Please do, it'd be fun. And I vote for Full top with windows, or at least
surrey w/ windows and take the besstop with you (ya know, leave the passenger
behind)... it's a long enough drive where even if you don't like your
passengers, you'll have to talk at some point... and I think your best bet is
the whole top on.

Subject: LRNA D90 roof rack

Hi all,
Does anyone out there have the original LRNA Thule roof rack that attaches
to the front safari cage on soft top Defenders?

If so a couple of questions;

The accessories for the basic rack list a luggage basket, roof rack
extension kit, weekender box, load straps, luggage straps, quick straps.

1) - Is anyone familiar with these accessories?

2) - If so which one would better serve as a place to lash a shovel, Axe,
jackall, two jerry cans, cooler, camping gear, etc?

3) - How does the Thule mount to the cage and how does it lock?

4) - Is it easy to install and remove?

5) - Are you happy with the quality of the unit?

6) - Maximum load is 100 pounds, does this make the vehicle handle funny or
feel tippy?

7) - What was the cost?

I need some extra storage space for this stuff when I have a few family
members camping with me. With 3 adults and 2 kids the Defender is FULL.

I don't mind the idea of a roof rack as long as I try to keep the load as
light as I can, and it's EASILY removable so I can take it off when I don't
need it.

Is this why they make a 110? :>

Thanks,
Barnett

No need to panic. With the V8, it's indeed the other way 'round: Without
thermostat, the engine runs *too cool* and never reaches proper operating
temperature (which in turn will confuse the ECU just a little bit and result
in high fuel consumption).

You mean they are good for something other than making the Disco look
"macho"? That was my main reason for putting it on the rack! :-> I
figured that with the jack and shovel on the rack and me wearing my
"Camel Trophy" cap, I could simply intimidate the terrain into behaving
:-)

Seriously, on the front, I've reinforced the GP brush guard (so it
doesn't fold back onto the bonnet) and use that for the front. I
wouldn't trust it to go very high, but it's good enough to take the
weight of the tires/frame to get a shovel under it. On the back, I have
a WARN receiver shackle in the trailer hitch receiver that I use as the
rear jack (and tow) point. It's in the center, so it's not the best
location for lifting only one tire, but good enough.

I'd like to find or make a cradle for the tires that fits into the jack
so I could jack a tire up. With the Disco's extensive wheel travel, the
bumper has to darn near be in the stratosphere before the tire comes off
the ground far enough to get something under it. I figure I could use a
choke chain if I had to in a pinch in the mean time.

Cullen meaning "handsome," in Irish and Bejian being my wife's maiden

Just got some info on BFG truck tires, including the Trac Edge, from
BFG. It includes pictures, discriptions, available sizes and diminsions.
The Tracedges are described as a commercial traction tire to get you to
where the work is in your truck, van or SUV. It proclaims their ability in
mud, sand, gravel and snow. They have stud holes. It appears that
they do not have the "tri guard" sidewalls that the BFG AT and MT have.
The BFG phone rep. says that they are "lower grade commercial tires"
compared to the AT and MT. However, the tread appears to be a great
compromise between mud and all terrain. Wide gaps at the sides for
self cleaning, but tighter AT type tread in middle. My only concern is
how well they do on road: handling, wet traction, breaking, noise, etc.

The info on the 4X4 XPC and other Michelin tires should arrive soon. If
anyone wants to request their own info packets they can call
1-800-tirehelp. This is Michelin's number and they can connect you to
their BFG department if needed.

Print it out, put it in the glovebox. [I'm not sure if it's based

Gerald writes “How do I get the old sills off?”

Go buy a Discovery manual first! From the manual:

SILL FINISHER
Service repair no -76-76-05

Remove
	1. Remove the nut, bolt and washer securing the front of the sill finisher
to the wing [fender] support bracket.
	2. Remove the screw securing the bracket at the rear end of the finisher to
the sill.
	3. Using a suitable punch, remove the inserts from the seven plastic
retainers and withdraw the finisher from the fill.

Refit
	4. Reverse the procedure. Using new plastic retainers.

As for the reattachment of the Safari Gard sill, you'll have to call them.

The emergency brake operates on the driveshaft instead of using the more
typical rear brakes. I've heard similar problems that have been attributed
to an eccentric drum for the emergency brake, and solved by resurfacing.

Hi there

I recently acquired a workshop manual for my 3.9l Discovery. According to the manual two types of 3.9l engines exist with :
8.13:1 compression ratio; and
9.??:1 compression ratio,
but the manual does not say where the difference comes in.

