Hi John,

Yea, sorry. I emptied my e-mail trash accidentally and lost about 1/2 dozen
messages I was intending to reply to, yours included. %^(

Ya say you knew a guy in LA with a "lemon" D90? What, aside from the oil
leaks, was the problem(s)? I have had many "issues" with my 90 including
but not limited to: Rear diff (replaced twice), front diff (replaced once),
T-case (replaced), front and rear prop. shafts (will soon be replaced),
ignition switch (replaced), front wheel oil seals (replaced), clutch plate
(replaced), the front right break caliper bolts came loose and the caliper
jammed between the wheel rim and the rotor (limped home and all replaced),
exhaust manifold bolts came loose (fixed), turn signal relay (replaced) and
finally a oil pan "seepage" that drips on my driveway (gonna get it fixed
soon. I hope it's not the rear main seal!)

Fortunately, all of the above was replaced under warranty, but I'm still a
little worried about what's gonna happen after it expires (the warranty).
If all/any of the above continues to go bad, I'll have no choice but to sell
the vehicle. No way would I have the cash to keep the girl running. I
still love the vehicle, and now that it has a completely new drive train,
I'm confident she's on the right path to longevity (please, please, please).

As far as the stiff clutch is concerned I've had no problems (I'll check to
see if I have a cat. shield). During the summer the trans tunnel will get
almost too hot to touch during low speed crawling, and I would assume that
the slave cylinder is very hot also. My recommendation, get the dealer to
replace it. The '94 clutch is very stiff already and to compound the
stiffness would, aside from getting your left leg in good shape, be a royal
pain in the ***.

Are you noticing very little RRO mail lately? I know the LRO server is
down, but I'm gettin only 2 or 3 messages from RRO. Is it the server or is
it just that there's nothing to chat about?

I've never seen or heard of anyone else who does this, but I've been very
happy with my Thule "Weekender," a box that fits on the Thule rack. Mine's
been on top of the Range Rover for about two years now, and I use it to keep
spare parts and fluids, maps, blankets, tools, and all the other stuff you'd
like to keep in the Rangey but don't want to have taking up space in the
cargo area. The box locks, as does the rack.

On offroad trips, I also keep a low-profile plastic 5-gallon container of
gas up there, no need to worry about fumes or spillage, and no need to worry
about rear/front end collision.

I have both Thule and Yakima, and I prefer Thule. A square pipe makes more
sense for holding things horizontally, Thule's device that attaches the
pylons to the rain gutter is (IMO) better and easier to use, Thule's means
of attaching the pipe to the pylon is way better (no wrench required), and
Thule's locks work better. I switched to Thule after one of my locked
Yakima racks was stolen.

Doug,
You have had all of that stuff replaced? WOW! I haven't had any of those
problems with my 95, knock on aluminum. I can understand a diff problem but
both diff's and both props and the xfer? What were the problems you were
experiencing?

Also wanted to ask you about airing down tires;

Rovers North told me that they do not air down because of increased
possibility of tire and rim damage. However, on the trail ride I went on
last Saturday with a rating of 5-7, all of the J**P and TOY**A guy's aired
down to about 15PSI. I aired down a little to 22PSI.

Do you air down at all, and if so how much? What are the pluses and minuses
to airing down your tires?

Anyone else out there have any comments?
Thanks
Barnett

I've had similar experiences and I got to thinking...

Airing down, tries to place more tire in contact with the terrain and
allows more sidewall to contact the ground and/or conform to the uneven
terrain for better grip. The additional benefit, if any, of this depends
on the tires (tread pattern, and bias/radial construction) and the
terrain. It does soften the ride if you (well your truck, anyway) are
stiffly sprung.

Jeeps weigh 3-4,000 lbs. With big tires, i.e. larger than stock, there
is alot of surplus load capacity so they can be aired-down without much
fear of tire damage resulting from overloading. OTOH, my big fat
Discovery starts at 4500 pounds and probably weighs in at closer to
5,000 or 5,500 once loaded with people and gear. Since I'm running stock
tires (for now), I don't have that much surplus load capacity in the
tires. Consequently, I don't like to go much below 20psi if I don't have
to. (I usually humor the Jeepers and let a little out just to be
social). It's always easy enough to let air out later if necessary but
without a serious air compressor, it's a pain to try to put it back in
on the trail.

