Your dealer's lying. The needle is lit by a fiber-optic cable that has
a tendency to fall out. You have to remove the instrument binnacle and
disassemble it (pretty straightforward, just have a clean smooth work
area). When you get in there you will see the cable -- it looks like a
limp, insulated wire. Plug it back in at the base of the speedo needle
and it should stay for a while. While you're in there, make sure the
one on the tach is snug. I made this fix to my speedo a while back and
then the tach went dark a few weeks later. Next time I will try to find
a way to "augment" the fit so they don't fall out again. Let me know if
anyone has a good idea for that.

The speedometer needle light on my '88 Range Rover does not light up when
the lights are turned on. The tach needle lights up just fine. Anyone have
an idea on how to fix this? I spoke with the Rover dealer in Boise, ID who
told me it would require a new speedo. At over $200, this seems like a high
price to pay so I can seen how fast I am going at night. Maybe I should
stick with a flashlight! I would appreciate any help....

Does anyone know what tires were used on the CT RRs? Were any

AFAIK, both 8.7:1 and 9.5:1 CR still available (with 3.5 34cc heads)

3.9 is stiffer block than the 3.5, bigger valves and overall better head design.
it's 3.7" (?? +/- - too lazy to check :) vs. 3.5's 3.5" bore.

Call Baker's auto or Dan LaGrou (D+D) or Hydromotive. All 3 have been building racing/boat/airplane 3.5-> 5.0's v8s for 20 years.

Don't forget the obvious on this problem. The fibre optic cable uses
one of the bulbs that back lights the speedo itself. If this bulb has
gone you will still be able to see the numbers (there are 2 other
lights) but the needle will be dark. I learned this lesson the hard
     way!!

I think I can help... When I bought my '87 RR the fuel gauge needle
didn't light up. Everything else lit up, including behind the fuel gauge
(the scale) but not the needle. I got some replies to check a fiber
optic connection (tearing the instrument cluster apart to get to it) or
carry a flashlight.

It turned out to be a dash light bulb burned out, and the one that was
burned out was at the TOP of the dash panel, directly OPPOSITE (furthest
away) from the fuel gauge! Pull the rear of the instrument cluster off,
and turn on the lights, and look for a bulb holder that isn't lit up. A
simple fix, $5 for a bulb from the dealer. (Although $5 was a bit
outrageous for such a TINY bulb if you ask me.) I think there were 3 or
4 dash light bulbs for each half of the cluster.

Good luck!

Check the heat shield between the muffler and the floorboard under the
drivers seat area. Mine rattled... till I bent it up a little.

My '95 disco has developed a rattle that is hard to track down. It appears
to be coming from under the truck, located near the driver's feet. It does
not rattle while driving, just when in drive with your foot on the brake.
This makes it a bit difficult to diagnose because every time I get out to
find it, it stops! Oh, did I also mention it is intermittant so it isn't
always there? Seems to disappear everytime I have someone handy to help
with the diagnosis.

Suggestions for culprits appreciated. Nothing is obviously loose in the
area the sound appears to be coming from, but maybe everything sounds like
it comes from under the drivers foot because the window is open. (8^0
It's a metallic rattle, maybe like loose sheet metal of some sort.

I can empathize about the lack of power at elevation. I often go up into
the mountains around Arizona USA and have the same anemic performance on
my Range Rover 3.5 EFI. Please let me know if you find anything that
helps!!!

One thing that I've heard helps is a "Flowmaster" (flow through) muffler
to reduce exhaust back pressure. I bought one, but have not had it
installed yet.

As for Lockers, I have Lock-Right lockers installed in the rear. They
help tremendously in off road situations. Power continues to BOTH wheels
even if one is in the air or losing traction. Although the Lock-Right
lockers work, and I like them, I would suggest getting something that
can be locked or unlocked on demand. ARB air lockers are currently the
only type I know of for now, but Lock-Right is working on a similar type
using electro magnets instead of air pressure. (I like this MUCH
better.) I'm not sure when they will be available, but at least not
until late this year, or early '97.

