Subject: Stupid Oil Question

I have a stupid oil question, Does oil go bad? I was looking for something
in my parents basement and I found a full case of Castrol GTX 10/40 that I
think is about 10-15 years old (It was in the plastic bottles, not the
cardboard cans). Does anyone know if this is still OK to use?

Kevin,
Actually its a good question - same thing happened to me. You had
probably toss the oil (actually take it down to be recycled) and not
use it in your car. Although the oil itself does not break down over
time, some of the additives might. But the real reason is that
contaminates have in all likelyhood migrated through the plastic into
the oil: water, etc, and putting tose into your car is a bad idead

I forgot to mention, we've been talking with Harold Pietschmann, two time
Camel Trophy driver and owner/operator of The Adventure Company. Basically,
he takes people into Mexico and on U.S. trails for 10 day adventure trips.
He also trains Special Op units in winching techniques etc. for the military.

At any rate, we may be able to work somthing out with Harold so he joins us
on the Rubicon. . Might be real nice to have him along. He says he can
almost guarantee all will make it through unscathed.

Rove on!!

Subject: Disco FL to AK

Hi folks,
I've been reading the list for some time and thought I would post
my experiences with my new Epson Green 1996 SD Disco. I was originally
supposed to pick the car up in Atlanta GA but they had problems getting it
in on time so, since I already had plane tickets into ATl, they gave me a
1996 Cadilac to use until they recieved the Disco. I drove to Tallahassee
Fl and they delivered the Dico to me a week latter. By the time I got it
it had 304 miles on it, I then put another 200 miles on the odometer and
then purchased a 6'x12' trailer to tow to AK. Before I left town I had my
first problem with the left door lock which wouldn't operate correctly.
Since we were stoping in SC visit my bother-in-law I figured I would stop
by the Jacksonville dealership to have it looked at. On 29 April, I loaded
up the wife and two sons and we head for Jacksonville. I called and let
them know I was coming, and upon arrival they immediately fixed the
problem. The clip on the doorlock rod either came off or was missing from
the factory. They installed a new one and ajusted it in just a couple of
minutes. We then head for SC and then onto Ohio. In OH I bought 500 board
feet of Red Oak lumber for making furniture. I figured this would be a
good time to changed the oil at 1900 miles. After a two day visit with
family we head west for a stop at Mt Rushmore, Badlands, and then
Yellowstone. No problems execept for a blown running light fuse, which Im
sure was caused by the extra draw of the numerous running lights on the
trailer. I replaced the 10amp with a 15amp and that fixed the problem.
Which reminds me, I need to go put the 10amp back in. After yellow stone,
we headed for Canada and stopped for a couple days in Edmonton to take the
kids to the West Edmonton Mall. A mall with an in door waterpark,
amusement park with a killer roller coaster ride, and sea life amusement
park. While we were there I took the disco into the dealership for its
first service check. It had 5100 miles on it and we still had 2000 miles
to go. Since I like to change the oil around the 3000 mile point I figured
this would be a good time to have the serive check done also. We left
Edmonton and head for the Alcan Highway. The Alcan highway was good until
we left Haines Junction and not to long after that it becomes very rough
dirt road for about 150 miles. When you cross into Ak you would think the
road would become better but I think that part of the highway was the
worst. Our trip ended in Fairbanks on the 15 May.
Upon arrival I had the trailer weighed which came to a gross weight
of 4740lbs. Our average gas mileage was 10.4mpg with a standard deviation
of 1.24mpg. The best mpg was 15.5mpg which was when I unhooked the trailer
and drove around in Yellowstone. The worst was 8.3mpg. I ran every thing
from 93 to 87 octane and it didn't seem to make any difference on the fuel
economy or performance. I tried to run premium as often as possibe but
when all you have to choose from is regular unleaded, which is the case at
many pumps along the Alcan, there's not much you can do.

