This is very comparable to the stock 235/70-16 Mich. that is SO expensive. If you are doing a little off roading the BFG All terrain in the 225/75-16 size would be a good choice. In fact the new Discovery XD for the trek competitions will come out ot the showrooms on this very tire. People who have this tire tell me that it is quiet on the road and offers a bit better performance off road than the stock Mich's. Also with a little hunting around you could get 4 for about $500 versus $700 for the Mich's Mark Ritter ------------------------------[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960501 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Sometimes I overlook the simple solutions. Now I wonder if you could not just wrap the loop around the receiver behind the two side support bars? Have you done anymore work towards the front tow hooks. After further talks with Rovers North I am confused about where they can go. RN says they replace the tie down loops which are bolted to the frame. This seems fine in the rear. However, in the front my tie down loops are 2 U shaped pieces which apear to be welded to the frame. They are entirely different from the flat bolted pieces with round holes which are in the rear. I wonder if the brush bar or maybe the plastic bottom protector changed my setup. The plastic protector is supported by 2 small L shaped pieces which appear to be bolted to the frame. Does this make any sense? I expect I need to go ahead and remove the spoiler and plastic protector so I can get a better Idea of what is possible. I really wish there was some type of hook which would work with or without the spoiler (may stick out through it like factory one did), but I really doubt it. Anyway, it all has to wait until the RR gets back from its engine work at the dealer. I'm in a loaner Disco now. Its nice, but I like the RR better. Disco has much tighter, more sports car like handling. Probably the newer springs and bushings as well as the sway bar. It rides a bit rougher I think. It has more pep than mine and everthing seems smoother and quieter. However, I like the seating position and some of the small details on the RR better. I forget who said they would have to be without their's for 3 weeks, but the local dealer here sounds a little more reasonable, and I can drop it off whenever I want, so no waiting a month prior to the fix-it date. Among other things that are going to be repaired (and should be under warranty, no?) - right rear speaker - Rust (by the front vents... it seems there was an extra thin stip of metal attatched there without any paint, and it is rusting-it's about the size of a half of a dime but looks like it wants to spread), rust on the passenger door (yes! It stays open!!!!) - Pealing foam-type stuff on the exterior roll cage by the rear of the driver's door (that 1/4" thick foam/type stuff that covers 8" or so of the roll cage before it re-enters the vehicle - Cubby lock apparently they will be able to have all this fixed (I doubt it, as they don't usually have all the parts handy and have to order them, so I get to make a return trip), but my fingers are crossed. Also, I got a chance to visit Seattle this last weekend, and saw 3 D90's, (black, red, & blue), and waved to all, but received no waves back (perhaps it was because I was a passenger in a Suzuki Sidekick! ;-). I also saw several Series vehicles, and some were in tremendous shape! it's odd to see so many older vehicles with so little rust when you come from a place where the roads are made of salt for 7 months out of the year. ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960501 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Hi all,
Russ. Turning the thumb wheel on the throttle cable is an option. But I
admit that I don't always "raise the hood" when winching.
Over the weekend I did a little work on my 95 D90 in preparation for the NH
safari mud run that has been canceled! Whine...moan...groan.
Anyhow...
1995 D90 tail lights; Just about everyone on the list knows by now that
water getting into the rear tail lights, corroding everything, and possibly
frying the harness has been a real pain for some of us 95 owners. This has
never been a problem with the 94's with the square tail lights, [All 1994
D90 owners laugh here! :>)].
Anyhow I took the lights apart this weekend. Even though I clean my truck
thoroughly after every outing, the connectors, and between the lenses and
the body were packed with dirt and mud. There was water in all but the
backup light and I think the only reason that was dry is that it doesn't
get sprayed as much as the other lights from the tires.
My solution. I thoroughly cleaned the connectors with a brush and cleaned
off all the corrosion on the pins. Then I packed the connectors with
lithium grease. I got all of the water out of the lens cover assemblies and
drilled some small 1/8' holes in the bottoms so the water can get out. The
water seems to be getting in thru the connectors and to a greater extent
around the bulb socket? The rubber gasket is rather porous. Water that gets
in has no way to drain out and over time enough water gets in until the
level is up to the bulb. Mine were about 1/3 rd full.
My fix doesn't prevent water from entering, but the connectors are
protected from corrosion and the water will drain out. From time to time I
will re-grease these as a regular maintenance item.
I will also check the new drain holes and clean them with a pipe cleaner if
they become clogged.
The other thing I did was remove the rear bumper. I was getting tired of
dragging the tail on everything as I departed some of the tougher areas on
the trail. This was easy only a few bolts to remove. My departure angle is
much better! I never tow anything anyhow. I will put a Dixon/Bates pin
assembly on the rear frame member for a strong attachment point for a tow
rope, etc. An added bonus was exposing two holes in the rear frame member
that will accept the Jackall attachment. With the Superwinch HD bumper up
front, this gives me a solid jacking point at each corner of the vehicle!
Cheers,
Barnett

I just adjust the thumbwheel in the throttle cable (3.9L). Since
it is recommended to keep the hood up as protection from the cable
this is preety easy to do.