The locker replaces the spider gears in your differential(s) (front
and/or rear.) The front differential should not be locked full time as
your front wheels NEED to be able to rotate at different speeds when you
steer. (Again, lockers maintain constant force to BOTH wheels.) The
Lock-Right locker has an advantage over others in that it automatically
unlocks to allow one wheel to rotate faster than the other in the event
or steering (turning) the vehicle. This unlocking does have some
characteristics inherent to it, and that is a clicking, or ratcheting
sound when one wheel is rolling faster than the other, and depending on
conditions, (tight turns, while decelerating) can cause a "lurching"
affect as the power/ratcheting is transferred from one wheel to the
other and back This "lurching" is eliminated by applying slight throttle
during the turn, and is something that I've just learned to do as a
matter of course.

Another drawback to ANY locker is their behavior on an extreme side
slope. Locked differentials can increase the risk of sliding on an
extreme side slope. Therefore, a locker that can be unlocked on demand
is the ultimate solution.

These "characteristics," if you will, are why I am wanting to upgrade to
the "Demand locker" (electro magnet style) when they become available
for the Land Rovers. (Discovery, D90, and Range Rover)

Lock-Right can be reached at powertrax@aol.com or by phone at
1-800-LOCKERS. (I don't know if this works the same in S. Africa as it
does here in the USA though.) I have contacted the Lock-Right company
and offered to test their new locker on my Range Rover but have received
the typical "Don't call us, we'll call you" type of reply.

I know this sounds like a commercial for Lock-Right, but I really have
no association with them, just a satisfied customer. (With slight
"complaints" as I've stated above.) I know there are people who swear by
their ARB air lockers, and others that swear "at" them due to air lines,
fittings and such leaking and causing them not to function. Seems to me
that electrical connections can be made more "bullet proof" and reliable
than air fittings.

Good luck, and please let me know if I can be of further help.

Dave (long winded Today) Brown

Hi guys (and gals?)

Recently bought a '95 3.9L V8(8.13:1) Discovery. My situation is that I =
stay in Pretoria/Johannesburg in South Africa which is located =
(1500meters above sea level. Its not the top of K2 but high enough to =
effect a considerable loss of torque, especially between 1000 and =
2000rpm! This is quite frustrating when you know that the combined =
effort of 3.9liters into 8 pots is not getting you anywhere!! I am =
therefore investigating various options of addressing the "problem".

I don't want to go overboard, so I'm looking for a "middle of the road" =
solution. Any suggestions? I saw an advert for the Lichfield compressor =
(which qualifies for "overboard") but I am nonetheless intrigued. Has =
anybody fitted this? Any idea how much it costs? (I've faxed them twice =
but no response yet.)

I am also intrigued by so-called "lockers" or "Detroit lockers". I =
found an article about them somewhere on the 'net but the article does =
not state how / where it is fitted. Does fitting amount to fitting a =
different diff? How much does it cost? Where can they be obtained from?

Thanks for any / all contributions

I bought 4 small spring mounted tie-downs that fold over when not in
use. (They're always in use though, I never remove my toolbox and
"offroad" bin) I used sheet metal screws to attach them to the inside
wall of the RR. Close to the floor on the right hand side, and on the
rear wall just behind the spare tire, and side wall just in front of the
spare.

Only problem is I can't have the formed tire cover thing in place while
using the tie-downs. But if I ever wanted to, I could easily remove all
my "junk" and place the formed tire cover and security cover to look
completely "normal."

The tie-downs are invaluable while 4-wheeling! There's absolutely NO WAY
I could go where I've gone, and bounce the way I have without them!!

What do you Range Rover owners do for tie-downs? I've been using the rear
seat belt shoulder harness hooks for odd-sized things (like my bike), but
they are insufficient now that I've accrued a non-trivial amount of offroad
gear. I just can't see anything back there to clip a net or bungie cords

P.S. If anybody wants them, I just took the OEM running boards off my 1990

have to throw them away. (I'm thinking about welding them to my brother's

I made a deal with my wife. If I stop a particular extracurricular activity
(don't let your imagination get out of hand!), she agreed to purchasing a new
Disco XD. So... we're number one at the PHX dealership. The problem is, I'm
not convinced that I want one.

