Subject: trip report in D90

I got home from work at 5pm to find a message from one of the kids in
my Explorer Troop (Boy scout program for older scouts 16-18). They
wanted to go down to Southern Utah and camp and they wanted to go in
my d90 (T.E.D. #775).

Two hours later we had four scouts, myself and camping gear piled in
the D-90 (this feat was accomplished to my custom, side-facing seats
in the back). The top was off and the weather was threatening to rain
but they were all for adventure so off we went.

I told them that instead of going to see Twister, they were going to
live it! The drive to Gobblin Valley from Provo is about 3 1/2 hours.
We hit Soldier Summit at 7,500 feet at about 8pm and it was a bit
nippy!

We did a lot of dirt roading with a little mandatory four-wheeling
thrown in. I let each of the boys drive a little and it was a
definite highlight for them. They informed me that my Defender was
the hottest vehicle any of them could think of (including Porsches!)
I take that as quite a compliment. Although my wife still wants a
Volvo wagon!

Anyway, about 100+ miles of dirt road later we hit the pavement for the
trip home. The interior was filthy. I worried a little about dust
accumulating on the stereo but one of the scouts put my fears aside by
spilling corn nuts directly into the cassette bay. Somehow it locked
my Pablo Cruise tape in so it wouldn't eject! Besides the stereo the
blinkers wouldn't work (I think it's a fuse).

On the way home we hit thunderstorms for an hour and a half. The font
seat passengers did fine. (I do second the motion regarding speed and
having a towell handy). The rear seat passengers were hunkered down
underneath the biggest sleeping bag I've ever seen.

To prove their machismo, they insisted on ripping their shirts off for
the last stretch through town. I just pretended that I didn't know
them. Fun trip. I told them they lived through Twister and the
Poseidon Adventure in the same journey.

I have two questions: 1.) what is the going rate for a Surrey Top?
2.) How do you take the door windows off. I couldn't see how it was
done?

Thanks
John and T.E.D. #775 (d90 94)

Thanks! I got it and looked it over. Oddly enough, my solenoid is
different from the one in your picture and in the photos from the Web
site that was mentioned, but I think the wiring is the same. I'll play
with it this weekend and letcha know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

I now know the advantages for a manufactuer to make the GVW OVER 6,000 lbs.
(tax reasons, gas guzzler and luxury tax etc.) What are the reasons to keep
the GVW UNDER 6,000 lbs.? My Range Rover is 3 lbs. under and yesterday I
looked at a Chevy truck and Chevy Astro van, both GVW's were ~50 lbs. under
6,000.

This question was addressed in a question from a Series III owner in the Dec
95 LROI, Drive Train Q&A section written by Mike Hallett. His comments are
somewhat relevant here since it raised other considerations:

Remember, too, the bonnet needs to open fully without the tyre snagging
anything. Frankly, I think you are ill-advised putting it up there in the
first place. It is an awful lot of dead weight to dump on what is, after
all, only a light aluminum pressing. It is asking quite a lot of the hinges,
too. You will find that most seasoned rough-road travelers are reluctant to
carry the spare in that location because of the structural damage that is
eventually inflicts. Forward visibility can also be somewhat restricted,
though if you are tall, it probably won^Rt bother you too much. Weight
distribution is also improved if the spare is hung on the back end of the
vehicle, assuming you run light-to-moderately laden most of the time.^T

 YMMV,

********************************************************************************

Fraid I'm going to have to correct an item here. The bonnet skin is
steel, not aluminum, the underlying frame is also steel. The bulkhead
and door frames are also steel. But back to the bonnet, it will easily
handle the weight, heck many of the CT support 110's have their spares
mounted there, and then have have pictures of two or three guys sitting
atop the spare. Forward visibility IS a problem, particularly if you have
the NA spec tires which a pretty tall to look over.

