Subject: Internet Rover Withdrawl

The following message is a re-post, it seems it was lost somewhere when the
lists went down for a few days. My apologies to anyone who already recieved it:

Hello all! It seems that the lists have slowed down quite a bit these days.
Probably everyone coming out of hibernation with the weather slowly improving in
the northern hemisphere.

If you happen to be suffering from Internet Rover withdrawl, I have a small
solution. I am pleased to announce that I'm now in the Land Rover business. I
won't waste mailer bandwidth by selling myself, I'll just say that our URL is as
follows: http://www.OverlandMotors.com If you don't have graphical web access,
send me some e-mail and I'll tell you all about it.

I announce this at the great risk of being flamed. I would only like to say
that the only commericial use I'm putting this list to (beyond this beginning
post) is to add a short sig file to my mail....I hope not to annoy anyone
further. If you would like to recieve commercial plugs via e-mail, let me know
and I'll put you on our list.

Regards,
Eric Zipkin

Subject: Congrats!

Way to go on the new rover enthusiast!

how about this for a name:

           ----- Lucas!

hahaha! just kidding....

In other Rover news, I finally got the top of My D90! Oh the joy!
Yes, it finally got above 65 here in minnesota, and it actually
stopped raining for a couple days, so the top came off last Thursday
(it hasn't been put back on yet... I just ordered a surrey top which
should arrive tomorrow...). And, the windows, which I've waffled on
and put in and taken out several times, came out for good on
Wednesday night, right before a big storm. I found out first-hand how
much water comes in during severe weather without windows....
although I had a grin on my face so big I couldn't help but swallow
some rain by accident.

But, alas, the morning after I got it back from the dealer last
Monday, right as I was pulling into my parking spot at work, the old
"Check Engine light" came on. Nothing serious, but it's back in the
shop this morning for it's diagnostic.

Last time it was in the shop for a bunch of little fixes, which they
seemed genuinely excited about doing (a first at the dealer I take it
too... the first time they weren't too excited to help me as I didn't
buy it there).
Anyway, they even did some EXTRA things, like re-machined the
camshaft. I guess they are doing this on a "as they come in" basis,
as the camshaft is a bit too long and will start to slap a little,
creating some engine knock (at least that's how they explained it to
me). So they fixed that, along with my laundry list of other
non-essential but annoying things.

Anyone else had this camshaft fix, or even noticed a problem?

Rover on, young one! Rover like the wind!

So far it appears I may avoided damage. Thanks to all who responded,
especially with suggestions regarding blown head gaskets and warped
heads. I'm going to check the compression to make sure, but so far it
looks o.k.

Question: The EFI dash light came on just as I shut down when the engine
began to overheat. Did I burn up an oxygen sensor? What does running
with a bad O2 sensor do to performance? What all does the EFI light
diagnose?

Subject: Re: overheating incident

     Shaun,

on the 87 and 88 RRs the EFI light comes on when the ECU detects a
fault with one of the following:

     1. O2 sensors
     2. Coolant sensor
     3. Air Flow meter
     4. Throttle potentiometer

Since your engine did actually overheat the odds are the ECU detected
this via the coolant sensor. The EFI light needs to be reset before it
will stay off - do this by disconnecting one of the battery cables for
a few seconds. When you reconnect, the light should stay off unless
there is a hard problem related to one of the above sensors.

Glad to hear that there are no signs of permanent damage. You may want
to change the oil in the engine since this may have been affected by
     the overheating also.

     Regards
     Mike Lenaghan

Yeah, it's tough communicating on entirely different levels. Next will
be: What's a locker? What's an Optima battery? What's that roll of wire
thingie doing on the front? Why do the tires look so funny? How did all
those little scratches get all over it? What kind of bumper is that in
the front? Did it come like that from the factory? What's that big "tube
thing" going around the windshield and all over the back? Why isn't there
carpeting? Where's the radio again? Why did you add those big lights,
didn't the headlights work well enough?

Followed by: Does the top leak? What problems have you had with it? Why
does it drip on the driveway? What kind of gas milage does it get? Does
it have power door locks? What, no power windows? Do they come in
automatics? Does the air conditioning work well? Why is it so noisy
while driving 60 mph?

And finally, the ultimate insult: Is that a "Toyota?" AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

Then you can tell them "Yeah... that's it, it's a... (gulp) Toyota,
yeah, that's what it is, a special limited edition "Toyota-Land Rover"
which would normally sell for $42,000 but for you only, I'll sell it for
only $36,000, but I have this other guy who is interested, and is
going to be calling me back Tomorrow afternoon, and..."

