Subject: Re: tire sizes for RR

I think William Owen has answered this well, but you should know the 65
is wrong in the 205/65/R16; either this is a mistake or the tire size is
too small.

As William says the stock tires are a very good compromise for all terrain
use, better than most other AT tires, but like them it is not really a mud
tire. I've seen and heard of lots of RRs using the 225/75/R16 tire size,
which is a little wider but gives the same outside diameter and an
infinite number of choices in tread design, so you might try that if you
want some special purpose (especially mud) tire. In the 205R16 size more
options are available in the UK than the US, so you could consider mail
order.

Cheers

John

Subject: RE: RR radio another question

Thanks to the eight people who mailed me with suggestions on how to reset the
Range Rover badged Clarion radio after an incorrect code entry. The most
popular suggestion was pressing the BND button until it cleared. Other
suggestion included leaving powered on for an hour and disconnecting the
battery for a few minutes.

Unfortunately it didn't respond, so I had to pay to have the microprocessor
reset.

Thanks,

Brian

Subject: Discovering Body Rot

Discovery owners and those who would be,

I've always figured that body rot in a Land-Rover is mostly limited to the
few steel parts, particularly the bulkhead and floorboards on Series
Land-Rovers and the steel inner body panels and tailgate on the Range Rover.
I don't believe that I'd heard anything about body rot problem on a
Discovery. I'd heard that in areas where the roads are salted that you can
have electrolysis of the aluminum parts where they join the steel parts
(again, on a Series LR).

But is seems that you can have holes rot right through the aluminum body
panels on a Discovery, at least on a two-door, due to trapped mud which
stays wet. Check out this URL for a photo of what can happen:

    http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/pbrad/disco.htm

If you have a Discovery, it might be well to check out what you can do to
flush out your hidden crevices where mud might accumulate.

Don't get me wrong! I still want a Range Rover or Discovery one of these
days but will first take a close look under the skin!

Cheers,

Granny

Most 300D's have the same seat switches as used in the exchange
mentioned previously, my in-laws have both an RR and the benz. The RR's
switches have been worked on 3 or 4 times; the benz: never. Might be a
very wise switch for people in dusty/dirty places. We also found that
volvo window switches are prone to grit-death last night - also mounted
flat. It seems a very common problem. A little contact cleaner goes a long
way.

The 1996 BSROA Pilgrimage Tour was a great success...
Ten members from the U.S. arrived (all on different flights!!) and were =
ultimately joined by members Andrew Cutting and Clive M. Smith.

Some of us spent the first day driving to the National site and stopping =
off for an eye-opening tour of the Dunsfold Land Rover Museum! Talk =
about amazing history sitting in front of you! My big treat was an offer =
by Philip Bashall to drive #1 production Lightweight (!!) to the rally =
site - *if it wouldn't be too much trouble* Does a bear dump in the =
woods? I thought I was dreaming... Thanks so much, Mr. Bashall! It was a =
real treat! What a beautiful Land Rover! The stuff he had in the main =
barn was beyond reality. Floatation Rover, prototype 2A V8 (Goldenrod), =
VELAR, 100-inch prototype, #1 2A, prototype new Range Rover, Militar, =
Pink Panther (one green - one pink), prototype 101, Lama prototype, and =
more wonderful stuff!!! He let me look at his parts loft. I fainted. =
Some stuff up there he asked me not to make public! Well, my word is my =
bond! Go see for yourself.

The ARC rally was very wet and very muddy. The weather was not kind to =
us this year but it was expected. Dunsfold had several vehicles on =
display. The various series clubs were on hand. Someone was even there =
driving a Land Rover Centaur!!! I had never seen one of these =
*fictional* vehicles before. And here it was in the flesh! Pictures of =
same will appear in upcoming Rover Reference coverage of the event.

Hooked up with David Bowyer and off we went for a four-day escape to =
Wales - David refers to these trips as *secret Wales* I called it *Lost =
Wales!* Hundreds of miles of byways and muddy tracks were crossed over =
the next three days. All types of terrain - mud, rock, river crossings! =
Scenery was breath-taking. The photos don't do it justice! Thanks to =
Barry Enis for doing video duties this year.

And thanks to David Bowyer for providing a very well-organized tour of =
Wales with his much-known D90 V8 Station Wagon being the point car. The =
BSROA has used David twice now, and I can wholehartedly recommend him =
and his school and his tours of Wales and France! Well done, David!

Next year's ARC will also take place in Northern Wales - a different =
part of the country. Planning is already underway for this event and =
possible off-roading at David Mitchell's spread in Bala.

