Subject: Camshaft prob in "new" RR

Just had the rough idle checked out by my local dealer here in Nashville.
It appears to both my and the service man's shock that my "new" 90 RR
has a bad camshaft at 84,000 miles. I thought Rover engines would last
forever. Service guy says its rare, could be poor maintenance by PO
or maybe just weak part to start with. Everything else looks OK though.

I'm beginning to believe the dealer in Atlanta where I bought the RR
misrepresented or even lied about several things. The Atlanta tech said
the compression on one cylinder was a little low but within spec and no
problem. Wrong! My only consolation is that I got a 12,000 mi. warranty
which should cover the work (estimate = approx $2500!!!). Will be taking
it in for the major surgery on Monday and will be Roverless for a week.

In the week I've had the RR I've fallen in love with it but now I'm afraid I'll
always be worried about what else is going to go out. I feel like a
gullible fool who got taken. I'm sure none of you would ever make this
mistake, but never take a someone's word about a vehicle, even a
supposedly reputable dealer. Check it out yourself. I tried but the
distance involved hindered me and my desire for the vehicle probably
blinded me too.

Thanks for letting me vent.

John,

Sorry to hear about the flasher button theft... You'd never think
that'd be such a hot item (although, mine was originally broken when
I got my D90, so maybe they brake often and this guy was just
"getting" (read: stealing) a replacement part. If these are braking
all the time, they could be the next "hot item" for the black market!
;-)

That brings up more points/concerns I have about my "beast." Since my
cubby lock is broken, some on the list have recommended I get a steel
center console. This sounds like a good idea, but I have some
questions:
1. How much?
2. Where do I get one?
3. What's installation like (ie: radio, etc.)?
4. Does it have that "protection" type of flap to hide the stereo and
"protect" it from a slight rain?
5. What does is look like? (is it basically the same box just made in
metal?)
6. Is it lockable?
The way I have my cubby now, I keep some basic tools, my mag-lite,
and cassettes. I sectioned off the cubby with some wood strips that
I ripped down to under a1/4" wide & various heights, then and notched
them to "compartmentalize" the cubby. Works pretty good at keeping
things separated and easily accessible. Just make sure you know how
you're going to section off the inside so you can utilize the maximum
space of the little cubby.

Next Question (I've seen a beginning of this discussion thread):
What is the best way to secure (ie: protect from thieves) the rear
tire?

In an unrelated note, I can't seem to figure this out: when LR
re-releases the D90 again, are they only offering the SW model, or
will the softtop be available again?

BTW, I was actually stopped getting into my beast at the gas station
by some curious lookers-on who wanted to know more about my baby. I
was only too happy to oblige them, and kept talking til I'm sure they
were bored silly.

Greetings,

Well thanks for the comments, but the bimmi that came with my vehicle has
velcro on the ends of the straps, no snaps. No big. I might just cut off
the straps and eliminate the issue all together, I don't see any benefits.
Comments?

Another comment I have is has anyone had any experience with the Safari
Guard +2" rear suspension drops? I just got Greg s catalog and am dribbling
all over the picture of the D90 with TONS of rear travel. How do they work?
Do you loose upward travel? Pros/Cons? Cost?

William,

I've heard that it's not that unusual for the Rover V8 to need a cam
around 100K miles. (Mine had almost exactly that.) I blame poor
maintenance. I think if you change oil every 3K it should last a good
long time.

I would strongly suggest that you have the heads (valve job) done while
you're right there. SHOP AROUND! I found prices anywhere from $350 per
head, to $135 for the pair! Also, go with a reputable shop! They also
replaced the valve guides on mine. Make sure they can do aluminum heads.

I love mine too! But still have various "Lucas demons" lurking about.
For example, I keep blowing fuses for the rear wiper, and occasionally,
the turn signal flasher indicator on the dash doesn't blink. (But not
always.)

Good luck with your RR. And THANK GOD FOR WARRANTY'S! (No warranty on
mine.)

I'm heading up to the La Farge area next week and plan to do some
off roading the afternoons of Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. If anyone
is interested, let me know.

La Farge is located north west of Madison and south east of La
Crosse. There is a large tract of public land just north of the town of La
Farge on either side of rt. 131. The land was condemned for a federal dam
project but the dam was never built. The land is managed by the Army Corps
of Engineers and is not part of the federal or state park system. The
closest analogy is BLM land.

I have never been there. I have topo maps and have used a plat book
to outline the borders of the public land. I do know the area is used by a
number of off road clubs. I do not know the location of the trails. On
Thursday, I plan to scout the area to find trail heads etc. I plan to
return on Sat afternoon to do some more exploring. The "law" in Wisconsin
is that licensed vehicles can use any "road" even a two rut dirt trail, so
long as 1) it is not chained, barricaded or posted and 2) it is not on
private land. I figure that if I find some trails and can establish via the
maps that they are on public land, the trails are there for the exploring.

I plan to abide by the "tread lightly" code and am not anxious to
damage my truck. If you are interested, we can figure out a meeting place
in La Farge.
If you happen to know about any trails in the area, and are willing to share
the info, please share!

