Maybe something that would be like the bicycle rack, that would plug
into the receiver hitch? And also, like the bicycle carrier, be able to
fold down to allow for the tailgate to open?
Anyone good with a welder?
This could affect the departure angle though... Maybe, as far as an
exterior mount goes, the roof rack is the best location for an exterior
mounted spare for the RR.

Subject: RR Exterior Spare Tire Mount?
I don't think this is a duplicate post...sorry in advance if it is! Does
anyone know of an exterior, rear mounted, spare tire carrier for the RR?
I'd really like to have that extra room inside. Has anyone modified a tire
carrier from a different vehicle?
Glad to have the digests back! Two weeks of solitude! ;-)

Good points, and I thought about both possibilties. You mention
your brain turning to applesauce - I noticed the same thing! Plus, all my
energy seemed to drain away. I guess that's stress for you. My biggest
concern with trying to bury an anchor or pound some posts into the soil was
how wet and difficult the soil was to work with and the fact that my axe was
pretty light for pounding in stakes. Plus the limits of time (it was
getting toward evening) and my own endurance. Imagine doing stuff like this
20 hours a day during the camel trophy! Also, I learned that fatigue is a
great antidote for embarrasment.

]Date: 16 May 1996 11:58:54 -0400 From: "Bill Skidmore" <skidmore@mitre.org> Subject: Re(2): Toyota Saves the Day! The technique that Bob talks about is to use a "dead-man". Basically, = you'd take that log that you chopped up, bury it at least 3ft down (the = deeper the better, but uncovered), dig a trench from the middle of the = log toward your truck on an incline, so that the winch cable can go = directly to the log, rather than over the surface and over the edge of = the log's trench, thereby possibly causing the log to lift out of the = trench. The second method is that of another type of deadman, but the rope/cable = between each stake should be taut and run from the base of the one = nearest to your truck to the top of the one next farthest away, and so = on. These stakes also should be hammered into the soil over a foot down, = as anything else will work free. Course: Basic Field Expedients 101, offered by US Army! Bill ------ From: Robert Watson (CNA), Wed, May 15, 1996 ------ Quite a story. Confirming, once again, one of Murphy's laws which states: "the nearest winch anchor is always cable length + 10'" I don't know if you thought about it at the time, I know my brain turns to applesauce when I get stuck and become helpless, but if you are digging and cutting anyway, you can use a tree (such as the one you pulled out) or even the spare tire as an anchor by burying it in the ground. More work than a "pull-pal", but less embarrasing than being rescued by a toyota :-). Another trick is to pound/bury several tree branch sized stakes in a row and connect them with a rope, tow-strap or cable, anchoring the winch cable to the one closest to the vehicle. If all that fails, then it's time to inflate the pontoons. Happy trails Bill Skidmore Senior Network Systems Engineer The Mitre Corp. 145 Wyckoff Rd. The torque specs for the Range Rover (and I would guess the Disco) is 95 ft. lbs. If you were "jumping up and down on the lug wrench" I bet yours were 150 ft. lbs. +. Land Rover also recommends coating the mounting face with anti-seize compound and putting a drop of oil on each wheel stud. >Well, the Disco lug nut is a 27mm hex. Sears "Craftsman" >does not MAKE a 27mm socket. Neither does Stanley. I went out in to the garage and looked in my Craftsman roll-a-way, and sure enough there was a Craftsman 27mm socket (it's what I use to get the RR wheels off). I looked in my Craftsman catalog to see if they still make it: 27mm 1/2 inch drive 12 point catalog # 44243 $5.99 and 27mm Deep Depth 1/2 inch drive 12 point catalog # 44449 $6.99. BTW the Sears Catalog # is 800-377-7414. >Fortunately, Snap-On Tools does make a 27mm socket- regular, >deep, or impact, take your choice. Snap-On also makes a >30" extra-long breaker bar. This is a *much* nicer way to >do wheel work on a Disco, though the total ($97) is right >up there. The Craftsman large breaker bar is only 18" long and I have never had any problem getting Range Rover lug nuts off. The total cost for the Craftsman breaker bar and socket is $25.65 (about 25% of the cost of the Snap On). If you ever need more leverage you can slip a steel pipe over the end of the breaker bar. I have had a 6' pipe on the end of my breaker bar to get a big 36mm rusted nut off the rear axle of a VW. Another reason I like Craftsman is that if I ever do something like putting a 20 foot pipe on the end of a breaker bar and it explodes, I can just run down Sears on a Sunday afternoon and they will hand me a new one. Sean,
That's a weird one! I haven't had any problems with the brake other than
some slight shuddering when coasting to a stop. I adjusted the pads and all
was fine. Maybe the cable is not tensioned correctly?
Cheers,

