Lubrication would be my first guess, besides, it's easiest to fix. You
can get a little squeeze tube of speedometer lubricant from any auto
parts store, or even K-mart, or that "French" store "Target." (French
pronunciation!) ;-)
Mine is starting to "bounce" just a bit at low speeds, below about 20,
so I think I need to do this as well.
As for the "angle drive" device at the back of the speedometer, where
the cable enters: These are a weak point in the speedometer setup, and
I've heard that many a speedometer has been replaced when all that was
really needed was a $70 part. (Even at that, it's WAY overpriced!) Mine
went out, so I bought a replacement, and then decided to try to fix my
old one. They're really not that difficult to fix! What happens is a
small "dime sized" (maybe smaller) circular disk is pressed in to hold
the gears in. This comes loose over time, and either falls out, or just
hangs there, allowing the gears not to contact each other. I "mangled"
mine a fair amount trying to stamp the housing so as to hold it in
place, but were I to do it all over again, I think I'd just clean the
grease off it really well, and use some kind of epoxy or JB Weld to hold
it together. You have little to risk ($3 tube of glue) if it doesn't
work, and roughly $70 to gain if it does work.
Getting back to the speedometer lubrication, I think the cable is a two
piece one, but not positive. If you disconnect the end at the
speedometer head (angle gear) and carefully drive slowly you should be
able to see the cable spinning inside the housing. This should tell you
if it's the cable spinning erratically (causing the needle to jump) or
if it's actually in the speedometer head itself.
Good luck!
Dave (just call me speedo!) Brown

Hi Dave:
Three of my four have been removed by mother nature and me. It looks shitty,
especially in the back, but they just seem to be magnets for trees, ruts,
etc. I wish there was a cover that didn't wrap around, and could just cover
the ends.
BTW, I replaced the temp sensing unit, and the car runs fine now. The EFI
light even stayed out for about 10 miles !!!!!!! I guess the CO senors are
next. Thanks again for the article.
I have one other problem of concern. The Speedometer. At all temps at low
speed, it bounces from zero to 60 mph. It then stabilizies at about 30MPH,
and depending on the outside temp, will not go any higher than 50-60 mph. It
just bounces there. I thought it would be cured by changing the R/A adapter
at the speedo. (Jaeger made [France]; in a Lucas box! [yummy]. Could it be
lubrication ? It is the second speedometer the vehicle has had. In the
manual, it speaks of a speed transducer at the trans, I think.
Any other thoughts??
Thanks
Gary

I think LRNA's goal was to avoid any gas guzzler (and/or luxury tax) by
exceeding the 6000lb threshold-
Hey whats a rule if you can find a way around it.
If your 90 is too stiff just swap out the springs for something softer

Actually, I've decided to include my garden tractor along with the
rest of my off road equipment. I can use the winch and a pulley to hoist it
on the back of the Discovery. Also, I can strap a shovel and the hi-lift to
the side of the tractor. Now does that say "serious off roader" or what? I
bet there aren't any j**ps out there with a garden tractor accessory. In
addition to tidying up the winch cable after use, I can use the tractor to
mow areas for picnics or places for working on the Disco. I can even use
the tractor as emergency locomotion . . .

If so, do you like it? That would free up the back for Jerry cans etc.” This question was addressed in a question from a Series III owner in the Dec ‘95 LROI, Drive Train Q&A section written by Mike Hallett. His comments are somewhat relevant here since it raised other considerations: “Remember, too, the bonnet needs to open fully without the tyre snagging anything. Frankly, I think you are ill-advised putting it up there in the first place. It is an awful lot of dead weight to dump on what is, after all, only a light aluminum pressing. It is asking quite a lot of the hinges, too. You will find that most seasoned rough-road travelers are reluctant to carry the spare in that location because of the structural damage that is eventually inflicts. Forward visibility can also be somewhat restricted, though if you are tall, it probably won’t bother you too much. Weight distribution is also improved if the spare is hung on the back end of the vehicle, assuming you run light-to-moderately laden most of the time.” YMMV, Gerry “Phoenix AZ” Elam ------------------------------[ <- Message 14 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960530 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Subject: Substitute parts lists
Well, I've gotten some response for the "substitute" parts list, and
I'm currently html-ing it up to throw up on the web.
If I may be so bold, I have two requests for the group:
1. Please include what type of vehicle (RR, Disco, D90, etc) the part
is for (I only know so much, and that ain't too much).
2. Keep those substitute parts coming! John Purnell, I know you had
the part number for the locking gas cap (which I, in all my usual
level-headedness, left at the pump - one would think that would be
hard to do with your keys still in it, eh?)
In other rover news:
I put on the Surrey top this morning, and love it! works great at
45degrees, although the first fitting was a little tight this morning
in that chilly weather.. had to wait for the sun in the afternoon to
velcro up the alpine bar.