Thanks to LRO and Nick Dimbleby for the group photo which I hope will =
see print in an upcoming issue of LRO...

cheers

Subject: Annabelle Gets Deep 6'd

Well, in the recent flash floods here in the Midwest, Annabelle, my '89
RR, got deep 6'd in about that much water. She's over at the RR dealer
in Milwaukee now, and they've written her off as totaled (engine seized,
ECU & all electronics gone, seats ruined, etc.). So as soon as I settle
up with the insurance co. I'll be in the market for another RR.

My question to all you RRoverites is what, in your opinion, is a good
year. There are some clean '90's around at a good price, and I just
talked to Lanny at RN and he's got 2 '91's for sale. I haven't seen any
'92's, but there are some '93's on the market.

Did sway bars come in the '90's, or was that '91 when they were
introduced? The handling of my '89 was the most annoying problem.

Oh yes, and here's a bit of advice to all of you.... When you see the
water just below the driver's window, never, NEVER, open the door.

Date: Tue, 11 Jun 1996 16:14:05 -0700

I guess, as a British Car owner, I'll eventually have to get used to it.
But until it goes off warranty, I'll just keep taking it to the dealer.
Today's "Leak of the Week" comes from the Trans-cooling line (the lower
one, with the temp sensor) where it attaches to the Radiator. I don't
know what motivated it to leak, it's just started leaking. (needs a new
fluid line.)

Also, while I had it at the dealer (where everyone greets me by name, so
either I've been there too often, or they are very good at remembering
names) I had the lead technician, listen to my "camshaft rattle" and he
said that all the 3.9's did that to some extent and that they could fix
it by a) adding a nylon button to the end of the camshaft (the cheap
way) or b) machine a spacer to make it fit right (the right way) or c)
replace the camshaft & lifters (sounded like the expensive way)
depending on the engine type. In any case it's scheduled for a
"overnighter" next week to have all this looked after.

Subject: Free HP and Torque in Discovery?

Pardon me if this was covered before and I missed it. But somehow I got
"unsubscribed" from the list.

I just received the Rovers North spring newsletter and there was a story in
there about more power for the Discovery (and others) from Borla R&D. With
their new exhaust system and other tweaks they got 19.8 more horsepower and
32.5 more ft/lbs of torque.

But the article claims that by simply bumping the timing from 6BTDC to 12
BTDC they got +10.4 HP and +25.7 ft/lbs of torque.

Since I don't have a shop manual (yet) how difficult is this and do I need
any special equipment? It does say that the timing is controlled in the RR
by the ECU prom. What about the Discovery 1995?

I live in Maryland and we have emmission testing, how will this effect that?

Subject: Discovery leaks & other problems

Here is a follow-up on my 1995 Discovery with 22500 miles. This is the first
time it has been to the shop for any problems. It is still there with one
problem.

*A water leak from rain that forms a puddle on the front passanger floor
mat, it *originates from under the dash.

A leak around the cowl was sealed.

*A loud wistle from the engine, sounds like a manifold leak, that is worse
as the engine *drops in revs.

A leak in the intake manifold gasket. Gasket is being replaced over the weekend.

*The rear door window and one rear side window rubber gasket is cracking and
shrinking *at the corners.

Rubber molding for both windows on order. It will be replaced by a glass
sub-contractor.

The only problem with all this is that the dealer has put me in a
Pathfinder. It is a piece of crap at 23000 miles.

Subject: Web site & the Disco gets a name!

I've updated my "homepage" with some photos from a 4-wheeling trip I took last
weekend. There's a couple more "gonzo" shots of the Disco "in action".

Last weekend I went camping on a trip that was really a J**p outing i.e. I was
the ONLY LR in the group, though we did see one other Disco on the forest roads.
I went on a couple of the J**p trails and it was there that my Disco was named.
As the jeep CJ-5's went winding through the trees, I kept hearing in the CB
"Better send the Disco around, this is pretty tight!" "Where's that Disco
anyway?" "Oh, it's right behind me, never mind!" So after a couple of these
exchanges, they gave up! I got a kick out of how they kept calling it a
"Defender" (I wish!) The other "jeeper"s in the group had their heart in the
right place..."Your Disco might get scratched on this part" (oh yeah? what's
your point?)

Anyway, back to the name. Imagine my big black disco, complete with Thule
Roof-top box & light bar, lumbering though the woods on these narrow jeep trails
squeezing between trees. In the forest, the Discovery had the "grace" of a whale
as it plowed through the tree branches, so I named it (him?) "Willy" as in
"Willy the Whale" from the Disney cartoon.

Gotta go and buff out those tree marks on "willy"!

Unless your 110 is non standard, the diff ratio is the same as RR (3.54:1).
Additionally the 110 rear end uses a salisbury setup which is far more
heavy duty than the rover type used on both ends of the RR and front end
of 110.

I know that in Australia, 1980's (pre defender) 110 diesels (which used a
3.9 L Isuzu) had a different (taller) high ratio in the transfer case than
the V8 petrols. I'm sure all those British engineering type places which
advertise in Land Rover Intl could advise.