I always get this:

Person: "Range Rover, ohhh, those are nice. Now who makes that,
Toyota or Nissan?"
Me: "Land Rover"
Person: "Yea, but who makes it, GM, Ford, who?" . . .

I usually don't quit until I have fully explained LR history and the camel
trophy.

My title, copied from the PO's Georgia title, reads:
Make:RRover Model: SAL (SAL are the first 3 letters of my VIN)

So, tell me about the Optima battery.

Hey Barnett.

Where DOES one put the subwoofer and CD changer in the D90? I can't
imagine any location would be secure and sheltered enough.

I'm looking into proximity alarms for my vehicle now. With the soft top
off, I thought an alarm to keep honest people honest would be a good
idea. I've gotten quotes anywhere from $1000 to $1500 for the system
which includes a LoJack. Do you have any alarm advise?

*** VERY SORRY FOR THE CROSSPOSTING, BUT I MUST ***
*** SELL THIS VEHICLE IN THE NEXT FIVE DAYS ***

Unfortunately, the gentleman who was initially going to purchase this
vehicle wasn't able to come up with the money. That left me between a
rock and a hard place (not too bad in a Land Rover, but awful
financially!) and I have to sell this vehicle before I move down south.
Here are the details:

  110 County Station Wagon
  Model Year 1984
  3.5 litre V8 Petrol
  85,000 Miles
  Blue Exterior, Brown Cloth Interior

The vehicle is in very good condition throughout -- chassis is
rust-free, as is the body. Interior is clean, everything on the vehicle
works as it should.

Tax/MOT run out at the end of the month. I ran it through its MOT, and
the only thing its needing is a new rear silencer (I have a copy of the
report). I will either take this into account when negotiating a price,
or I will sell it with 12-months of MOT as a condition of sale with a
deposit. We can negotiate tax.

If you want an independent opinion of the vehicle, I can give you the
names of other list members who have seen/inspected the vehicle.

I'm flexible as to what I'll take in price. I have seen these advertised
privately in the back of LR Magazines for #4500-5000. Offer me 60% of
that and chances are I'll take it. The first realistic offer secures the
vehicle. (NB: The #1500 that a used-car dealer offered me site-unseen was
NOT reasonable)

Please call me ASAP on 01334 472669 (tell whoever answers its concerning
the Land Rover) or e-mail me at this address. Thanks very much, sorry
about all of the wasted bandwidth.

Dear Andrew:
When I got my '94 D90 2 1/2 years ago, I had an Alpine alarm installed
which includes: front door and hood switches as well as an ignition
interrupt if alarm is tripped. It also has an interior sensor which sets
off alarm if motion is detected in the front seat area (I believe that a
second sensor would be necessary to cover the rear seat and load space
area.) It also has a "perimeter sensor" that can be turned on or off that
gives a "warning chirp" if unusual motion is detected outside but close to
the vehicle. [this is supposed to "warn" somebody who might be casing the
vehicle - but can be turned off by the owner if LR is parked in a busy
area where passers-by might upset the sensor].
The system seems to work well. Heavy rain with no top on will set off the
interior alarm :-) . Installed cost was $400-500 at that time.
When I park in areas where I am concerned about security, I also use a
"kryptonite" steering wheel-to-brake pedal lock: although it is easy to
defeat by cutting the steering wheel, it is a visible deterrent --- so
far.
I don't have any info about LoJack.

Best wishes,
David Rosenbaum

Subject: Engine Knock/Camshaft

In regards to the questions about my recent D90 camshaft
re-machining, they really didn't go too in depth when I asked. I
could, next time I'm at the shop (next week sounds about right, I
just picked it back up today! heh heh) and see if they know, but it
sounded like a general thing for (I think!) '95's. LR issued no
formal recall or anything, I guess just updated shops and told them
to do them on an "as they (D90's) come in basis..."

As to the problem with my Check Engine light, apparently some fuel
thingy somewhere was sending a bad signal (it was either gettting too
much h2-o or not enough, even the shop steward wasn't sure after the
mechanic explained it...). No big deal, just made the idling throttle
run a little high.
(good thing, as I had driven about 800 miles since the little bugger
of a light turned on).

as for poor John and the sale of his "2-door convertible like" J##p,
I think everyone must get some responses similar to that. A typical
situation:

Them: What kind of J##p is that?

ME: (usually irately) It is NOT a J##P!

them: What is it then?

ME: It's a Land Rover

Them: Oh, a range rover. How can you afford one of those? (apparenlty
they are only familiar with the luxury, LWB Country ed. Rangie that
tops out who knows where...)

