Subject: FOR SALE: Defender Bulkhead

Hello,

I have recently aquired a Defender bulkhead as a partial settlement against
a company in the US that provides custom built Land Rovers. The company
never delivered my vehicle, and I am attempting to recover my losses
through parts. This company is no longer in business, so no one has to
worry about being taken by them in the future.

To cut to the chase...

FOR SALE:

Defender bulkhead, new, primer black. Located in Maine, USA.

Price: Negotiable. Trades encouraged. In particular, I am looking for a
6 cyl bulkhead for a 109, heated glass, or any other tidbits of value.

email or call: 503 760 4798

Thanks, and sorry for the cross post to those who are on both lists.

Just got my OME kit form Rovers North. I'll probobly install it tomorrow and
I'll post to the group my experieces. I am going to use some directions from an
older issue of 4-wheel drive mag. where they installed one on a 90. With their
techniques you don't have to use spring compressors.

Subject: Brief Question

I am still shopping and studying LR vehicles. No urgent need yet :-)
Question: The LR official homepage lists fuel required as being
unleaded Premium for US-spec vehicles.
Since Premium is more expensive and less-available, I'm puzzled about what's
supposed to be done outside the US. Will a gasoline Disco run on unleaded
Regular but at retarded timing? Is there a knock sensor to adjust?
A jumper to adjust timing?
What's the scoop?

I have started to see rust on the welded seam of the tailgate of my 5 month-old
'95 RR. This vehicle has no accidents. Is this normal? Any experience with
LRNA's response to the start of rust? I really don't want to wait 2 years for
the tailgate to fall off to get this "bug" resolved. Is sanding and spraying
with Rustoleum the standard response?

I measured about three Range Rovers before I stuck mine on (I bought it from

It is probably the oil sending unit near the oil filter, it takes about 5 min
to install and believe it or not it only cost $6 at the dealer. The sensor
looks a lot like the ones on BMW's that seem to leak every 50,000 miles.

Transcript:

Almost no other vehicle manufacturer relies on its image as much as
Land Rover to move the metal. Unfortunately Lode Lane has fallen foul
of the advertising watchdog the Advertising Standards Authority, for
claims that three out of four of the vehicles it has built are still
on the road. (I think he meant three out of four *ever* built, UM).
It appears that Land Rover was being economical with the truth by
counting reconditioned, exported, and untaxed vehicles, and not just those
working. In fact all those vehicles kept in circulation by Land Rover Owner
readers.

Apart from exposing this massaging of the figures, this judgement also
reveals how Land Rover uses the army of Solihull enthusiasts to maintain its
legendary image. Put bluntly, Land Rover is selling Discoverys and Range
Rovers thanks to the owners who restore and run older vehicles and the
suppliers who make that possible.

Ask the buyers of new Land Rovers the reasons they bought one and many will
reply that among them was the fact that Land Rover makes the world's
toughest vehicles. Just look at the thousands that are still on the road,
they'll say. Again, it is the enthusiasts that are behind this perception.
There's nothing wrong with Land Rover exploiting its past, but there's a big
danger in the way the company is developing. It's moving away from being
primarily the builder of utility machines, towards creating expensive
vehicles that are never used off-road, and could lose touch with its
roots and destroy that vital image. If fashions change, Land Rover could be
exposed as the off road king that has no clothes. No ad agency would be able
to put that right.

Ron,

I've tried all three grades of gas in my Disco. I've experienced no
difference in mileage or performance when switching between premium(say 91
octane) and mid-grade - 89 octane. I regularly switch between the two
depending upon my mood. I recently used regular unleaded - 87 octane with
no knocking or noticeable difference in power. I do not think there was
much of a difference in mileage, but I am not sure. I plan to stick to mid
grade ot premium just to feel better - not very scientific but I'm sure
others on the list can provide more science.

Subject: Tire air downs/bounced mail/Soft top options.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments about tire airdowns. For the more serious trails I
think I will continue to air down a little to about 20PSI.

Is everyone else out there getting a lot of "undeliverable" error messages
every time you send mail? I am.

Can someone tell me about the surrey top for the Defenders. If you have one
do you like it? Etc? Last summer I ran with the bimini top all summer
because I didn't have the rear cage, and also had a garage to park in for
work. Now that I have the rear cage, and don't have the work garage anymore,
I don't know if I should keep the bimini and add the half tonneau or go
with the full length surrey. I don't mind a little rain but I don't really
want to get the D90 drenched. What would happen to the speakers etc?
Putting the Bestop full top on and off is a chore to say the least just
because it might rain. Does the surrey offer just enough protection?
Ahhh...life's tough decisions! :>)

Any suggestions or comments?