I have a '94 D90 with the original bumper with the signals in it. I've
heard a few people mention that they have gone to '95 style bumpers
without moving the signals. What I'm wondering is whether this means
there are people with a pair of spare signal lamps sitting around
gathering dust. One of mine fell out sometime last offroad trip and I
could use a replacement. <GRIN>

If it is a Black '94 it is probably mine. Here's the scoop on D90
suspension travel (most of this Greg worked out....)

Stock: Sway bars limit travel. Severly

No Sway Bars: Shocks limit drop. Inner fenders limit upward travel.
(All the shocks, OME, Bilstiens, LR, are the SAME size.)
Since the inner fenders limit upward travel Greg found he can move
the shock mount points a couple inches. (Probably closer to 1.5"
rather than 2") Early versions (mine) move the point on the axle
up. He was talking about a new version that dropped the top point
as more costing less and being more robust. Anyway, drop is increased.
He also moves the bump stops down a bit to keep the tires off the
fenders.

Greg's Shock Kit: Springs limit travel. Have to put in spring retainers
to keep them from poping out. OR, go to longer RR springs. I think
you want the 150-180lb/in progressives from a 89ish RR. 2 rear left side
do the trick.

I've got the drop kit and spring retainers. Haven't had the chance to
check out the RR springs yet. (Tax collector....)

Anyway, cost wasn't bad. Don't notice any major difference though. Frankly
anytime I'm that cross axled I'm on the lockers. (Definitely was in
those pictures.)

Only con I can see so far is cost. If your D90 has everything else
it is worth the try.

Does anyone know how to gain access to the wiper motor on a '87 RR? My
windshield wipers are hanging up (linkage is binding during each swipe
across the window.) Maybe it's that "WW-2... what ever it was" that is
being used instead of modern grease.

That's the front windshield, not rear window.

Thanks,

While the 110 NAS is pretty cool, I would be hard pressed to take one with

Hello all, There's been some talk lately about nerf bars, and aluminum
body longevity with regard to trail damage. I'd like to share a brief
story about the '94 Discovery that I used to own. Sold because it was
"too hard to draw", right? Okay, I couldn't afford her. :( Anyway,
within the first week or so, I was goofing off, and drove up a freeway
overpass ramp (the under side of a freeway bridge.) This was roughly 35
to 40degree incline, which the Disco handled with absolutely no qualms,
except that the trailer hitch/bumper, (or unknown part?) dragged on the
way up. No problem, I thought, but then on the way back down (note, that
since this was straight up, and there was a freeway as a "roof" I
couldn't proceed forward) I caught the tail pipe on the ground, and
managed to wrap the pipe, and muffler around the rear axle, which then
bent the aluminum body causing a crease at approximately the "1:00"
position above the rear tire. (A maneuver that I DON'T recommend!) as
well as tearing off one of the mud flaps. (A weak Disco point.) After
pulling the muffler away from the tire, I could once again proceed, and
limped home with a broken truck, and hurt pride. (Did I mention that
there was around 20 or so of my friends watching??)

To make a long story short, (too late!) the body bent back to a very
close resemblance of original, save for a rather large spot where the
paint chipped off from flexing. In the end, I had a friend repair it so
I could sell it without taking a large loss. It didn't work (the large
loss, that is) as I still took a $10K loss on a 9 month old Disco with
17K miles. (Drove it a LOT, absolutely loved it!)

All in all, I'd rather have the aluminum that can be bent back to some
resemblance of original shape, over steel that can't.

Keep the aluminum side up.... Dave (known for stupid tricks) Brown

You would be surprised. The dealer in my area just sold a 110 for $60K!
Granted Santa Fe has lots of LOADED people in it, but sheezz. '94 D90's in
my area are still goin for 30K with 20K miles! Good news, but I wonder what
the '97's will do to that. Anyway, a vehicle is worth what people (some)

I have a set of Locking Lugnuts. The come in sets of 5, one for the spare
tire. Make sure you get a set for the D-90. The set made for the Disco
doesn't fit the spare on the Station Wagon. There are several styles
out there. On my ragtop, the set has a cover that looks like the standard
lug nut. On my wagon there is no cover, so you can see that it is keyed.

The way I understand it is that the Wagon will come first, followed by
the ragtops. Makes sense, the wagons will be arriving in winter, the
ragtops in spring.

But... no 110's or 130's :-(

Surrey top

Subject: RE:Soft Top Options

I just bought the bimini top for my Defender with full safari cage. We had wind
gusts of 50mph and a thunderstorm yesterday in Baltimore, one of many to come
:-( , I folded the seats forward and they stayed dry. The speakers are supposd
to be waterproof, aren't they? I also was considering purchasing the half
tonneau but I wonder if it is worth it unless you just like the look. Baltimore
summers have severe thundertorms that last for minutes followed by rain/drizzle
from a couple hours to all day, quite frequently. Also how does the bimini top
do when driving in the rain?