Personally, I haven't seen a tremendous advantage to airing down the
stock Michilens that come with the Discovery since I've gotten stuck
with them aired down and had no problem with them at "road" pressure
(see the 1st paragraph). I have dinged the rim already (though I don't
know if it happened when I was "aired down" or not) so I'll probably be
skipping that step for a while to see what happens.

As always, YMMV!

First question:

Does anyone know the model or part # of the wiper blades for the D90
('95)? My driver side wiper's rubber is slowly ripping away from the
metal blade, and it's getting hard(er) to see on these snowy (yes,
it's still snows in MN in April - joy!!) and rainy days.

Second,
I don't seem to be getting posts regularly like I used to. I'm not
sure if something happened, or if traffic has just come to an almost
abrupt halt (I get between 3-6 list emails a day lately, & i'm pretty
sure there's more traffic than that).

Thirdly, since it is getting warm out, I'm wondering how to take off
the door tops. It doesn't explain how in the owner's manual I
received, and the dealer never told me. I got a little rachet set in
my cubby when I bought it (included a the rachet and a 15mm socket, I
think). I've tried to find someplace to use it, but the only thing
that looks like a place to disconnect the doortops are the four
silver screws in the window "rail" (where the windows slide back &
forth) that appear to go down into the door. However, these seem
rather small and I would be kind of suprised if these were the only
things holding the door tops on.

Oh yeah, passed a red D90 coming the otherway on the highway waving
like a madman, flicking my lights, and not even a glance in my
direction.

Sounds like they virtually rebuilt your car!!!!
I find it difficult to believe that all the parts that were
replaced could all be defective, that would be too much of a coincidence.

Hate to say this but are you sure your dealer actually knows what
it is doing?

Barnett,

Yea, depressing isn't it? Not really though.

The first rear diff. was my fault (don't tell anyone !^). I got inta one of
those situse' and discovered what a bucking V8 can do to diff spider gears.
Stupid me. Too much throttle. Sheared the carrier pin and everything, but
the amazing thing was it kept driving for over a week on a 80 mile commute!

The second diff. was a factory dud. Made a hissing sound like a bad carrier
bearing or somthin. I didn't care. Just wanted it fixed.

The T-case most likely did not need replacement, but hey, if ya saw the
first rear diff., you would want it replaced too!

The front diff., well as long as your replacing the T-case AND the rear
diff...Well...er. uh.

The clutch didn't really need replacing either. It was a mechanic "try" to
eliminate a stiff shifting trany. Didn't help the shifting, but hey, got a
new clutch at 12,000 miles. What did end up helping was new linkage, or was
it because I had 16k on the odometer, and the trans finally worked itself
in? Anyway, shifts like a dream at 23K with 1/2 synthetic in it.

The prop shafts is a real issue. When I back off the accelerator, right in
between engine compression and acceleration. I get a nasty vibration/noise
com ming from "somewhere in the middle" of the vehicle. The sound is akin
to some of the warning shoulder imprints on some highways.
VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. It's either the T-case AGAIN, or most likely, a bad
u-joint, or impute shaft. I'll post when it's diagnosed/fixed.

The ignition switch did quit. The wife ran an errand and when she tried to
start the vehicle, no go. It would turn over and fire, but when the key was
released from the on position it would die. I've heard this is somewhat
common in Rover products (Lucas Demons or somthin).
It was, knock on aluminum, the only time I've needed the LR road side
assistance. I could have hot wired it, but didn't want to fry the coil.
(sorry about the "knock on aluminum" plagiarism Barnett. It just fit there
so well! :*).