Here are some more details (sorry for the repeat of certain "facts"):
"AA Yellow exterior paint finish
Matte black bonnet inlay
Special "XD" exterior badging
Contoured heavy-duty rood rack system
Castor alloy wheels with black inset and bright finish outer ring
BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires
Wrap around fount brush grill w/ LR driving lights
Front undertray protection plates
Rear ladder and tail lamp guards
Waterproof seat covers (just what I need for AZ!)
Rubber floor mats"

>From another source: the price is expected to be around $36k.

I send a fax to Safety Devices looking for information. According to their
reply, they're making the new roof rack for this model. The total height if
this rack were retrofitted to an existing Disco is 83". Cost is #650 w/
shipping estimated at #300. They also said that they have an arrangement w/
Rovers North.

My problem: height of new vehicle. My garage entrance is only 83.5" high.
Wanda says "we can always raise the entrance to the garage". She's more
excited than I am. Why? I happen to like my Discovery. It is dependable,
runs great, and I've just about got it prepared the way I want. She likes
something different especially in vehicles. Strange since she doesn't like
off-roading. I guess that makes her SUV experience like 95% of the rest of
the world's population of SUV owners.

Since we have a few months to decide, it will sure get interesting as more
"facts" appear about the new XD model.

A camel trophy type of event here?? Test my personal stamina?? Damn this

Well, I can dream, can't I?

Here's a clip from a LR press release on the XD Disco:

The company has also announced a limited edition Discovery called
the XD. Painted in eye-catching AA yellow, the special Discovery will
be equipped for heavy duty off-road use including skid plates, BF
Goodrich All-Terrain 225 tires, and a wrap around brush bar with Land
Rover driving lights.
Ball also announced a new Camel Trophy-style competition for U.S.
Land Rover dealers called "Trek '96." Using the specially outfitted
Discovery XDs, participants will have the opportunity to test their
off-road driving skills against one another, as well as their personal
stamina and resourcefulness. An additional 250 of these vehicles will
be available in early 1997 with a target price of $36,000.

This is a common problem with the Range Rover, (I have fixed mine twice).
The red plastic speedo needle is lit by a little fiber optic thing and it
tends to fall out. I have typed out detailed instructions (you do have to
take the gauge "pod" out of the vehicle) and sent them to at least three
people on the LRO list. I hope at least one of them is reading this, my copy
disappeared when my Hard Drive crashed last month. Let me know and I'll type
how to fix it again if you don't get help.

Most Land Rover dealers seem to hire "parts replacers" instead of
"mechanics". I bought my RR from a doctor and it is almost painful to read
through all the dealer invoices he gave me.

I brought the Disco in for warranty work once after repeatedly wallowing
through a mud pit. It was literally covered from top to bottom with MUD!
I could see mud chunks through the sun roofs.

You see, it rains SO seldom here in Phoenix Arizona that, well, when it
does rain, I go a little bit crazy. I couldn't help it! BTW, I had used
"Rain-x" on all the windows, and it worked so well that the mud wouldn't
stick to the windows. It looked like I had intentionally cleaned ONLY
the windows.

The only comments I got were related to "there's one that gets USED!" I
got LOTS of stares though. Especially when I drove up wearing a dress
shirt and tie. (On my way to work.)

When I got it back, they had washed it twice, but there was still some
mud on parts, and actually, the mud stained the plastic sill protector
and front air dam. A little Armorall spray fixed that though.

I think the last rain we had was sometime in the fall of '95.
(Seriously, unfortunately.) We NEED the rain, as they are closing some
of the national forests due to the extreme fire hazard. (I wonder if my
$88 water bill for this month is "drought related?")

I have heard that they fit fine. In fact, up to size 235x85x16 will fit,
but require a bit if metal trimming. Don't know from first hand
experience, or exactly where you may need to trim though. Again, this is
not personal experience, but hearsay.

215's should fit without any problems unless your springs are sagging.
Mine has 205's on right now.

Chicago area LROs-
A friend just sent me an article from the May 5 (Sun) Chicago Trib on
offroad clubs in the Midwest. The article is mainly air about IL being
unfriendly to offroaders, so they all go to WI. One group, the
mudslingers, has a web page
(http://lagmaf.isdn.mcs.com/7EDodgeboy/mudsling.html). It is on page 1 of
section 12.

