Subject: RE: Hidden winch mounts
Mark,
I mounted the winch this weekend and have over an inch of clearance
between the winch and the oil line. The bottom of the mounting plate ended
up about an inch higher than the bottom of the air dam ( which I had lready
removed. I am giving up some clearance - I suppose you could design the
mount so that the winch was really tight against the bottom of the radiator
assembly thereby requiring removal of tha oil line, but I am happy with the
way it turned out.
I bought the winch via mail from 4 Wheel Part Wholesalers
$42.14 for shipping (Califonia to Wisconsin). I told them I heard they were
selling them for $565 (via an earlier post) and they responded that the best
they could do was $628 w/ shipping. After some haggling they went to
$608.09 including shipping.
I had a welder make the mount. I'll fax you the plans if you like.
The one defect in my plan is that the winch could sit about an inch further
aft. The clutch on the winch comes in an upright position. It can be
rotated so that it is on the front of the winch. However, when I did this,
it would not clear the front bumper. As I result, I have it in the upright
or top position but I have to reach under the truck and in from behind the
winch to get my hand on it:(

Subject: Front seat electrical disaster
This is an odd one. I'll be shelling out bucks to the dealer later on this
week if nobody can help me because this is a literal pain in the butt.
Over the weekend, the driver's side seat in my 1990 Range Rover County
suddenly started refusing to move backward. It still reclines OK, still
moves up and down OK, and still moves forward. It just won't go rearward.
There's no motor struggling noise and it still moves forward, so I guess it
would have to be the switch, relay, or wiring.
OK, no problem, I'll just take the seat out out and fix it. Unfortunately,
the shop manual says to move the seat forward to remove the four rear bolts
holding the seat track down, then move the seat rearward to remove the two
front bolts. But it won't move rearward--that's why I'm trying to remove
it!
Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can remove this inoperative
seat? I tried to the control box, but the wires aren't long enough with
seat still installed. I also thought about taking the track motors off
(impossible on the right-side of the seat--the transmission tunnel is in
the way), and about which part under there would be the cheapest to destroy
should it come to that.

Scott: Never, ever, give in to the evil of Lucas!! *laugh* Hmm....My guess would be the switch....Lots of people have had problems with RR seat controls........Actually I think that they are Mercedes controls, so I guess that we can't blame lucas.... I know that somewhere out there, there is a wiring diagram for all of the switch contacts......Someone should have it.... In the meantime........what about this.......hmmmm.....get some jumper wires and use direct connections...move the daamn ting out of the way.....then get a DMM, find the problem, and fix-ola....I suspect the control box.....that would be my guess.....sounds familiar..... Subject: Re: Front seat electrical disaster
Scott,
stop trying to take out the seat! The problem is probably just the
switch located on the side of the seat. Try the following.
1. Remove the 2 plastic pieces that represent the seat bottom and seat
back, prise off the cover and spray electrical contact cleaner through
the holes moving the stalks that are protruding backwards and
forwards. This usually works and you are back in business.
2. You can take out the switch and carefully pull it apart and clean
all the contacts and reassemble it. Fiddly, but doable.
3. Replace the switch a new one from the dealer is probably about
$100. You can get them cheaper from a Mercedes dealer but I don't know
the part number to ask for.
Regards
Mike