ME: It's not a RANGE Rover, it's a LAND rover. They are made by the
same company, LAND Rover. Land rover makes Range rovers.

Them: Oh, A toyota Land rover! (sometimes they say land-cruiser, but
usually not).

ME: No, a L.A.N.D. Rover. Made in England. You know, princess di,
james bond, etc.?

Them: Oh ...(not a semblance of understanding, as they walk away)
cute jeep.

oh well. some people just don't get it.

Bob K.
'95 D90 Land-J##P-Toyota-Wagoneer-Cruiser-Range-Rover.
I end up just calling it a truck (that way there is less chance of
them calling it a J##P).

I've heard this question already, but from my *dealer*: "Well, I don't mean
to talk down your truck, but there sure are a lot of scratches for a new
one!" This from one of the service writers. Perhaps the fact that they're a
Cadillac dealer as well had something to do with it - ick.

One of my coworkers complimented me on my new black Explorer.

Someone else, when I mentioned I needed body work (I had recently discovered
that aluminum and granite don't mix), recommended a Land Rover "expert" she
knew. "He works on them all the time," she insisted. "He's rebuilt lots of
Land Cruisers!" I thanked her politely.

Yes, I got the OME heavy duty springs. The rears are a progressive
springs, ranging from 260 lbs/in to 300 lbs/in (going from memory) and
the front is something like 230 lbs/in (again, from memory.) I went with
the HD springs to gain the most lift possible, so I could add the
tallest tires possible. Stock rear is something like 160 #/in. The OME
catalog states the HD springs as to be used with a constant 200kg of
additional weight. (440lbs)

As for liking them... I do, but there are trade-offs. Ride quality is
definitely changed, *much* stiffer, but then I *never* bottom out
anymore, and I've had the RR airborne! (Did I mention that I tend to
drive it *hard*?) The medium duty are about 1/2 inch shorter (rear), and
ride better. I usually have a good deal of weight (people, tools,
"junk", etc...) when 4-wheeling, which helps the ride.

Still, though, the CD player rarely skips around town, but is unusable
off road. I don't notice any difference in the road noise. But, since I
don't have swaybars, it has helped *tremendously* in cornering. I get
almost no body roll now around turns, even at a good rate of speed. (My
CD changer is not factory though, it was added by me.)

As I said, trade-offs.... Even though this is my primary transportation,
I was (am) more interested in off road worthiness than comfort.
Truthfully, though, without the added weight, I think I went too stiff,
and may have actually lost a bit of articulation when compared to the
medium duty springs. (IE: Wheel in the air, and spring not against the
bump stop on the opposite side.)

Oh! And if you ever see my RR for sale by me, forget all that stuff
about it being airborne, and rode hard, I never take it off road, really!
;-)

Without going too radical, or suffering on ride quality, I'd say to go with
the medium duty springs.

I notice you've got the heavy duty OME springs on your Range Rover. What
do you think of them? I'm looking for some improved offroad handling (I
like the thought of a 1" lift), but it's still my to-and-from-work-plushie,

I have had a re-appearing check engine light. It's come on twice for me. It supposedly
comes on due either to a fuel injection problem (immediately apparent in engine
performance) or an emmissions-type problem involving the purge valve on the charcoal
cannister. The charcoal cannister is located in the front right wing (outboard of and to
the front of the power steering fluid reservoir). The cannister has something to do with
fumes from the gas tank. Each time my light came on, I believe it was due to the
charcoal cannister, since I had no engine performance problems. When it came on I fooled
with the cannister some--partially removed it, pulled out purge valve, unplugged and
reconnected the electrical connection. The light went off and all seemed fine.
Unfortunately, when I did this I also disconnected the battery (that's what the shop
manual said to do) which meant the ECM module reset. Thus, I really don't know whether
fooling with the cannister did anything that resetting the ECM module didn't do. When I
told my mechanic all this he didn't think the light was a big deal and said the next
time it comes on to swing by and he could see what the error code on the ECM said. Of
course, it hasn't come on since.

Let us know what your mechanic says.

I'm not sure with the 3.5, but on the 2.25 four banger, you *need* a
thermostat, or at least something to impede the flow. Running full bore,
the water path will "short circuit" through the intermediate hose, and
as a consequence, #4 cylinder doesn't get enough cooling and frys. If the
thermostat of a 2.25 *has* to be removed, substitute at metal disk with
three 3/16" holes drilled into it. Again, this may not apply to the V-8.

