Does anyone have any comments on the Safari Gard front bumper with winch
mount? I am thinking of getting one for my Discovery. I have also been
looking at the ARB and TJM products. If anyone has compared offerrings from
the three and would like to offer comment, thanks! [Yes, I am aware of the
air bag issue.]

I had mine (5-speed) indicating 120 (MPH) the other day.....

Yeah - the speedo is off but I was pretty surprised that you could push
something with that kind of Cd that fast (that quickly...). It was
still accelerating when I figured I'd had enough. It really didn't
feel all that bad but I'm leaving the high speed runs to my ALFA 164
now. BTW, it turns the same revs in 5th as the ALFA does.

A while back I pointed out a 4.7% error in readout. The dealer had said that was within
LRNA acceptabl;e parameters. I protested and to their credit Landrover Scottsdale
ordered a new Speedo for my D90. Yesterday after a 120 mile drive to Scottsdale they
installed a spanking new speedo. Guess what, a 4.7% error.

I think that the metrification of the UK has lead to a diminished memory of what an
authentic English Mile really is!

Bravo to the dealer, serious doubts about the speedo manufacturer.

I'm going to Florida in October/November this year, probably to spend
a week in St.Pete's with my parents and a week in the Keys. So, does
anyone know where I can rent a Disco/RR without bankrupting myself. I
don't intend to do any off-roading (shame!) but since I have a RR at
home, it seems a shame to settle for less on vacation!

Regards,

Hugh.

Subject: Temperature sensors.

Hello, all,

Following the suggestion that the poor cold running on my '89 RR 3.5 auto
might be a bad temperature sensor, I had a look under the bonnet and I
find that it has *3* temperature sensors. Two are in the left hand cylinder
head next to the thermostat housing and the other is between the 'V' of
the cylinders. The latter one is, according to the spare parts fiche, the
overtemperature sensor for the air con, so we can eliminate that one.

The other two, the fiche says that one is a "temperature sensor" and the
other is a "temperature sensor/timer". So, which one is it? The plain sensor
is GBP 9, the timer is GBP 45!!! (Multiply by 1.5 for dollars).

Alternatively, does anyone know what measurements I can make on these to
determine which, if any, is faulty? Are they thermistors? Does the RR
Workshop Manual describe their principles of operation? (It could be cheaper
to buy a manual than putting the car into the shop - again!).

Regards,

Hugh.

i too am in need of a roof rack for my 90rr. the problem is i want the
best of both worlds. i want the capacity, flexibility, and durability of
the 'basket' style roof racks (the ones in the RN catalog, brownchurch
seems like the right kind of name, but i don't have the catalog here) and
i want the convenient method of carrying bicycles and kayaks that a Thule
or Yakima rack provides.

my thoughts are either mount thule or yakima cross bars on top of the
'basket' rook rack or try to sqeeze both a half (or quarter) length
'basket' roof rack and a thule or yakima rack on the roof.

has anyone persued either of these options or tackled this problem
before?

what experience do people have with the 'basket' style racks? I can think
of three makes. the one marketed by rover, and the two in the RN catalog.

thanks,
steve

Subject: Disco body panels

All,

I was flipping through some mags this past weekend and while reading
a blurb about the Plymouth Prowler I discovered that the same US company that
makes the all aluminum body for the Prowler also supplies some of the body
panels for the Disco! The company is Mayflower Vehicle Systems in Norwalk,
Ohio. I wonder if they make any other LR body panels? Might be worth a
little research if they let people buy direct.

Just a quick FYI :-)

Speedo accuracy

I don't know the regulations in the States, but here in Norway, and =
probably rest of Europe, they don't care about what the speedo is =
showing, as long as it does not show too low a speed! (Generally =
speaking, and I have the regulation which refers to EC directives in =
front of me).

So what is the implication? - if vehicle manufacturers tried to install =
an "accurate" speedo, I would not be surprised if 50% of those shoved =
too low readings, due to the inevitable individual variations of the =
instruments, and thus where illegal. That is a risk the manufacturer =
can't take. Consequently, from all the test I have seen, I will guess =
99.9% of all cars have speedo that reads too high! And that goes for any =
car, luxury (Mercedes, Lexus, RR) or a Lada. I would think a reading =
that is 5% off in this respect is very acceptable. My own RR is about 4% =
off (too high).

The difference between a new and a completely worn out set of tires =
could (I'm guessing) introduce a 1% error.

It would of course be nice to have an accurate instrument, perhaps we =
have to wait for onboard radars, ultrasonic devices, GPS, or lasers =
(hmm! imagine Series with those!).

I've never seen or heard of anyone else who does this, but I've been very
happy with my Thule "Weekender," a box that fits on the Thule rack. Mine's
been on top of the Range Rover for about two years now, and I use it to keep
spare parts and fluids, maps, blankets, tools, and all the other stuff you'd
like to keep in the Rangey but don't want to have taking up space in the
cargo area. The box locks, as does the rack.

On offroad trips, I also keep a low-profile plastic 5-gallon container of
gas up there, no need to worry about fumes or spillage, and no need to worry
about rear/front end collision.

I did! I did a custom fab. from the D110 type basket. I didn't like the
full length, so I shortened my design to about 3/4" length. I made it out
of 3/4" tubing with 6" tall side rails.

I too want to carry kayak's and bikes as well as camping gear, coolers etc.,
but I don't want to have the "accessory" racks on my basket all the time.
What I did was welded four unistrut tubing pieces to the inside rail of the
basket to act as a receiver. I then welded the male unistrut to two pieces
of 4' x 7/8" tubing. The 7/8" tubing is the same diameter as the Yakama
rack tubing and will receive Yakama bike, ski, kayak stackers et. al.. To
facilitate both camping gear and kayaks/bikes etc., I made the unistrut
approx. 7" long and punched 1/4" holes @ 1" increments along its length.
This allows for an adjustable height of 1" to 6" from the top of the basket
rail to the bottom of the "accessory" rack.

Of course this concept will apply to most safari type baskets including the
Brownchurch baskets.

Steve -- You could look into combining some other type of roof rack with
Yakima or Thule attachments -- just a thought, don't know if they would
fit. For example I have the expedition rack that was sold as the official
RR accessory, and I've now seen it at Rovers North or Atlantic British --
very solid mountings, steel construction, basket at rear and cross bars
at front to allow for ski mounting etc. But you'd have to see if the
various clip-on accessories from Yule etc would fit on its rails --
probably but I'm not sure.

On the other hand maybe that is overkill and the standard Yule or Thakima
rackima would really satisfy all your needs -- as they probably would
mine. The heaviest things I tend to put up there are sheets of plywood,
sheetrock etc for remodelling projects!

Subject: Tow Hooks

It's always struck me that no provision is made on our fair vehicles for
good sturdy recovery hooks on the front. No doubt this is based on the
assumption that we'll never get stuck, but we secretly know better.

Does anyone know of a solution (other than the $50 recovery loops
available from RN)? Even the $50 jobs are incompatible with most winch
mounts etc, and the vehicle handbook specifically forbids us from using
the factory towing loop for vehicle recovery.

Just wondering