The LRO content is that the article has a big photo of a red d90 blasting
out of a ravine, both front wheels off the ground and a maniacal look on
the drivers face. It is at some offroad park in WI. The article also
mentions the strengths of LRs and J**ps offroad in passing, and that higher
priced hummer purchasers tend to go offroad more than most other SUV
purchasers.

Good photo though!!

Subject: Racks

Someone asked if the new XD rack/Safety Device rack for the Discovery is the
same as the CT Disco rack. After looking closely at several closeups of
each rack, they appear to be with several minor differences:
The CT rack attaches through the roof to the interior roll cage while the
production model attaches to the gutters.
The CT rack has “bands” that run from the top bar to the bottom bar that is
off-set from the top. These bands are used to mount the sand ladders.
According to the Slavin Expedition Roof Rack price list from Safety Devices,
these are a #46.50 option per side. I’m sure that a competent welder could
add them after the fact.

Other than those differences, they sure look like the same rack to me.
Perhaps the CT rack is a bit more over-built? Can anyone on the other side
shed any more light? Thanks...

A wacky way out thought. could the rattle be the anti return valve in the
brake vac booster. This was the case on my stage 1, and it took me ages
to isolate. twas a really "scary" harsh rattle only at idle and not
always, went away with just a few revs... sounded like it was coming
from the bottom left of the footwell ( g/box on a rhd..) not right under
my nose so to speak

Thanks for all the posts on the stiff clutch. The dealer bled it, and though
it is better, I noticed the clutch was a bit stiff again after sitting just a
tad, so the problem is not fully solved. I tend to think the problem would
be the slave cylinder in the bellhousing area, as it is just above the
catalytic converter, but the point about the piston expanding and hanging up
in the bore seems spot on. And also, just above the hot tarmac; the problem
happended also when first stepping on the clutch after a hot day at work (LA,

Well,
It aint pretty, but its there!
http://www.fluentnet.com

or

http://www.fluentnet.com/lr/
( for those who want to spare the shemeless plug for my company )

The Pages are "under construction" :)

the main page is a quickie for Fluent Networks
the lr subdirectory contains:

directories:

desert --- the second desert trip ( camera broke 1/2 way thru )
mendo_badge --- Mendo outing and badges ( 3 thru 5.jpg = badge )
Not_a_coast --- Precursor trip for Real Not_a_coast

the pictures in each directory go from ~1 to nnn.jpg in order of how
they were taken ( the stupid server OS will list them alphnubetically :)
the pictures are small ( yet big :) so even folks with dixie cups'n
strings can hope to see em in this lifetime.

I will eventually doctor up the pictures with text ( ya right dont' your
hold your breath, your lucky I got this far being a lazy B and all! )

Let me know what you think!

Tomw

Subject: Baby's 1st Birthday

Hi all,

Have been away on business for the last few days. Glad to see the list is
back!

My baby has turned one year old today!
1995 Defender 90, AA yellow, 23K miles, and no major problems to date!

I am still waiting for all of the stuff I have ordered from Safari Gard,
Greg is VERY busy; Bumper/bullbar/front skid plate, diff guards, air
sliders, rear skid plate, rear bumperettes.

Greg is making me a custom bumper/bullbar/front skid plate for my Defender
that will house my Superwinch Husky winch. His normal bumper is setup for
Warn winches and the Superwinch won't fit. Because I live in Mass and Greg
is in California I was really nervous about ordering something he hasn't
made before. Worried that something wouldn't fit right when I got it. We
called Superwinch and explained the situation, and they agreed to send a
Husky winch and roller fairlead to Safari Gard so Greg could get a perfect
fit for me! Talk about customer support! I have to say that really
impressed me.

Anyhow the winch arrived the other day and the bumper is on the jig and
being built.

Now if my patience can hold out!

Anyone interested in a slightly used Saftey devices bumper for a Superwinch
Husky winch? :>)

Cheers,
Barnett

Subject: Re[2]: Camel Trophy tires - was Shocked Disco

This year Land Rover changed over to the new Michelin tire, which I think is
called the XZL, LRNA sent me the specs of the 96 Camel Disco If I have the
initials wrong, I'll post the correct name

If any of you have the June LRO, you can see the new tire on a few of the camel
vehicles in the trials

regards
Chris Browne