Cheers,
Barnett

I've had the same problem that Rob Dennis described, i.e. oil light
occasionally blinks at startup, stops blinking after about a minute. It
doesn't bother me.

Independent of the startup blink, a few months ago the light failed
entirely, i.e. it did not light when I turned the key. It turned out the
sender was fine, but the sender wire was trashed. I never found exactly
where the wire was bad, I just ran a new one.

Subject: New 4x4 XPC tires for RR?

If any RR owners have put the new 4x4 XPC tires on their rovers, what
is your opinion of them, especially their off road ability and durability?

I'm sure they are fine road tires but they look like they would be only
average in snow and poor in mud. I also worry about their ability to
resist sidewall cuts, etc. Then there's the awful price.
No one seems to know much about them except that they are "better"
than the old 244 in some unknown way. I'm afraid it may be that the
"improvements" are more for on road than off road.

The other option appears to be going to 225/75 16s and getting BFG ATs
(had these on a J**p and loved them), MTs or maybe Michelin LTX ATs.
I've heard several stories, some that this size works fine and also that it
will destroy my rover. The dealer of course says I will condemn my
soul to eternal darkness if I change the tire size. I'd love to go to taller
(not wider, say 215/85) but don't see any way short of new springs.
Any first hand experience with the 225/75?

It probably all boils down to how the 4X4 XPC stacks up against the BFG
off road. If the BFG is not that much better off road, then I'll stick with
stock. If the XPCs are really going to be a disadvantage then it might be
worth the switch. Anyone care to give a comparison of the XPC to
other, more common, AT tires like the BFG?

Thanks in advance for all the wisdom,
William

Affected Discovery's for this recall have VIN numbers last six digits in the

Hi:

This is my first post on this BB. I have an 89 RR 3.9, that has just been
diagnosed as having a bad ignition switch. When I got the replacement part,
much to my dismay, I saw two new keys!!!

1. Do I have to carry a separate key for the door locks ??(If I want to lock
the car)

2. Is it possible to get one re-keyed to the other????

My mechanic tells me no to #2, and yes to #1. Says there is usually not
cross referencing.

It all just sounds like a setup for disaster

Thanks for your help

Well I don't have one now, but I'm gonna get one this weekend. The guy I'm
getting it from has two, and swears by it. We get a lot of summer afternoon
thunder showers in New Mexico, and he has reported no problems (water). I'm
gonna run with the full tonneau and the surry top just for added protection
and security. I've never heard of the 1/2 tonneau. Does it cover the rear
to the front seats?

As far as water damage, I got the "hoseable" interior and have on more than
one occasion, taken the coin-op sprayer to the interior. I try to avoid the
speakers directly, but they do get wet. I'm not worried about them because
they are made of a "poly" something or other and are VERY resistant to
water. To date, no problems.

And now to my stupid question of the day. Where do you attach the bimmi top
"straps" to the rear of the vehicle? I've just attached to the rear light
bar, but I'm not sure if this is correct. Any comments?

I am installing a Rover v8 into my SII 109".
The '91 3.9v8 seems to have only the "idiot light" press. switch.
Do the '91's have oil press. as an option?
On the pump housing/oil cooler adaptor there are 3 or 4 plugs (from
drilling the oil passages?) Is any of the 4 good to substitute with a press.
sender?

Also, what is the bypass on the lower radiator hose for?
And could someone be kind enough to copy a page with the '91 ECU wiring?
Thanks
Jan

Well, I regret to inform that a friend of mine is forced to sell his '94
D90 #1748. He is my/our local area LR mechanic, and has kept the vehicle
very well. The vehicle is red and has the rear seat, soft top, and the '95
trans/clutch. It has 25.5K miles and is a very "tight" vecichle. The asking
price is $28.5. If anyone is interested you can contact me via email or
Bill Rhoades directly @ (505)474-3610.

Guy,

I also had trouble with the distributor on my 88RR. In my case, the
centrifugal advance was seized solid in the 'fully advanced' position
due to moisture getting in there and probably no previous maintenance
(a drop of oil under the rotor).
To cure this I removed the distributor from the engine (probably not
necessary) removed the rotor, the plastic cover, the pickup, vacuum
advance diaphram etc. and the plate underneath. This exposes the
centrifugal advance mechanism.
The part that has the rotor fitted to it rotates on an inner shaft
and is held down by a flimsy (and invisible) plastic clip/ring. This
plastic ring is inside the 'hollow' under where the rotor fits.
In my case this platic bit disintegrated when I withdrew the centrigugal
advance mechanism upwards off the shaft, but in the end it does not seem
to be a crucial part.
Anyway, after removing the advance mechanism, you will see some pivoted
weights and springs.
In your case I suspect that the plastic retaining ring has already let
go and allowed the advance mechanism to partially disengage with the
weights and springs.
It should be fairly obvious how all this fits together again.
When putting all this back, adjust the pickup gap to between 0.008 to
0.014 thousandths with a non-ferrous feeler gage.
I found that the plastic retaining ring was not necessary and the
assembly stays together OK without it. Be careful when removing the
rotor next time to not lift the centrifugal advance assembly up with
it.
Sorry if this sounds confusing but it really is not very difficult if
you are at all mechanically inclined.