Subject: Free HP and Torque in Discovery?

Pardon me if this was covered before and I missed it.

I live in Maryland and we have emmission testing, how will this effect that?

William,

Sorry to hear of your problems. FYI, Atlantic British charges $399.95
for a cat converter and $219.95 for an AC blower.

I now have a workshop manual if you would like to consider doing these
jobs yourself or taking it to less expensive repair shop.

My AC blower has squeaked since at least last summer. I suggest turning
up the radio or opening the sun roof. But you've got me thinking... I'm
going to look in the manual to see how hard it is to access the blower.
A little lubrication might do the trick. Or, maybe there's an
inexpensive NAPA replacement. Worth checking.

Subject: LR articles

ROAD & TRACK's occassional SUV magazine, OPEN ROAD, latest issue has 2 LR
articles.

A comparison test between the D90 SW and the new Jeep for the coil list and
an article on the 1948 LR No. 1 for the leaf list.

My favorite thing about the ROAD & TRACK/OPEN ROAD road test is the test
data sheets. They often provide a nice profile line drawing of the vehicle
showing engine, seating, etc locations in the vehicles. Nice pictures here too.

(Too bad AUTOCAR stopped doing profiles drawings some years ago, their tests
just seem lacking.)

Oh... I almost forgot! The summer 1996 issue of OPEN ROAD also has a 4 page
write up on the 87-95 RR> Buying, cost of repair, what to look for...that
kind of article. Like we don't already know.

Subject: Disco CD Changer installation

     Hi all
After last months very successful 15k service, I treated my
Discovery to a LR CD changer. Installing this has to be the
easiest thing in the world. Less than 10 minutes to do! Actually
its so easy it may not even take you ten minutes because you
could get your kid to do it for you. All it takes is a phillips
screwdriver and a 10mm spanner (but that is optional IMHO).
The sounds is awesome and noise level high enough to blast your
eardrums. I loaded up a bunch of cd to test the unit and put a
very quiet classical cd just before REM's Monster (?)album, and
was really surprised when the first track ("Whats the frequency
Kenneth") came on and just about blasted me into orbit! He He!
Oddly enough I haven't listened to the radio since.... Maybe that
     says something.
     regards
     Chris Browne

Subject: Discovery Trailer Wiring

Below is the wiring of the trailer wiring connector hidden
behind the right rear jump seat in the back of the Discovery.
There's a small access panel on the rear plastic trim piece
that allows some access to this connector and the trailer
wires go through the body in a pre-punched and capped hole in
the floor.

NOTE: Be sure to seal this hole VERY WELL after you've run
the wires through it and BEFORE you get it wet!!!

There is 1 round connector with a rubber cap on it and 2 loose
wires that are terminated in crimp terminal that have to do
with the trailer wiring. (p.s. If someone with the electrical
schematics could verify this I'd be more comfortable!)

Yel = Yellow, Grn = Green, Vio = Violet
Wht = White, Org = Orange
Round Connector:
----------------
Red/Yel - GROUND
Black	- GROUND
Grn/Red	- Left Turn Lamp
Grn/Wht	- Right Turn Lamp
Grn/Vio	- Brake
Red/Blk	- GROUND
Red/Org - Tail lights (that come on with the head lights)

Loose Wires:
------------
Grn/Brn - Reverse Lamps
Vio/Brn	- +12V from Car Battery

For wiring a "Flat-4" american trailer I bought a
"Euro-Car" to Flat-4 adapter box and mounted it inside
the trim piece that hides all this wiring and ran the
"flat-4" wires through the hole in the floor to the
back of the car where the trailer hitch receiver is.
The Euro adapter has 3 wires in (L-Turn, R-Turn & Brake)
and 2 out (L & R Signal) so I wired:

"Euro box" - in
L-Turn	to Disco Grn/Red
R-Turn to Disco Grn/Wht
Brake to Disco Grn/Vio

"Euro box" - out
R-signal to Flat-4 Yellow
L-signal to Flat-4 Green

The tail light wire bypasses the adapter
Disco Red/Org to Flat-4 Brown
Ground to Flat-4 White

Subject: Range Rover overheating/generic 3.9L water pump

Has anyone experienced an intermittent overheating problem with a 3.9L. I've
checked the thermostat, the radiator flow, upper & lower radiator hoses, and
the water pump with no success. Someone mentioned that the distributor may be
overadvancing, creating detonation, leading to excessive heat. Any ideas?

While on the subject of cooling systems, does anyone have a generic water
pump, or another inexpensive solution to water pump failure.

In Camel Trophy pictures I saw the Defenders with front windshield

Island (www.europartsltd.com). They had the best price I could find
($257) and gave me great service. The convex mirror came from RN. Its