Subject: Disco:Which tyres wear fastest?
Date: Wed, 22 May 1996 12:16:19 +-200

The V8i Discovery I bought had tyres with different levels of wear on =
front and rear. I suspect this was due to the busted central diff. (I =
attach a copy of the jucy bit of a letter I wrote to the local LR agent =
where I bought the vehicle - to cover me, for your AMUSEMENT)

What I would really like to know now is:

Which set of tyres on the Discovery wear fastest, front or rear? =
Needless to say I would like to rotate the tyres such that all four =
reach the end of their usable life more or less at the same time.

Kind regards
Philip

COPY OF LETTER TO LOCAL LR AGENT:

I would like to express my concern about a problem that I think exists =
in the central diff. The symptom of the problem is as follows:
When I turn sharply left or right (but mostly left) the vehicle would =
occasionally, but fairly infrequently make a loud "clang" noise with an =
associated viscous jerk which feels like it is generated somewhere in =
the drive train. From within the car it is difficult to say where it =
comes from. This happened on the Monday evening of the day when I took =
delivery, about two times Tuesday to Friday and three times at =
Dullstroom when I turned of to take fuel. When I turned right at =
Dullstroom the car turned with such difficulty that even my wife noticed =
it without me saying anything.
By this time I was convinced that something was not right and was =
listening very closely to the sound from the drivetrain on the highway =
back to Pretoria. By now I was also suspecting the central diff because =
I could heard no regular knocking from any of the front universals. At =
times I thought I heard the car generate the kind of sound you would =
expect when driving a tarred road but with the diff lock engaged, but I =
am inexperienced with this vehicle and concede that it might have been =
road noise ...
On the way home I stopped at my father's house for tea and mentioned the =
above to him. We decided to do some investigation. Understanding the =
way normal differentials work we reasoned if front and central diff =
operate the way they should with diff lock disengaged, that it should =
be possible to turn one front wheel and turn it freely in both =
directions if the other three wheels were firm on the ground and with =
the main transmission in neutral(high range). We tested our theory by =
lifting the left front wheel and turned it forwards and backwards. (The =
wheel pointed straight forward.) It turned fairly smoothly in the =
forward direction but when I turned it backwards it would occasionally =
jerk but continue to turn and at other times it would just jerk to a =
dead stop. My dad and I agreed that this could not be normal.
We also reasoned that with diff lock engaged, that it should not be =
possible to turn the wheel. We tested this by engaging diff lock (the =
very first time this was done since getting the car), checking that the =
warning light came on, and by trying to turn the wheel. The wheel could =
now not be turned in either direction as we thought.
Having noted the emphasis and importance the owner's manual place on =
ensuring that the diff does not remain locked due to transmission =
wind-up, we checked that the warning switched off when disengaging the =
diff lock. I could also simulate the wind-up condition simply by =
keeping tension on the front wheel while my dad disengaged the diff =
lock. The diff lock warning light would remain on until I relaxed the =
front wheel when a click could be heard from somewhere from the =
transmission and the light would also turn off at the same time. At no =
time did I notice the diff lock warning light come on since taking =
delivery.
My suspicion is that the diff lock mechanism does not disengage fully =
(even though the light is off), causing gears in the center diff to =
occasionally catch "tooth to tooth" which in turn would cause the =
tremendous jerking and the locking in the "wheel turning experiment". =
End of extract.

As it was, one of the two shafts, on which the planetary gears run broke =
in TWO places thus resulting in a chunk of metal drifting around loosely =
in the central diff, locking and unlocking it as it wegded itself =
between the sun and planetary gears. LR replaced the transfer box under =
guarantee. Philip is now happy.

Subject: URGENT : Tires problem.

Hello everybody,

I recently put 4 new 'BFGoodrich Radial Long Trail T/A' tires
(205/80R16) on my Disco for better performances on the road. I
Would be happy but I have some problems that make me feel bad.
The first day I put them on my disco, I felt some vibrations on
the steering wheel, specially at 100 kph speed. I immediatly
asked the garage owner to check wheel's balance but he did'nt
see anything special. Today the problem persist and I've got a
new RDV this Saturday morning with the garage owner to check
again my tires.

Before, I had Michelin XM+S 244 tires(205/80R16), old (i.e. worn
) but very efficient and no vibration problems. Now, I have new
BFG Tires, efficient but with vibration problems.

My simple question is :

Is there any quality difference between the two ?

Is anybody have information or comment about quality of BFG
Tires manufacture compared with Michelin ?

Is there any incompatibility between BFG Tires and french road's
surfaces ?