Lately, my girlfriend has gotten into the habit of calling me
"Grandpa Bob," as my turn signal always seem to be blinking.... This
usually happens when I signal for the turn and forget to shut off the
blinker (because, as we know, unless to turn the steering wheel 3/4 of
a full turn, it won't switch off the signal itself). Must be those
brain cells I lost in college. Remember, next time you see a Yellow
D90 w/a surry top and the blinker tickin away on the trail, give a
wave!

Lee,
I'm trying very hard not to be envious of you, and be happy for you! I
ended up taking the dealer's (what I thought) ridiculous offer of $28.6K
for my 9 month old LOADED '94 Discovery with 17K miles. I honestly
couldn't find anyone to offer more! I saw it on their lot about a week
later for $32K. I know it was mine! I could recognize every scratch,
nick, after market mud flaps, dented gas tank, scratched up underside
rear bumper....
I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY like to get one of the limited edition
Discoverys, but I'm afraid that I couldn't even afford to keep the one I
had. (My reason for selling.) I have a LR "marketing bulletin" that
describes them, if you don't, and could FAX it to you if you want. Also
have one on the '97 automatic trans D90.
I forwarded your first note of advertising your Discovery to a friend of
mine who used mine for a week while I was out of town (and LOVED it),
but he's still undecided on getting one.
Keep me informed on the limited editions, I want to see them as soon as
they arrive! The dealer might have a hard time getting me out of the
drivers seat though, and may have to provide me with a towel to wipe up
all my drool! "No! You can't show this to that customer, I'm "driving"
it right now! Wait till I finish this Camel Trophy course!... Hey! Is
that the key in your hand???..."

If you have a D90, please send me your Year and issue number and
I'll organize them and post them back to the list. I noticed
for example that Rich Ruffer has a 94 D90 #664. My 94 is #775.
I think it would be fun to see who has what numbers and where
they are located, color etc.

Year, vehicle number, color, nickname, Owner name, location, email.
If you don't want to include all of this info, at least include the

Well, it's just a chrome (painted black), gutter-mount light bar. It
sits in the drip rails (a.k.a. gutters) when I'm using it and in the
garage when I'm not. The wiring runs down the right windshield molding
in a wire loom and is ty-rap'd to the molding. I have a "flat-4" trailer
wiring connector under the hood to connect & disconnect the lights. The
whole setup, including the brushbar lights cost US$250 tops. Really
nothing special and CERTAINLY not a LR part! (otherwise it would have
cost $2,500!)

But just think how "bad" your rover would look with aluminum patches
pop-riveted to it's body panels!

Subject: ZF Trannys/Bouncy Speedo
First, I noticed the mention of the similarity between the BMW and RR ZF
transmission. In my quest of knowledge about engine conversions, I called
the ZF corp. US headquarters and asked the automatic tranny guy who else
used the ZF-4HP-22. It turns our that BMW uses them extensively in all
models and that even Jaguar used them in their sedans! It's the same
transmission. He told me that Jaguar used it because it was the only
automatic that could take the abuse from their bigger engines!
I've got a problem with my speedo needle on my '87 RR bouncing
wildly until I hit 25-30 MPH. Is this a problem with a spring or do you
think it's the cable? Let me know if you've got any tips!
Cheers! John

Hi all

Bob, Have left my surrey on sense I bought it 3 weeks ago. This morning 45
degrees and raining, sometimes pretty hard. I put the heat on (wasn't
wearing a jacket :>)and drove to work on the Mass pike, no problem... well
except for people staring at me like I was nuts! (Doesn't matter I'm
getting used to that!)
Roof racks.
Chris B,
I called LR in Colorado where you had your safari rack installed and talked
to David in parts. The part# he gave me for the rack is LRNA90FSRR. The
same part # in the LRNA SW brochure. He remembered when you had you're rack
installed. He told me that the actual rack is not exactly like the one
pictured in the SW brochure (surprise). The rear ladder is still on the
drivers side rear, but only extends down to the tail lights not past the
frame as in the picture. Cost was $1650. Thanks for putting me in touch
with them.
I also talked to Steve at Britpac. They have a removable quarter rack that
bolts to the front safari cage similar to the RN setup. Easy to remove and
is black powder coated for $550. Steve gave me a great tip also. With the
jerry cans mounted on the rack you can refuel simply by using a siphon hose
and going directly to the fuel tank instead of taking the cans down. Why
didn't I think of that?
Cheers,
Barnett
Now where do I mount that lawn tractor?

D90 w/a surry top and the blinker tickin away on the trail, give a
wave!

Subject: LRMW service Success
Yesterday evening I picked up My 95 Discovery from LRMW in Natick
after an overnight stay they. I confessed to them that I was being
extremely picky about having some extra items attended to while I was
there, over and above the 15k service.
The Service Technician, Steve, (a Range Rover owner)absolutely
excelled himself and exceeded all my hopes for diligent and thorough
work in solving every problem that I threw at him.
LRMW is extremely lucky to have someone like Steve on its staff. The
car very simply feels once again like it just came off the production
line.
I loved my car before, amd have fallen in love all over again.
Thank you Steve and LRMW.