Nya-nya. Seriously, we get the other problem that encountered a few weeks ago. One nice bump from a root or mudbank and the turn signals pop right out of the front bumper. I went back a week later and POOF, there it was! Now all I need is that silly little rubber grommet that supposedly holds in the signal assembly. <GRIN> ------------------------------[ <- Message 8 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960501 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

It's in at the dealer now being fixed under warrantee (my > dealer is fairly competent) and I'll letcha know what the deal is. I'll bet it turns out to be the stub axel seal. After looking over all the responces to my post (BTW- Thanks to all who responded) and looking over the diagrams and overhaul instructions in the service manual, I'm pretty sure it's what my problem is. The hub basicaly rides on the stub axel which is a tube comming out from the swivel pin housing. The drive shaft is inside the tube and connects to the hub at the outside of it. The stub axel seal keeps the oil from the swivel pin housing from getting into the tube and then out of the end and into the hub where it will contaminate the grease. Another possibility is that the stub axle itself is not tightly secured to the swivel pin housing which would cause the contact seal there to leak, but in that case it would not be mixing with the hub grease and forming the nasty black stuff. It'll be interesting to see what they find. Rob ============================================================================= _________ | Robert D. Ron,
Good to hear from you! :-) The Ducati was in the garage and is a
1994 M900 Monster with a K+N jet kit and air filter, Corbin seat, Staintune
stainless slip ons, and a couple of other goodies. I usually let them
sweep the sand off the road before I take it out! Last year, Midcoast
Motorsports in Searsport had an Italian day(Ducati and BMW Dealership) and
I was the one of the first to arrive in Bucksport. There was a really old
Guzzi and another Ducati. After about 15 minutes of despair and waiting, a
virtual flotilla of blood red bikes poured into the parking lot! :-)
Ducatis there were; 916, 888, 750 SP and CR, M900's, 2 F1s, a couple of
Guzzis, a Laverda and a couple of others...about 20 in all. One guy drove
up from Portland and another down from Canada! I'll let you know when it's
coming up again! We drove an excellent route around Castine and Deer Isle
with really great roads! When the riding was done, we went back to the
shop for a spaghetti feed(what else!) and talk. It was GREAT! Sometimes
you get lonely owning these individualistic modes of transport!
I spoke directly with ZF corporation today and the fella there said
that most BMWs and older Jaguar engines would mate with the ZF4H22...he
said Mercedes doesn't use their trannies!? I may look at some BMW choices,
but will probably settle back with the Chevy. One place I called said I
shouldn't use a transmission built for petrol use with a diesel...something
about the gearing. The guy at ZF said that Jaguar is the only automobile
that uses the heavy duty A-plate clutch found in the Range Rover due to the
power of their engines. I don't know much about them, so I couldn't say.
Jan is going to send me the TC, due mainly to the fact that the Land
Rover dealer said the TC from my 1987 tranny is not interchangeable with
the newer tranny! Jan can get another from England for about $60 and I
told him I'd pay for it. I feel much better! ;-) Catch you later!
Cheers! John

Subject: RR engine swap options
Most of you have followed my rantings about putting a Chevy Vortec V-6
in my 1987 RR...well, I finally took delivery of my replacement tranny; a
ZF 4HP22 out of a 1991 RR(with the viscous center diff lock). I called all
over hell to see if there are any other engines that I can mate up with it
and got little help. I called ZF Coporation directly and Ron Perlow(?sp)
in the technical department said that most BMW enginew would mate up to it
and also some of the older Jaguar engines. He also said that Jaguar is the
only car company to use the ZF tranny with the heavy duty clutch plate as
seen in the RR! No one else uses it for passenger cars/trucks!
I E-mailed back and forth with Sarry at Mark's adaptors in Australia.
He said that an adaptor to join a Chevy bolt pattern to the RR automatic
tranny was not high on the priority list right now and gave me the name and
number of a RR specialist in Melbourne who I will contact tonight. He said
they may have an adaptor already in the works. I'll let you all know!
Any ideas about BMW engine options(seems an appropriate swap now,
doesn't it! ;-))? I'm not familiar with the BMW specs and the various
models and internet searching reveals little information. Thanks for any
help!
Cheers! John Cassidy Bangor, Maine

Subject: 3.5L to 4.7L kit
I was on the phone tonight(tomorrow AM in AUS), speaking to Mr. Ross Stuart
of Ritter Automotive in Melbourne, asking if his company supplied adaptors
to fit a Chevy engine to the ZF 4HP22 tranny, and he does not. They do,
however, offer a kit for about $2,500(which includes crank, pistons and
other assorted pieces) to increase the size of the 3.5L Rover engine to
4.7L. He has no dyno tests, but states that tests at the rear wheel
indicated a roughly 50% increase in horsepower. He states that they also
supply high performance manifolds and exhaust components that could yield
another 15% increase in HP.
He says that the conversion has been extremely reliable and has not
caused any problems with the stock ZF tranny. His number is 613-9808-0266,
or fax at 613-9808-0095. He'll be faxing me kit prices...there's no
catalog yet. I told him about the internet lists and digests and he was
quite excited! Especially when I told him I found Mark's 4WD on the web,
and not him!

Are there 2500 soft tops for both '94 and '95 or were there 2500 each year? BTW, Does anyone on the list know of good trails located anywhere between southern PA and northern VA?, Thanks. One more question. Where can I get a 13mm sqaure drive to remove the drain and fill lugs on the differentials? The guy at Home Depot looked at me like I was crazy when I asked and the dealer here doesn't sell tools. I don't know much about them, so I couldn't say. I don't know how much this'll help, but there are many ready-made plates for conversion of older Jag engines to other transmission combinations. My '78 series II XJ-6L had major transmission problems and I opted for a much cheaper Chevy 400 series tranny, which at least would cost less if I had to replace it again. It's been running strong for quite some time and actually puts more power to wheels more quickly than the stock one did. John's Cars out in Texas specializes in engine and tranny conversion plates and may have something that could help. They might also be willing to manufacture something custom for ya. ------------------------------[ <- Message 15 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960501 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