How did the Disco do pulling 4740lbs along the trip? I would say
its not the king of towing, but it did rather well. The Disco was able to
pull the load very well in 4th and on long flat and down hill areas 5th
was no problem either. If there was a heavy head wind, you could forget
5th gear. Going up the mountains there were only a couple times were 2nd
gear was needed and the rest where easy climbed with 3rd. 4th gear took
care of most rolling hills.

The total cost for the Disco was $36,603.86. This includes $30,075
for the SD, 6,430.86 in options, $95 Tag & Title fee, and $3 GA warrenty
rights fee.
The options included the winch, bike rack, ski rake, stainless running
boards, rubber mats, CD player, winter wiper blades, waterproof seat
covers, low side rigid cargo protector, hitch kit, hitch wiring kit, front
headlamp guards, rear lamp guards and rear bumper lamp guards.

So far Im very pleased with the Disco and have already been
exploring the trails. There is one thing that is concerning me at the
moment that maybe someone could shed some light on. When I have applied
the brakes hard and activated the ABS system, there is a loud bang which
sounds like metal to metal and then you hear the clicking and feel the
pulsating of the brake pedal. The manual says you will here the clicking
but what about the banging I'm hearing on intial activation? Has anyone
else heard these sounds?

Well I quess I've rattled on enough but if there is anything anyone
would like to know about the trip feel free to ask.

I quess the correct salutation from now on would be,

Cheers,
Mel

on the RRs is there an extra place in the cooling system to mount a manual
aftermarket water temp guage? You could just mount it under the hood, not
bring it into the cabin, and verify your OEM readings with the underhood
unit. At least this would give you security knowing the engine isn't blowing
up.

can one also camp in ones vehicle somewhere....I have a particular

comfy, or my tent/thermarest....
This is all speculation, don't know if I can go, but would like
to, and I love the Mountain biking around Crested Butte. Maybe I could
work up a nice rock climbing/mountain biking/photography/ LR fun vacation...