Normally the front tyres are wearing faster than the rear on a car with =
permanent 4wheel drive. This is because they have approximately the same =
wear from pulling the vehicle, but all the force used to stir is wearing =
on the front only.
BTW, if You rotate the tyres, do it by exchange the front and back on =

Hi all,

D90 What is it?
John Purnell seems to be having a slight problem getting the average car

Same thing happens to me that others have already stated.
Them: Hey nice truck man!
Me: Thanks I love it! (All Smiles)
Them: Ya, That's really nice. Bet you could go just about anywhere in that
thing.
Me: Yep! WE HAVE gone just about anywhere, and the nice thing about the
Land Rover is when you're done havin' fun you can get back home too!
Them: Hey what year is this anyhow? You've done an excellent job restoring
it.
Me: It's new, a 1995.
Them: When did they start importing Toyota Land Crusiers again? Boy I want
one!
Me: it's a Land Rover! Ya know, England? African Safari's? Camel Trophy?
Them: Oh Range Rover you payed 60K for that?
Me: AAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!

CD Changer/Subwoofer install. (Doug and Andy).
The CD and subwoofer I got were the Clarion units sold by the dealer. I
wanted the factory units for several reasons; 1)I heard this setup in Jim
Pappas's D90 and it sounded good enough to me. (I have a major dollar hi-fi
in a room at home used solely for listening to music, one chair and the
hi-fi. That's where I do all of my critical listening). The car system is
just for fun and to overcome the noise on the road so I can hear the stereo
in the first place :>). 2) The factory install is easy, looks slick, and
offers some protection from the elements. 3) I get a 15% discount on any
(over the counter) items I buy from the dealer so the price was right.:>)

The CD changer holds 6 discs and is easy to operate because the radio/head
unit is already setup to control it. All of the buttons for the radio
double as CD controls. The changer mounts inside of a box that is made out
of the same plastic as the front door trim panels. It has a hinged top that
opens to give access to the changer when needed but when it's closed
protects the unit from rain, dirt, dust, etc. This box mounts to the back
of the cubby. It's easy to access while driving. The din cable runs under
the cubby to the radio.

The subwoofer has a built in amp. The unit attaches to the inside of the
rear tailgate using the mounting points for the spare tire carrier and has
a black plastic door trim shroud that covers the entire tailgate. The wire
harness runs thru the rubber convolute from the tailgate to behind the
right rear speaker, thru the cap rail at the top of the body, down the
safari cage, behind the cubby to the radio. You have to insert the plus and
minus woofer leads into one of the connectors, and splice into ACC and AMP
trigger connections at the back of the radio, that's it. The whole install
took me 3.5 hrs.

As far as rain goes...yesterday before I left work we had a major
thunderstorm, (lots of blowing wind and torrential downpours). I only had
the surrey top on. When I went out it was still raining light but steady.
The truck was totally drenched inside and I drove home in the rain. Later I
went out to dry it up a little. Almost everything was dry already, (except
my butt :>), the CD changer was totally dry inside it's box, and the sub is
weather resistant like the rest of the speakers. I turned the system on and
everything was fine. I won't be worrying about getting anything wet
anymore. Lets face it, when you think about it what's different about the
inside of a Defender than the outside? Answer nothing! So what if it gets
wet!

Alarms.
I don't have one yet. I live in western MASS. Things are not to bad out
here yet. I do want to get one though, and also install a battery
disconnect. Anyone have any alarm suggestions? Dave, what brand is the
alarm you described?

If anyone has any other questions, ask away.

P.S. RE: Jeff Gauvin (sweltering with the hardtop on) Get that hardtop off
man! Can't you see what fun you're missing getting drenched like the rest
of us! :>!

P.S.S. Andy, you're here somewhere close by? Want to try to get together?
Have a beer some time and talk Rovers? Maybe do some trail riding?

Cheers,
Barnett

Aw hell, not even my dealership got it right. In the letter sent out
thanking me for buying a Disco the vice president of the dealership wrote,
"I want to thank you for your recent purchase of a 1995 Range Rover
Discovery." That was the first sentence of the letter. The first sentence
of the next paragraph begins, "As a Range Rover owner..."

I will add that this dealership is one of the least loved in the San
Francisco Bay Area because of its seeming ambivalence to Land Rovers. There
are three others, and I can from first-hand experience say that two of them
are a joy to go to by comparison. The dealership in question also sells
Rolls Royce/Bentley and Jaguar. The service staff seems knowledgeable
enough to do maintenance and repairs; however, don't ask them about making
your Rover more off-road worthy, or ask them about accessories beyond how
much they cost.
