Antonios,

Are

I think the numbers were around 1000 for 94 and 1500 for 95.

I removed my diff plugs with a 1/2" or it might have been a 3/4" driver?
Was a while ago but worked just fine.

Subject: 3.5L to 4.7L

I was on the phone tonight(tomorrow AM in AUS), speaking to Mr. Ross Stuart
of Ritter Automotive in Melbourne, asking if his company supplied adaptors
to fit a Chevy engine to the ZF 4HP22 tranny, and he does not. They do,
however, offer a kit for about $2,500(which includes crank, pistons and
other assorted pieces) to increase the size of the 3.5L Rover engine to
4.7L. He has no dyno tests, but states that tests at the rear wheel
indicated a roughly 50% increase in horsepower. He states that they also
supply high performance manifolds and exhaust components that could yield
another 15% increase in HP.
He says that the conversion has been extremely reliable and has not
caused any problems with the stock ZF tranny. His number is 613-9808-0266,
or fax at 613-9808-0095. He'll be faxing me kit prices...there's no
catalog yet. I told him about the internet lists and digests and he was
quite excited! Especially when I told him I found Mark's 4WD on the web,
and not him!

Try the standard 1/2" drive ratchet. As I recall, that's what I used.
Just your regular old 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar, but without putting a
socket on the end.

Good luck!

Subject: Re: RR engine swap options

John,

Have you spoken to the guys at Sierra Autosports in Nevada?
They are the U.S. rep for B&H services. If not, give em a buz at
702-322-6266. They do alot of RR conversions. The most popular
being 5L Ford motors, but B&H makes Chevy adapters too. What
are the specs of the Vortec motor (torque, HP, weight)?

I've been toying with the idea of swapping a Chevy small block
into my D90. The biggest problem is weight. However, there are
several manufacturers of aluminum 350-400 blocks (Rodek, Donovan,
Mitchell, GM, etc.). There is no comparison between the cost and
availablity of parts. In some cases, you can buy race quality
parts for less than what they rape you for on LR parts. Think
about it, RN wants ~7K for the JE short block. We get full blown,
fully built, 358, dry sumped race motors from our engine builder,
for the same price, that live under extreem conditions and have
helped keep us one of the top finishers. You can buy a used
EFI LT1 vette crate motor for ~3K with everything including
all the electronics and emmissions stuff. Used aluminum blocks
can be found where sprint cars are raced. They are kind of
expensive new, 3 to 4K. People getting out of raceing often sell
off everything cheap so the track's a good place to get a deal.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you can build a fully street
legal engine using an alum block & heads (BTW - Block weight is
~100lbs with sleeves and caps) and light weight parts that will
weight LESS than the stock LR motor setup. If you do it while
the LR motor has low miles on it, you could probably get back
a good amount of the cost by selling it. Another big plus is
that you wont have any Lucas stuff in your engine wiring.

Food for thought,
Rob

Antonios, I did both my diffs with a 1/2" socket drive extension, it removed
teh plugs fine, worked on the xfer case and trans if I remember correcty too.

don't need no stinkin' 13mm square drive...in fact, don't need no socket at
all...

Last fall when my transmission temperture sensor was acting up I bought my
first can (plastic bottle actually) of ATF. The friend with me at the time
said the Dextron III replaced the Dextron II. Since he has
repaired/replaced more automatic transmissions then I have (2+ to 0) I
trusted his judgement.

I did not need it in the tranny but I have been using it to top up my PS
reservoir.

BTW, checking my manuals, the RR service manual (rev. 03/90) says to use
Dextron IID. Our 94 GMC's service manual recommends Dextron III or II-E in
the automatic and the can of Citgo Dextron III I have says it can be used
where Dextron II-E and Dextron II are required.

According to the Bosch Automotive Handbook, 3rd Ed, 1993, Dextron IIE is a
new classification with improved low temperture properties. Dextron III is
not mentioned.

Not LR content, but I bet you do not know want GMC stands for. Hint, G does
not stand for General.

Last fall, the day after we bought our RR, the tranny temperture light came
on for us (while we were on our way to RN). Our manual says to shift to a
lower gear (more flow through the transmission cooler) or stop and idle in
neutral until the light goes off.

With no smell or burnt looking oil RN said it was the sender and after
replacing, we have not had the light on again.

according to RN, the only time you should see that light is after a day of
driving in heavy sand or such.

Subject: 3.5L to 4.8L

On the phone again tonight with Mr. John Davis of John Davis Motorworks in
Sydney Australia discussing boring/stroking options for the 3.5L engine
with him. He will supply a 4.8L engine, built in his shop, with an ECU
swap(new chip), and dyno'd for about $6,300 US with your core sent down to
him. He can supply the kit of parts required to do it yourself for about
$3,154.
Numbers for John Davis are; VOice: 612-9679-1179, Fax: 612-9679-1160.
Numbers for Ritter Automotive(Ross Stuart) in Melbourne are; Voice:
613-9808-0266, Fax: 613-9808-0095. The Australian phone system is adding a
"9" before the prefix to expand the exchanges, but there may be some
problems getting through using the "9." If so, dial the number without!
:-) Thought the info. might be useful to some of you interested in
increasing the CU of the Rover V-8. John Davis is getting online soon, and
Ritter Automotive is thinking about it.

Cheers! John Cassidy Bangor, Maine