Hello all,

Does anyone have a drawing, plan, dimensions, or a good picture of a
front bumper with a winch mount for a RR Classic. (Mine's an '87) My
roommate is willing to make me one in exchange for rent. I've seen his
welding work, and he does an excellent job, and has access to a wire
feed welder. But I need a plan or very good picture for him to work
from. I don't have a winch yet, but plan to add a Warn 8000 or 9000
winch.

I am also interested in replacing the black plastic sill protector
(underneath the doors) with replacement steel "rock slider" types.

Any good, detailed photos on the web? I have access to a large sized FAX
machine if you could fax it?

Please help!!!

Thanks a LOT! debrown@srp.gov

Dave,

I've been looking around for Rock Sliders for my 1988 RR, and am told
that Safari Gard has them, but when I called and asked for info, I was
sent materials that failed to include them. Later, Rick Hanson, who has
a rolling display of Safari Gard goodies on his D90, suggested that I
contact the owner, Greg, and grill him directly about their
availability. Tom Walsh has them on his Disco, and they seem to be
pretty stout. At $500 (the pair) they ought to be 8^*

I've asked Eric Zipkin if his suppliers have them, but nothing positive
has come back on that yet. Keep us posted if you find a good supplier.

BTW, is it really necessary to post to three different lists? My inbox
runneth over. But if everybody did it we could rescind the split.

Dave,

I have a good plan for a winch mount that fits between the chassis
horns on my Disco. I understand that it would work for the RR - you would
need to check the distance between the horns. However, it sounds like you
are looking for a bumper/winch mount though. Let me know.

Thanks for the tip on the siphoning, what a great idea!

apply tension to the winch cable when reeling the cable back in, hook
the tractor onto the front bumper or bull-bar, leaving the winch cable

I helped Gerald install the Safari Guard Sills on his discovery last
weekend, and once we figured out a short cut installation took about
an hour or so per side. But it took installing one side to figure out
the short cut. As the cars are identical in this area, our experience
will parallel yours.

If you go for this set up, take advantage of having big holes drilled
in the sills to pump in some rust regardant such as waxoyl. a little
extra rust protection cannot hurt. have some zinc based primer handy
to finish off the holes you have drilled prevent rust from starting on
the metal. We didn't but copious quantities of WD 40 should help.

I'm assuming you have an original equipment radio. To reset your Clarion radio to accept a new code, press the BAND key until
the word CODE shows up on the LCD display. Then input your new code. You
don't need to cut power to the radio.

If you have a radio from a later year, I understand it works differently. One
LR tech told me the process: reset power to the radio and keep it turned on for at least
an hour. It will reset itself and you can reenter the code. I don't know if
this latter procedure is correct.

I suspect the transmission interlock which prevents starting in gear. This

assembled the rest himself.... well I got a little ansy over the
electrics ( etc.. ) at that point ( seing how it was not designed for
the application specifiacally ( one spark eh... ) ).... but the
non-motor operated pump scenario ( with a bulb siphon to start it )
sounds resonable.

Bob
FWIW my dealer was able to access the top of my auto gearbox by opening
up the center console to solve a diff lock problem.
You might try removing the center section of the console to see if you can
access the switch yourself.
regards
Chris

My 87 RR sometimes balks at starting in P or N. If you shift back and
forth a while it will eventually start. Not a major problem yet.

I suspect the transmission interlock which prevents starting in gear. This
is also apparantly the Backup light switch.

Does this sound like the problem? Can I adjust or clean the switch? Local
RR dealer wants $130 for new switch and cable ($190 list!)

             Thanks, Bob Skillman 87 RR

That's a much better idea. If you got stuck, you could crawl across
the hood and slide into the lawn tractor seat and then use the tractor to
pull the cable out. Once the cable was attached to a tree, you could ride
the tractor back to the truck for winching. No more boots!

Yes, I've seen this in other cars. Open up your shifter casing a see
how it's positioned, it may be something as simple as a loose screw or
crud on the contacts. Chances are you won't have to replace it, just
clean it. Besides, I suspect there are a variety of neutral select
switches that might work.