I haven't heard anything from LR or my dealer as yet but would like any information available. I think there was something about the clutch plate? The timing gear? Changing the splash gear for the transfer? Could someone please repost this info. Are there any recall numbers for these problems? How did you find out? The torque specs for the Range Rover (and I would guess the Disco) is 95 ft. lbs. If you were "jumping up and down on the lug wrench" I bet yours were 150 ft. lbs. +. Land Rover also recommends coating the mounting face with anti-seize compound and putting a drop of oil on each wheel stud. My point exactly. The weiner who last tightened the bolts went way overboard. (I mass 200 "on the nose", so it was probably well in excess of 200 ft-lbs - I didn't measure it). That's great, but the 'droid at the Cambridgeside Galleria in Cambridge, MA (just a short walk from work) didn't seem to be able to find 27mm, neither 12 nor 6 point. The 28mm/12pt and the 24mm/12pt were both around $13 each... he could find those. (and my complaints about the Sears mail order delivery promptness don't really belong here) I'm sorry- I guess I should have made it clearer that what I wanted was a 27mm 6-point socket. It was moot when they couldn't give me a pointer to a 27mm *anything* socket. Another reason I like Craftsman is that if I ever do something like putting a 20 foot pipe on the end of a breaker bar and it explodes, I can just run down Sears on a Sunday afternoon and they will hand me a new one. Snap-On is even niftier - call their 800 number and _they_ will drive their truck by and _deliver_ you another one. :-) -Bill Y. ------------------------------[ <- Message 18 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960517 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Considering a Disco
After reading this list for the past few months, added to a beforehand
interest in LRs, I've decided to look into purchasing a new Disco. Since
most of the people who post to the list are from the US or UK, my major
concern is about my geographic location, which is Canada. I've visited the
LR Web page, but how many dealers handle LRs in the Metro Toronto area? Can
you reccommend any of them? Are there any retailers around who carry LR
parts? Also, is there anyone in Metro who will rent a Disco? I'd like to
try one for a week so I can decide if it's what I really want. Perhaps the
most important question, anyone in Canada will agree, is how good are these
things in the snow? In Canada we get 10 months of winter and 2 months of
bad skating... :-) Thanks!

Any idea >what's happening here? Does it happen to anyone else? Hi Sean, All I know is that dealers, during the vehicle prep, have a bad tendency to over tighten the E brake adjustment. From what I've learned, the brake handle should have approx. 3-4 "clicks" of play (1/2" to 3/4") before break engagement (provided the drum pads are in relatively good shape). It sounds like there is some thermal metal expansion in the drum, which could cause enough to engage the pads, hence the "movement" of the handle. Vehicle Description: Multi-purpose 4.0SE passenger vehicles.
Description of Defect: The idler pulley, part of the engine
front end serpentine belt system, can fail resulting in
serpentine belt damage or disengagement.
Consequence of Defect: Disengagement of the pulley on the
roadway can cause harm to pedestrians and other vehicles. Also,
failure of the belt causes a loss of power steering assist which
can increase the potential for an accident.
Corrective Action: Dealers will replace the idler pulley with a
newly designed idler pulley.
Note: While power steering assist will be lost if the belt
fails, manual steering control remains. Note: Owners who take
their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service

Number of Vehicles: 2,114
Recall Number: 95V123000
System: Hydraulic brake hose.
Vehicle Description: Multi-purpose passenger vehicles.
Description of Defect: A flexible brake hose that connects the hydraulic
pump to the anti-lock brake system (ABS) valve block assembly can leak and
cause loss of brake fluid.
Consequence of Defect: Loss of brake fluid can make the primary brake
circuit inoperable, including the rear brakes, and loss of ABS operation
with a consequent reduction in braking performance and possible increased
braking distances. Also, brake fluid leakage in the engine compartment
could cause a fire if there is a source of ignition.
Corrective Action: Dealers will inspect the vehicles to determine which
ones are fitted with the suspect hose and then replace suspect hoses with
the latest design.
Note: Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed
upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable
time should contact Range Rover at 1-301-731-9040.

Recall No.: 95V099000
System: Axle assembly.
Vehicle Description: Multipurpose vehicles.
Description of Defect: At port of entry, a quality overcheck of the
differential pinion shaft torque was performed. This check required the
removal of the driveshafts. When the driveshafts were reinstalled, the
wrong sized nuts were used.
Consequence of Defect: The nuts can loosen, ultimately causing one or
both driveshafts to disconnect, resulting in loss of control of the
vehicle.

When things come to slurping halt and I'm up to the axles, miles from
anywhere, with the kids, who have no patience for such delays, I start
imaging all kinds of horrible things:
what if I can't get it out, or get it out before dark
what if I broke something or worse, broke something expensive (what's
my wife going to say?! :-)
what if bigfoot happens by while I'm stuck (and I'm out of film!) (this
is a real concern here in then pacific northwest ! :-)
what if, what if, what if.....
Never mind the fact that I bring enough food, shelter and supplies for a
trip twice as long as the one planned and usually have enough recovery
gear to make some if not sufficient headway (though I still need to get
a winch). I really need to work on the "panic reflex" so I can think
clearly and creatively enough to use what's at hand and solve the
problem at hand (sort of the Camel Trophy credo, I suppose)

I noticed that the CT Disco has a Big Ax securely fastened to the roof
rack. I guess that's something else to add to the load.