Hope this helps,
Andrew Dobrowolski,
88 RR.

Even if you end up with 2 keys, consider yourself lucky.
1980's 110's in Oz had FIVE from the factory:
Ignition, different keys for each front door, fuel filler,
and a wonder multi-purpose key which operates the rear door, centre
console and bonnet.

My intuition is that you could end up with a single key for your RR.

I have a surrey top for my D-90 and I like it very much. It does a good job
of protecting the inside in mild rain (we get lots in Seattle) and it is very
quick to remove if and when the sun is out.

I don't have the set up but saw one with two small brackets (loop with screws
at both ends) added to the back of the vehicle. I believe it is stock
because it was dealer added to the D-90.

I have the same interior. The only concern I had were the rear speakers. I
didn't know that the cones were polypropylene. Everything else is like the
outside anyhow, (metal and rubber)!

As far as the bimini top goes when I bought mine last year it came with two
cleats that I mounted to the top of the rear body cap. Located them about
1-2" out from the plastic retainers that hold the metal bar that attaches
to the bottom of the rear window on the 95 Bestop.

>I've never heard of the 1/2 tonneau. Does it cover the rear to the front
seats?
Yes. The 95 Defenders don't have any snaps on the dash like the 94's. The
1/2 tonneau covers the back up to the front seats only. Looks pretty good
actually and does give you a way to hide some gear from view.

As far as airing down goes I will try 15PSI next time out and see how it
works.

Cheers,
Barnett

>Ahhh...life's tough decisions! :>)

I have the surrey, and the full tonneau cover (mine is a 1994, ha ha, we got
a full tonneau, but had to pay thru the nose for our top!) but as yet, I
haven't experienced any rain. Since you now have the full cage, you need the
surrey top. If you have anyone in the rear, they'll need sun-shielding too,
or rain protection if that be the case.

Half tonneau? never knew one existed. I guess you mean that it only cover
the REAR cargo section? Problem with that is that when it rains at night ,
the front seats are gonna get soaked with no protection. With the full
tonneau, at least when parked, there is a cover . Easy for me to say since
I have them, but seems to me like for rainy weather, you gotta have the
surrey and a full tonneau. Short of the surrey, at your point, don't you
think the full tonneau is where the first dollars should go?

You said that you don't really get that wet while moving, so parked is the
main concern, and the full tonneau 'covers' you there (sorry, ...). (Where
is David R when we need him... he' s our "lotso rain man" up there in NW.)
I'm just surmisin'. A wet butt on the way HOME is fine, but on the way IN
to work is not acceptable. You need protection while the truck is parked.
You can unzip only the driver's side for driving, that's bitchin'.

Speaking of "protection," all the time in Los Angeles with no top, only
surrey and tonneau, I never had any theft problem. AND I parked in an alley
with bums going up and down all the time looking for stuff. The very first
night, a sunday night, I go topless with surrey and tonneau here in lovely
midwest, I go out to truck Monday morn, and some little miscreant had
unsnapped the driver's door snaps and reached in for whatever they could get
their little villanous hands on... which turned out to be my 4-way flasher
button, and pulled it right off the dash and went on their way. I hope for
my own sake I never catch the littel b@$t@rd. I don't need a bailbondsmen on
top of everything else. They left my wheel lock, $20 flashlight (which I
would use to beat their nose to a pulp), a Nickel Metal Hydride cell phone
battery (damn near a C note there...), and assorted Bluegrass music tapes (
I'd shoot them thru the eye socket for takin' those!!).

Oh well, such is the life of a convertible.

I'll report on our first rain, and how sweet that life is!
JOhn.

What about taking an axe to the fenders? Maybe pouring brake fluid on teh
hood, and keying the back? THat would give the vehicle the used and low down
look, and it wouldn't attract attention of thieves. I've never had a winch
stolen offa any of the rust buckets I used as winter beaters years ago when I
lived here in midwest.

I'll do this with my defender as soon as I get a winch.

The bimini top that I got with my 94 came with a set of the same snaps that
are used for the top and tonneu as well as instructions for placement. Two
holes had to be drilled into the rear body panels. One hole is just to the
side of the plate lamp. The other is in the same spot on the opposite side.
The snaps are then just pop-rivited into place.
