Subject: Tax Advantages for LR Owners!

According to the New York Times (Sunday May 26 - Money&Business Section)
there can be some tax advantages to owning a heavy SUV (like a Land
Rover) if you use it for business purposes. Check out the article.

For me the story was spoiled a little for two reasons.
1) Although the teaser on the front page shows a disco, and the title of
the article is "At Tax Time, Your Land Rover Might Not Be a Guzzler" the
story focuses on a Land Cruiser (vs a Cadillac).
2) I don't use mine for business :-(

I am trying to reach all NAS 110 owners in the US to find out all the
modifications that have been done and to see what accessories are popular on
110s. Please respond with your input if you have a 110. thanks -TRE

The tax advantage is only for a GVW over 6000 pounds.

While I do use our RR for business (and pleasure) its GVW is only 5997.

Just for the fun of it I checked and the D90 SW is 6003 and the Disco is 6019.

Subject: 3.9L camshaft slap

Damn, I *knew* I should have saved those postings about someone's D90 making a
clunking sound at idle or about its camshaft being remachined. For a couple of
weeks I'd been hearing a clunk-clunk-clunk coming from the front of the 3.9L in
my Discovery. There seemed to be about one clunk per revolution of the belt, so
I thought that perhaps a pulley or bearing there was loose or worn. But it only
took a second or two for one of the techs at Symes to identify the noise as the
camshaft slapping against the housing at the front of the engine; it seems that
the cam walks back and forth slightly. There's a fix for this. They add a "cam
core" to the shaft to, I'm guessing, make the camshaft a bit longer so that the
play in it is eliminated.

When I asked whether this was a recall, the Solihull-trained tech assured me
that "we used not to do anything about it, but so many people complained that
we'll install the cam core if people ask for it." It's not going to damage the
engine permanently, the guy said, but "it's just annoying." I'll say. I wonder
why, in thirty or so years with this engine, LR didn't catch this before. Is
this a new camshaft they've put in the Discoveries and Defenders? Or is it just
one of those charming but quite audible British eccentricities we all love?

I suppose I won't have to worry about the camshaft suddenly escaping from the
engine and joining me in the passenger compartment, but I'd like to know if
anyone else has had this experience. What excuses/explanations did you hear?