Yeah, and in a tropical jungle with blood-sucking, disease carrying
insects buzzing hungrily about your body. Some kind of fun, eh?!
I've noticed that trying to rush a recovery effort, in order to beat
some deadline or another (e.g. nightfall) only makes things worse (i.e.
longer). Of course that's easier to say than do (especially with the
kids whining about being tired and hungry, etc.)

And it makes me appreciate the comforts of the plushmobile that much
more on the way home :-)

I bought a lug wrench last week to fit the Rover. The size is 1 and 1/16" (which coincides exactly with 27mm). I called the dealer in Boise and Atlantic British. Both gave me a dimension of 1 and 1/16" (not 27mm). I found the lug wrench at a local auto parts store (NAPA?). I tried both Checker and Champion with no success before finding one with the 1&1/16". It was the largest lug on the set (star wrench). What was left of the lug wrench from LR only bent further when used with a cheeter (sp?) bar. I was surprised at how wimpy it was considering the size of the lug nuts. As far as gluing a light pipe in place, I believe that it is probably okay as long as a glue is used that is compatible with the pipe itself. I will be checking with co-workers who deal with fiber optic cable on a daily basis to see if and what kind of glue is compatible with fiber optic cable. Subject: Tires Pressure
Hello everybody,
I'm so surprised that my 2 following questions doesn't interest
anyone at LRO ! Perharps I would have more chance with RRO !!!
Here They are two questions for specialists :
1) Can anyone explain me if there is a good reason or not to put
larger tires than one's provided by default. For example,
putting some 235/..R16 in place of 205/80R16...
2) I read in a French 4X4 magazine that tires pressure
recommanded by constructors are always minimized and must be
increased by at least 1,25%. Is this affirmation true ?
Then, do I have to continue using following pressures for my
Disco (205/80R16 BFG Radial Long Trail T/A) :
FRONT Wheels 1,9 Bars
REAR Wheels 2,6 Bars
(Sorry but I don't have Lbs values)
Thanks for the input.
Cordialy.

The diameter of 205/80R16 is: (205*0.8*2)+(16*25,4) =3D 734,4 mm ref.
The diameter of 235/60R16 is: (235*0.6*2)+(16*25.4) =3D 688,4 mm -46 =

The diameter of 235/70R16 is: (235*0.7*2)+(16*25,4) =3D 735,4 mm + 1 =

The diameter of 235/80R16 is: (235*0.8*2)+(16*25.4) =3D 782,4 mm +48 =
mm
As You see, the profile (value after the slash) are important for the =
diameter of the tire.
If You use the 205/80R16 as reference, You can see the difference on the =
diameter, the radius will give half that value.
Change to 235/60 profile gives You 23mm less ground clearance
Change to 235/80 profile gives You 24mm more ground clearance
Wider tires, change 205 to 235 gives You 30 mm wider footprint, and =
therefore also less weight pr square unit. If You go on soft ground You =
will not sink so deep, BUT the lesser pressure on the will also give You =
lesser grip.
Whatever You make it will be a compromise, You have to decide Your =
needs.
My advise: Rocky ground, go for the largest ground clearance.
Soft flat area, go for the large footprint.
Wet grass, small footprint, to press the tires down to =
get grip.
All round use ?? Land-Rover made their best to find a compromise that =
suits most people.

That's what I've been using for years. I bought a deep socket and a flex head ratchet. I can loosen it with the ratchet ( I never tighten the nuts more than 90ft/lbs) flip the handle back, and spin the nut off as quick as using a four way lug wrench. The deep socket lets the ratchet clear the hub and wheel rim. The spoiler mounts to the steel bumper with around six bolts that
are easily removed and some screws that connect the spoiler to the bumper
caps. All told its maybe a ten minute job to remove, perhaps more to
replace since you have to fuss with lining up the holes etc. The problem is
that the bumper end caps hang down to the same level as the spoiler. Since
removing the bumper end caps requires one to disconnect the amber running
lights on the side of the bumper caps and would leave the vehicle looking
prtty rough, my solution (learned from the list) was to take a hack saw and
cut the bumper end caps to about the same level as the bumper. The plastic
cuts easily and there is even a bit of a lip you can use to guide the saw.
Of course, this means that you can't really put the spoiler back on. It
looks a little strange at first but you get used to it right away and really
what is the point of all that plastic anyway?

Wow. Now that's stress! I can only try to imagine my wife, 2 and
half year old and 8 month old along while Daddy tries to get the truck
unstuck. Sure, if I hooked the winch to a tree in masterful fashion and
deftly hauled the truck from the mire with the occupants aboard, beaming
with pride in their father's handiness that might be one thing. But reality
is far different!
