One of our club members in SOLAROS is manufacturing heavy-duty padded cases for the doortops on series vehicles and D90's. The case is heavy nylon with strap-down point across the back, big zippers, a pocket for tools & fittings, and thick foam padding (unlike the Land Rover version). These things are very nice and allow you to take the tops off and carry them with you greenlaning without worry of breaking your doortops. He is looking for between $120 and $140 for them, depending on how many people are interested in them. If you take one of the PVC pipe slices that fit into your doortop holes and place it on top of a stuck one and tap with the heel of your hand, it should push the stuck piece through and allow you to still remove the piece you push with. I use a ratchet handle and 5/8" deepwell also. LRNA cut one of my holes off-center, so it gets interesting on one of the holes. The deep well socket also makes it easy to spin off the nut without losing a finger in the door. BTW, I also have flanged nuts on my doortops, not separate washers. ------------------------------[ <- Message 4 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960422 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Waterproofing the RR, Disco Recall
About the Disco recall on the timing gear-my wife's 1995 Disco was not
included in the vehicles needing attention. Apparently it has to do with
improper hardering of the piece and possible early failure.
The most important thing is learning what you fellow RR owners did
to waterproof you RRs, especially the bolt in the spare tire carrier well
and the front mudflap mounting holes. I used stainless fittings with
rubber washers under steel washers and the water is still getting in! :-(
Has anyone found a source for inexpensive RR door seals, a little while
ago, AB want about $110/each for the fronts...mine are cracked and not
helping the water situation!
Hmmmm....more traffic on the list? How about suggestions for
possible color changes to my '87 Caspian Blue RR. I could stick with stock
blue color, or go for something a little more daring! How about Camel
Trophy yellow!? Let me hear your suggestions(the interior is gray)! Any
recommendations about having the RR re-sprayed? What kind of shop should I
stay away from(I want a nice job, but don't want to break the bank). The
clearcoat is starting to chip off the doors and the paint over the previous
owners fill in the rear doors is flaking off as well!
Thanks for your Help!

Subject: Not so hidden winch
There have been a few post recently regarding hidden winch mounts.
After attaching my winch, I was a bit dismayed when it appeared to me that
it could have been an inch higher as there was more room between the winch
and the bottom of the radiator assembly. Similarly, it seemed to me that it
could have been an inch or so further aft. These two inches are
contributing to some loss in front angle of attack (although the assembly is
still a couple inches higher than the factory air dam which I removed). The
net result is that I can see about two inches of the spool peeking out from
between the bumper and the base of the mount. This, of course, contradicts
the notion of the "hidden" or "discreet" winch mount.
Well, no more dismay. On Sat. I stretched the cable and discovered
that actually being able to see the spool is muy importante. I was
surprised at how easily the cable can pile up or spread out leaving gaps on
the spool. I found out that getting the cable to "behave" takes a bit of
work. Frankly, if the winch was out of sight I think it would be a big
problem. An added bonus of the forward placement of the wich is that the
base of the mount (which is flush with the base of the roller fairlead,
provides a nice jacking point for the hi-lift. I 'd like to claim that it
was foresight, but it was dumb luck.
Because my winch is visible, and the truck will be parked for long
intervals at deserted boat ramps and public hunting grounds, visted
occasionally by guys in j**ps with lots of tools, I'm trying to think of a
way to secure the mount. Even if the bolts attaching the winch were
loosened, the winch could not come off because there isn't room to squeeze
it off the mount. Therefore, the bolts of concern are really those
attaching the mount to the chassis - the four bumper assembly bolts. Any ideas?
No longer winchless in Wisconsin, hmmmmm, I wonder what accessory is next
and if my marriage will survive it?

John.....Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to here that your topless to. I drove around all weekend topless what
a great feeling after such a long hard winter! I put the bimini top on late
yesterday. That's how she will stay until it gets so cold that I can't
stand it this fall. In the mornings for the 6AM commute to work on MASS
pike I just blast the heat. In the afternoons for the ride home the bimini
comes off.

I here you. I have a garage at home and there used to be a garage here at
work I could park in also. Driving in the rain you really don't get to wet
as long as you keep moving. Now they have blocked of the garage at work. I
don't have a surrey top or the half toneau yet so I guess if there is rain
in the forcast I'd better start popping the doortops back on and parking
the Defender with the nose up a hill so the water can run out of the
back!!:>))
P.S. Are you going to make it to Downeast this year?
Cheers,

It means you need an angle grinder to get it off though. If the winch robbers are well equipped enough to have one of these with them, then I doubt that there is much you could do about it anyway. Tell me where you trashed your diff & I won't go there. Jemez? Sangres? Pecos? A different thing happened to me: my converters started rattling to beat the band. Lucky for me I had pointed out the dents in them to the dealer (same as yours?) right after I took delivery: they replaced them with hardly a squeak. They should have anyway, they did it. It seems that Rover is pretty lenient w/warranty and ol' (you know the name) doesn't miss a beat. He looks for things that he knows will go wrong and either fixes them or points them out so I can camplain at some future date. Or fixes them when they ain't broke, just in case. Good for him. Good for me, too. Although I almost always do my own work on vehicles, it's mas mejor when someone else will do it for free. Now, in defense of non-flashers/non-wavers: it might not be their (conscious) fault! I drive an Alfa half the time. Until I got the Rover, I waved madly at all the other Alfa owners in town. They almost always waved back. Then, one day, I was flashing and waving, grinning and jumping up and down and the other Alfa owners looked at me and did nothing -maybe they were on their cell phones, calling the loony-bin. Well, I would have been, too, if someone in a Rover was acting like that. Now I've really got check where my head (and rear) is 'cause I'm sure I waved at you while I was driving my Alfa and YOU were reaching for the phone. So, please chalk it up to being dazed and confused (apologies to Robert Plante). Check your mirrors and I'm sure you'll see me waving - late- but waving. My D90 has the same setup as you describe, except in my case, the flanged nuts on one side take a 5/8 socket and the ones on the other take a metric size, ~15mm I think. A real pain, gotta love it. Currently, I use deep sockets to remove them without too much trouble. Putting them back is more of a pain because of the plastic sleeves. To make removal easier I went in search of some coupler nuts that would fit the doortop studs and extend just past the bottoms of the holes in the door trim. This would allow removal/instalation using an open end wrench. I went to a HDW store, flanged nut in hand, found a bolt that fit the fl-nut and then four couplers that fit the bolt. The couplers were perfect in length, they would stick out past the door trim 1/4". Only problem was, they would not fit onto the doortop studs when I got home. Rats. I guess the treads on the doortop studs are metric. Finding metric coupler nuts is going to be a bit tougher, but I haven't given up yet. My backup plan is to make my own by welding short metal tubes to the nuts and then welding some nuts to the other ends of the tubes. I'm also going to try and glue the plastic sleeves to the studs starting with something like RTV silicone so if I ever have to I can get them off again.