My bimini came with two metal loops which they expected me to drill holes into
the sheetmetal to install. They are supposed to go next to the plastic
retainers for the window on the full soft top. I couldn't bring myself to drill
the sheetmetal, I just bought the truck last month , so I just wrapped the
straps around the rear roll cage below fender cap.

About those tonneaus, do you have to remove the side windows for the full
tonneau? And if you remove the side windows don't you get wet while driving in
the rain?

Subject: RR Liftgate Adjustment

Help! My liftgate has been getting progressively more difficult to open!
I thought there was a section in the repair manual about adjusting the
length of the rods, but I can't locate. Can anyone point me to the right
page, or better yet, just tell me in plain terms how to get the thing
operational again. It's quite embarassing to be seen tugging vigorously on
one's liftgate(isn't it?! ;-))

Cheers! John Cassidy Bangor, Maine

Photos are best but here goes an attempt. Please add/correct anything
here. I own a Surrey, Bimini, Full tonneau, '95 Bestop Full Soft Top
and the plastic hard top. I think at least two versions of both
the Surrey and Bimini top have been offered for sale by LRNA. At least
mine don't match all the brouchers I've seen.

>Surrey top
A full soft top without sides (literally). Mine is made by Bestop.
Slightly different than the ones pictured in some of the LR brochures.
Requires the
rear portion of the roll cage. Very easy to install.

>Bimini top
Covers just the driver and front passenger seats. It stretches between the
wind screen and the central roll bar. Two straps go down to the rear of
the cargo bed. Footman's loops required on the back bed rails, right above
the speakers for the straps. Easy to install. Cheap. Noisy.

>Full tonneau
A '94 option. Similiar to a pickup truck cargo bed cover but in addition to
covering the D90 bed area will also cover the driver and front passenger areas.
Similar in concept to the 50's ish sports car application. Can
cover just the passenger side. Very cool looking. Mine shreaded in about
3 weeks of heavy use. Since I added a '95 Bestop Full Soft top it won't
work any more any way. ( Snaps instead of channels:( ) For the '94 full
tonneaus the doors tops need to be removed to fully seal the front up.
Very annoying. I was very happy when my full top finally showed up.
Of course then it stopped raining....

>Half tonneau
I assume a '95 option to make up for lack of a full tonneau. Never heard
or seen one before. Just covers the cargo area?

>Bestop
The orignial '94 NAS D90 optional full soft top was made by Tickford. An
English company. Very British looking but LRNA received numerous complaints
concerning quality and function. LRNA contracted Bestop (a Jeep soft top
manufacture) to come up with something better. While it is missing the
classic looks of the the Tickford the Best Top is widely conceeded to be
better. Less noisy. Better Built. Locally the dealers no longer repair
Tickfords under warranty. They replace them with Bestops.

My preferences: No Top (Why I bought the damn thing!)
                 Surrey Top
                 Full Soft top
                 Oct-March: Fiberglass hard top.

I find the Bimini top too noisy. Also doesn't stop the over the top
back draft nearly as well as the Surrey top. Definitely will look
at the Half tonneau as a possible way to protect the cargo area contents
from weather and prying eyes. 5-10 minutes and the Surrey top and
top door halfs are on. Generally travel with the at least the Surrey top
and door tops to deal with cold summer nights, mountain passes, etc.
during the summer. Longer summer trips I will throw in the full soft top.
The full soft top leaks the least in heavy rain while parked. The plastic
hard top leaks the least while in motion.

I also tried to use the lower grades of gas in mine. It performed just fine
until I tried to climb some of the steeper, longer slopes in these parts.
Then there was a noticeable drop in performance and an increase in engine
knock. If I were driving between the Rockies and the Appalachians, I'd
consider lower grades especially if the price for self-service, premium
unleaded is from $1.799 to $1.859 per gallon as it is in this town.

I was down on Cape Cod (Mass) at Badgers interior where
LRNA sends all its tickford tops for repairs under warranty. Chris Laws was
still getting loads of tops to be reworked. Additionally, he is customizing
tops to customer orders. Latest trick is to add two windows on the rear
facing section to give the car a Station Wagon appearance.
Dam it looked smart.

Next stop is a fixed sunroof for the 90. Of course with all the work
that he does repairing some bits of material have to be cut out and replaced. He
He uses the waste material to make tool rolls and luggage. His reworked tops are
easy to spot with stronger zippers etc.

If you want to give Chris a call he is located in
South Dennis Ma 508 394 2680.

Subject: Timing Gear Recall

Yikes, an earlier post set forth VIN numbers subject to a recall to replace
a weakened timing gear and my vehicle fall within the numbers:

151624 - 163102 and 5000000 - 501910

What is the proper protocol here? Shouldn't I have received something from
my dealer (Berndt in Milwaukee)? Arnold Yoon - did you take your vehicle to
Berndt? If so, did they inform you of the recall? My power steering box is
a bit leaky along with a few other minor items . . . sounds like it's time
to plan a trip to Berndt.
