinch in the US neither knew or cared about this set up when I emailed
them. So I see two options, fabricating a mount, or importing the Uk spec
mount. BUT there is a pipe behind the bumper on my car that might be the a/c ort
or something, that would need moving. Hmm, its never as easy as it seems at

When it is warm out, I just pull at the bottem of the canvas and try to get the vertical rubber strip as far forward as possible, without the bottom getting in the way of closing the door. I can't do this when it is cold, too stiff. It seems to work its way back in driving, bumping and vibrating. So I pull it forward again. By the way, I have the new Besstop, like the 1995 models. More of a problem for me is the horizontal edge, my passenger side is just a little bent, maybe from storage in my garage in LA, (never used it much there...), and it doesn't like to seal real good on top. Oh well, it's not my lap!! :>) John, D90, Wisconsin Doortops off today...it was 70F Doortops back on today...it's gonna rain and be 40F again ------------------------------[ <- Message 24 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960412 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Classic Rangie needs a left tail lamp guard
Some total lowlife stole the left (driver's side) tail lamp guard from my
1990 Range Rover. Grrr. Only the left one. You wouldn't think a fellow
RRO would be capable of such an atrocious act.
My dealer says I can only buy them in pairs, though he did give me the best
deal he could.
Does anybody have an unused left lamp guard I could buy? If anybody out
there is missing a right lamp guard, then maybe we could split the cost. I
also welcome any suggestions as to where to look for one. Are there any
Rover-friendly junkyards in the Bay Area?
Finally, is there any good way I can attach these so that they take more
than a phillips screwdriver to steal?
Thank you very much.

The Disco Makes a fair amount of wind noise at highway speeds, the
tire are not as loud as that but add up to about half as much more.
The tires seem loudest at about 45 mph and its just an interesting
hum ( turn up the radio, that'll fix it )
If you are looking for "no Noise" this won't work, If you don't mind
some noise this will work. If you want alot of noise get a series rig
or a d90 :)
The grip on road seems real good, on hard stopping you can hear/feel the
tire working but I don't think it make a big difference.
I will mention these tires are bigger so your speedometer will make
it apear your going slower ( keeps the wife happy :) she thinks I'm
being civil ( GRIN )
Actually I do drive slower with these tires. They do not seem as
stable above 75 mph ( whatever that is in real MPH ? ) The taller
sidewall probably affects it.
On a side note I mounted the stock tires on other wheels with the
thought that after the mud season was over ( one day in california :)
I would use the road tires and switch for outings... As of yet I
haven't switched and probably will not.
I plan on buying two more tires and wheels ( trac edges ) for having
spares ( if I am out four wheeling its not a bad Idea, one on tire
rack in back one in roof rack up top )

I'm used to being ignored by Range Rovers and Discoveries but today I drove past a handsome red D90 soft top in Natick, MA and got nary a nod. I can't see how the driver could have missed my flaming yellow beast at 25 MPH. I guess non-urbanites are more waveful. SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE......Congrats on considering the Land Rover. As far as dealers are concerned, take the extra time and effort to find one that actually has some brain function and knows what the words 'customer service' mean. The response to your straightforward question is indicative of a greater problem with many LR dealers. There are some good ones out there (some even on the list) but there are also some major (insert explitive here) that give the marque a bad name. I don't know about you but I don't want to beg people to take my money. Good luck!