Subject: Fuel Tank Replaced/LRMW Service

Went down to Boston this past Friday to have the fuel tank replaced in
my '87 RR under the recall. Got to see the old tank(I wanted to see what
the frame looked like underneath) and told them I wanted the old fuel pump
as a spare. The fuel pump was thoroughly corroded to the top of the old
tank and one of the tubes leading into it(or out of it!) was just about
corroded to the point of breaking! The mechanic told me that the current
tank in the truck was obviously not the original and that RR's have been
notorious for having corroding of the tank over the past 8 years or so. He
seemed relieved that LR is replacing the tanks with ones that won't
corrode! I guess I would be too after 8 years of tank replacements when a
simple redesign would eliminate the trouble altogether!
I also patronize LRMW in Natick MA. They are the nearest LR dealer
to us(roughly 4.5 hour drive-I did it in 4 on Friday! Once the 3.5L is up
to speed, it's not bad!). Maine will soon have it's own dealer(about a 2
hour drive!), and although encouraging from a driving-time standpoint, I'm
leary of the quality of the service that will be offered there due to the
fact that the mechanics will be newly trained(I'm assuming!) and not as
seasoned as the LRMW staff.
My wife and I bought a '95 Discovery from LRMW, sold by Jim
Pappas...I then bought my 1987 RR sight unseen via Jim and LRMW. Jim new I
was looking at getting my own modern(yet used!) Rover and called me when he
saw it come in(the Disco is my wife's-the under restoration IIA is mine!).
When I took delivery of the truck, I pulled the floor mats up front and
found that I could view pavement through the gaping, corroded wound where a
once healthy floor-board existed! I called Jim, he said "Damn"(or
something to that effect, and I was told to get estimates on repair and
choose the repair shop locally I wanted to use and get it fixed. The check
and apologies from LRMW were prompt and accepted! :-)
This brings me to my most recent service. Although it was a Friday
afternoon, John, a service rep. allowed me to add a couple of nit-picky
complaints to the afternoon's work list without furrowed brow at all! I
asked to go look at the truck in the service area, and John escorted me out
and he and I and the mechanic looked her over and he told me all about the
tank problems. I showed them the suspension mods I had made and told them
of further dream modifications...they seemed genuinely interested and
encouraging! :-) The service took longer than estimated(5 hours vs.
estimated 3). During that time, I had some coffee, watched a video on a
Freon recovery unit with a service fellow(didn't get a bit of it!) and kept
adding things in the clothing section to my bill(a tie for me and a T-shirt
for my 3 year old..he honestly knows the difference(visually) between a
Jeep and a Land Rover! He makes me proud every day! ;-)). The bill was
zero for the recall(I had brought my own pump and filter) and zero for
fixing the small additions to my list!
I was offered a bunch of flowers to take home to my wife, but
declined as I would be spending the overnight(or so I thought!) in Boston.
The nice lady who took my money said she'd give me two bunches next time!
The car was washed and brought 'round(after no small delay) and I drove
unhappily onto to the MA roadways for more Mad Max style action! As I
waited for my truck to come from its bath, I watched as a well-dressed
elderly couple were gushing over a new 4.0 RR(can you blame them!?). It
was really nice to see smiles on their faces as the air suspension went up
and down and they fiddled with the controls! It also hit home to me that
that vehicle(if purchased by them) would probably never see any use harsher
than grass parking at an outdoor summer concert and that this was to be one
of those Rovers that maybe you or I could someday afford. What a food
chain! ;-)
I ended up visiting with friends and started out for home after my
wife said she thought our second, near due child might decide to emerge! I
made it half-way to Portland, and had to sleep! I couldn't focus on the
road and figured that I should delay and get home in one piece! Needless
to say, I am home now, baby still hasn't shown him/herself and I'm bushed.
With nearly 650 new miles on the RR just for the service, little sleep, and
the nervous anticipation of the new baby, I'm BUSHED! :-)
I have to say that I think that the RR runs quieter with the new
tank/fuel pump and power seems more linear with gas peddle travel! ;-) I
have nothing but good things to say about LRMW and their staff! Some of
their customers really are quite different in spirit and sense of community
than most on this list. I witnessed the staff harrassed by exec-types with
briefcases and cell phones demanding their car "NOW!" I feel sorry for
them as they could have been spending their time perusing the cars on the
lot, watching the LR videos on the big-screen TV, or checking out the
accessories for sale. I hope they at least pay for regular servicing so
that these vehicles are in good shape when they come into our possession!
;-) I would highly recommend Jim and the staff at LRMW for any service
need you might have if you live around Boston or are just travelling
through(they just openend a new centre in Peabody MA)! Jim is an
enthusiast first(as witnessed by his vehicle list!) and dealing with a
salesman who knows I don't need to be sold is a rare pleasure! Instead we
talk about future modifications, gatherings, and purchases(good thing our
wives are out of earshot!). Jim even showed me a promotional brochure on
the LR Special Operations Vehicle-man, that thing is cool! Bristling with
machine guns and mounts on the body for H+K sub-machine guns, extreme heavy
duty bumpers with tow rings to spare, and that always classic olive drab
paint treatment! Now, we just have to figure out how to modify Jim's 109"
into one! ;-)

Sorry for the bandwith, but this makes up for my lack of frequent posts(and
then some!)!

Cheers! John

Does anyone know if 3.5 heads were initially produced with non-hardened
valves (i.e. for leaded gas)? I'm going to build up a 215/300/3.5 hybrid and
thought I'd investigate the Rover valve history a bit, as used heads seem to
be available for less than new valves and seats. Is this because they might
be for leaded gas, and would themselves need that work? If that's the case,
does anyone know the 'build' date or engine/head number to help identify when
the change took place? Thought I'd ask here, as it's cheaper than a phone
call to the UK...
