Thanks for the detailed description of the job. I'm sure it will be of

The NY Times is at http://www.nytimes.com.

I have not tried it so if they do not have the article I can mail you a copy.

Subject: Fuel Pump Replacement-The Pump

I took a close look at the failed fuel pump I replaced 2 days ago.

The electrical wire entrance connection on the top of the pump on the
bolting flange was loose. There was a flaky rusty layer of something on top
of the pump between the flange and the electrical connection.

The electrical connection pulled off the flange and revealed rusted/corroded
electrical connections underneath. The leads going into the pump actually
ended in two bits of wire sticking up out of the bottom (of the flange) side
of the electrical connection. Testing with an ohm meter showed about 4-5
ohms of resistance, the same reading as on the new pump.

I have not tried hooking it up to 12 volts but I bet it will work. I
probably could of just soidered to the two bits of wire and kept going with
the old pump.

However, since LR seems to provide for 3 wires in all their connectors, this
one through the pump flange had a space for a third wire. Space, no filler,
no plug in the hole, just a hole though the flange from the bottom (gas
side) into the top of the electrical connection.

Does any body know of a gas proof sealer for this kind of hole?

My pump started failing when the fuel tank was replaced in January. The
movement it got being switched from one tank to another caused the
electrical connection on this 8 year old pump to loosen up and it leaked
fuel whenever I filled up.

Hi Kevin

Thanks very much for the info. Now I am wondering...

My vehicle has the 8.13 ratio. I bought this car in Feb 96 with only =
17000Km? I was told the guarantee expires in June 96 which means the =
vehicle was purchased new in June 95 - with a low compression 3.9.

Could it have something to do with the fact that I find myself in South =
Africa. SA has often been used as an international economic "dumping" =
ground.

Or could it also have something to do with catalytic converters? Our =
vehicle do not need them.

Regards
Philip

The Rover 3.9L had 8.13:1 from '89 until it was increased to 9.35:1 in =
'93
the 4.0L in the new Disco's also has 9.35:1.

Barnett,

Just read your postings regarding the D90 roof racks - holiday weekend
and all. You have received correct info about the racks and the
accessories. My biggest complaint is the amount of stuff you can put
on top, and the height at which it will be. Since I'm 5'7", I need to
carry a ladder, and with 2 kids and the wife I space in the D90 was
scarce. I solved both problems by 'investing' in the Safari rack.
WOW what a beastie!! The dual rear ladders make access easy (plus
they look very Rover) and the rack has more room and capacity than
I'll ever use. The rack is expensive though, but will last a
lifetime. I bought the rack and had it installed at Land Rover of
Colorado Springs - a top notch dealer to be sure. They had the best
price (by hundreds $$) and took less than 1/2 a day to install and
were very reasonable about the labor costs - I'd reccommend these guys
in a heartbeat.
Now that my standard roof racks are mothballed in the gararge, and at
my wife's insistence to get rid of 'junk' in the garage I need to sell
my standard roof racks. I think I paid about $200 new and they are
only slightly used, I'd be willing to let 'em go for $100.
I would also be very interested in the results of your custom
Jackall/Jerrycan mounts, I have been toying with a Jackall mount on
the spare tire rack for a while now.

Subject: tidying winch cable

I found a nice way to spool the winch cable so that it's nice and neat. I
parked the truck and then hooked the cable to my lawn tractor, backed out
the cable with the tractor and then put the tractor in neutral. I then
winched in the tractor, which was light enough to allow me to guide the
cable so that it spooled neatly while under a nice bit of tension.

The last time it did this I had the cable anchored to a post and the truck
in neutral and on a slight incline and it just wasn't satisfactoy - too much
tension and having to walk backward while the truck moved etc.