Does anyone know to what exactly the difference in compression ratio is due to?

RN sells a front receiver adapter. If you buy the hitch and drill a
hole in the tube perpendicular to the hole that is already thefe you
can mount the receiver with the pin horizontal. This rests nicely on
the hi-lift and up you go front or rear.

I had this set up when we went in Keene, but did not have to use it -
I think you were there.

I always had a spare water pump on trips to Mexico (I lived in San Diego for
8 years and I went often before I moved to N. Cal). I don't know about any
GM parts that bolt on, but if you find out post to the list.

My rule of thumb for Mexico is if you go alone bring any part that has a good
chance of breaking and leaving you walking. The best way to go to Mexico is
with a few friends with two or more vehicles. We always rented one of those
ridged tow bars that bolt/strap to the front end of the disabled vehicle and
fit on a standard 2" tow ball on the tow vehicle.

Indeed. The lack of knowledge amongst the Rover salespersons that I have
met (Jim - excepting you) is boggles the mind. NO knowledge of the
company/history whatsoever. Took the Disco into the shop for the first time
this AM to correct a *bad* brake squeal (when the brakes weren't applied).
The "service representative" knew nothing about "Series" vehicles and
precious little about the current models. If I were in charge of LRNA, I'd
make all salespersons pass a *written* test before being allowed to sell the
vehicles. (Maybe that explains the new Land Rover University being built at
Lanham.)

It is a tribute to the vehicles that they sell so well when the sales staff
knows so little. Cheers

Subject: Dead tach on '87 RR

The tachometer on my 87 RR has decided to quit. I have about 90K miles on
the vehicle.

I first noticed the problem no more than one day after replacing the
alternator. (May have been same day and I just failed to notice.) Does
anyone think there's a correlation? Or, is there something else I ought to
check out? (I had NOT been fiddling around with the electricals or behind
the instrument binnacle.)

Also, a second (and unrelated) question: I had a local garage change the
spark plugs on the 3.5 about 5K miles ago. Reading through the RR shop
manual it states very ominously that only the correct type of plugs should
be used or MAJOR engine problems could develop. The plugs in there are
AC's (R44XLS). Should I replace with Champions as the shop manual
specifies or am I just being *paranoid* here?

Greeting Tom! (from cold Madison, WI)...

Not that I'd know for sure (gotta ask the other RR experts here, I'm
afraid), but I'd definitely look for blame on the cable side.......prolly
not the alternator (but then again, this is Lucas...)

Again, I am not sure about the plugs.....just have to be careful with the

Thanks everyone for the responses on the Thule rack for the D90.

The basic rack kit and the luggage basket seems to be the best bet for my
needs. I will mount the shovel & Max tool to the sides of the rack or the
cross bars. Chain saw, cooler, and camping gear will be bungeed in the
basket.

I forgot about the roof tent. That does have to be around 300 pounds when
occupied. Of course the truck is stationary, not bouncing along the trail.
I think total weight up there will be just about 100 pounds so I should be
okay.

Getting things up and down will be an adventure as I am 5'8" tall, well
almost. Hey isn't that the 20 something year old nephews job :>?

Thanks for the tip on prices. I will shop for the attachments. Europarts
lists some of this stuff on his net address and prices look reasonable.

I talked to a friend at work yesterday he's a mechanical Eng. and designs
all of our test fixtures etc. Were looking at the feasibility of
fabricating a rack that will store the Jackall vertically on the spare tire
carrier, to the right of the tire, and also possibly mount two jerry cans
back to back in front of the spare that would swing away to allow access to
the tire. Of course all of this depends on how much weight you can safely
add to the tire carrier. Does anyone know how much a five gallon jerry can
weighs? Water is around 8.5 pounds per gallon so I would guess around 45
pounds?

I really like this idea. It keeps everything heavy low on the vehicle and
easily accessible and I can remove the rack when I don't need it like the
Thule.

I'll let everyone know how it all turns out.

Cheers,

At least he's not driving a White Bronco. <GRIN> Besides, a series
Rover couldn't avoid having a low speed chase.

Subject: Oil weight for Disco

I need to pick up a case of oil for the Disco today but drove my other car
and can't remember the proper weight. Help? - Not to dwell on the obvious,
but we're talking summer weight - although it's in the mid-40's in Wisconsin
today!

Thanks in advance!