As far as airing down your tires, give it a try. You have air lockers, so I
assume you got the attachments to your compressor to air your tires back up.
I dropped mine down to 15 psi, and realized much greater traction. There is
a "danger" of loosing a bead, but I think the advantages in traction AND
travel are worth it. Bias ply tires, such as Mickie T's, will mash out to a
much greater size footprint, thus allowing better surface contact (duh).
Radial ply on the other hand are designed for better sidewall stiffness, and
as a result don't "mash" quite as good. BUT, when rockin' it, the lower
pressure does allow the radial tire to conform to the rock, and, once again,
aids in traction/travel. Some J**Pers in my area run with bead locks at
about 5 psi when rock crawlin'.

As far as rim damaged, well our fancy pants alloy rims are susceptible to
dings, though I've never had problems, barring a couple of dings on the face
of one rim (not as a result of low tire pressure). Of course steel rims are
less susceptible to cosmetic damage but will tweak on a good hit, alloy,
I've heard, is less susceptible to major "tweaks".

Sorry about the length of this post, but with the lack of RRO chatting goin
on, I had nothing better to do. Work? O'yea! Ok boss right away! :^).

Yea! I was wondering the same thing, but personally, I think that we need a
great controversial thread to get things goin again! Somthing like "I'm
gonna install 44" supperswampers on my D90. What do I need to make-um fit?"
Or, somthin like "I don't like fuel injection on the 3.9. Anyone know of a
Webber 6 pack bolt on?" :^)

STOP! Don't pull the track screws. On the under side of the window on the
plastic door panel there is two holes. If ya feel/look inside you will see
the two bolts which secure the tops. I can't remember the size, but they
are significantly larger than 15mm. You will need a 6" extension to get to
the nuts. Be careful, there is washers that will drop between the door
panel and the door, so be ready to catch um (I had to pull the door panel to
recover one).

Remember, when you re-install do not over tighten. If you do then the
window won't slide very easily.

I recently passed a NAS 110, flashed my lights, waved, then honked. He
looked at me like his car was on fire, then realizing nothing was wrong,
nodded. O'well...

Subject: 95 Disco crankshaft timing gear recall: more

I just got back from my dealer yesterday where this recall
replacement was completed. Apparently most Disco owners should not
worry as the dealer saids only a very few cars(5? 10?) most of which
went to this dealer in Indianapolis, were affected. I also got an ABS
warning sensor chip in the ECU replaced and now my ABS warning light
is not on all the time.
There were many Discos(7) and RR 4.0 SEs on this lot plus 5-6
92 and up County LWB and Hunters in good average condition so if any

You're a dirty no good low down... Maybe this will get the list
motivated. Everybody, take sides and come out SCREAMING.
(definitely not enough controversy, so no traffic :>)

By the way Doug, not bad timing (I think there is a time warp going
on). You sent the message at 2:59pm and I received it at 2:57pm. I
know my time is correct because I own timeservices on Intel's
network. We use those fun satellites to determine our time. So
either we know the exact time down to milliseconds and don't have
an accurate LONG/LAT or we know exactly where we are to the
LONG/LAT degree/minute/second.hundreth second and our time is way
off.

What do ya think?????

Isn't technology wonderful.

I've experienced the same and have wondered the same.

You know this really won't cut it. Remember, the issue for some is
not coil vs. leaf but the amount of cushioning in the seats, the
ability to foil-broil on the manifold while on the move, the
auto-latte maker, the spray-and-drive wash and wear capability, and
the no-wax exterior. Actually, I have it on good authority, the
coil vs. leaf issue has nothing to do with the frame suspension,
but rather refers to the seat suspension: leaf sprung seat
cushions, versus coil sprung seat cushions!!!

So, in conclusion, you can see how you have it all wrong now I
hope.

The stock nuts are 15mm, the washers are attached to the nuts. Watch out
for the plastic liners in the doors, they tend to try and escape when
you aren't looking. Also take care with the rubber seal, mine always sticks
to the door and I have to work on it to free it.

Oh, thats why that happens. OOPS!

Say John:

How do we all tell if our Discos are one of the unlucky few? We all know
that the Rover V8 is indestructible...but someone once told me that those
timing gear thingies were important....or something!
