I've noticed a deterioration in my third gear. It only happens during up-shifting, especially if I'm trying to accelerate quickly. I thought it may have been my sloppiness, but even being very consciencious doesn't seem to make much difference. I better call the dealership. Cheers! Subject: '97 LR update Date: Sun, 23 Jun 1996 12:13:24 -0700 From: Clint Olsen <olsenc@ichips.intel.com> Hello: I happened to browse one of these "1997 auto preview mags" at the local grocery store in WA last night, and I decided to thumb on over to the Land Rover section. They had a short blurb on the Defender and the CB40. I didn't get a chance to read much about the CB40 (no pic, just a sketch) other than it appears it will have the detuned 4.0L V8 like the Disco. They also confirmed the auto tranny for the Defender for '97. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of what was in store for the Disco for 1997. News of a longer chassis and rumblings of some new-fangled 5-cylinder TDi keep me glued to the magazine racks. Now if they made this new TDi available in the states... -Clint ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960624 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

Well, the sway bar came off this weekend without any complaint, (10 min)
and the change in on-road driving is noticeable but only barely and
certainly not dangerous. I should've done it sooner, I can already feel
the difference in wheel travel/articulation (going over the speed bumps
in the Mall parking lot, anyway :-)
While I was dirty, I finally got around to extending the axle vents. I
cut off a piece of the rear tube to take it to the hardware store in
order to match the size. When I cut it off, dirt fell out of it. I don't
know, but I think that's a bad sign. Time to change the axle oil, I
suspect! What I did was splice the front axle vent tube and run it to
the rear axle where it joins to the rear axle vent tube in a "T"
fitting with the remaining end of the fitting connected to a tube that
goes into the right-rear pillar behind the speaker through the same hole
in the floor as the trailer wiring. So the water will now have to be up
past the "alpine" windows before it gets into the axles. Total cost:
$2.50 + 45 min
Lastly, in response to my wife's criticism of me for "ruining a $40K
car" (referring to the hard won collection of pine-tree pinstripes the
Disco's been wearing lately) I went a got a bottle of Merguiers #7
polish and took to the body with my orbital polisher. Having never done
this before I was a bit apprehensive, but figured if all else fails I
could just take it to a professional. However, to my amazement, the only
thing NOT removed was the dent from a tree limb, all the scratches just
disappeared and the finish looks like it did a year ago when I drove it
off the lot!! (O.K., I'm easily impressed) Now, since there's no more
scratches, the only problem I have is this annoying pull in the steering
wheel every time I go past a shopping mall, I haven't figured that one
out yet. :-)
Happy Trails!

]From: g@ix.netcom.com (Gerald) Subject: Open sun rooves in the rain Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 01:13:21 GMT I left both my sun rooves open a crack in a thunderstorm. Lots of water inside. When I started to drive it came out of the rear air con ducts (all over a passenger). Dried out 48 hours later. Is there now lots of rust somewhere behind the ceiling? Saw one Disco in 3 days in Oslo and one in 3 days in Stockholm. Saw 3 driving around Swedish country side. Lots of RR; no Series or Defenders visible. My wave returned from two Discos back home in Boston. -- Gerald g@ix.netcom.com ------------------------------[ <- Message 7 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960624 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

What was the cause? And more important...what was the remedy!! My wife removed her rear loadspace mat last week and her carpet was soaked! Other than the occassional car wash, we don't encounter much water. There have been no visable leaks around the alpine windows, and no water pouring forth from the speakers....any ideas!? Any help is much appreciated! Cheers! On the fronts, the calipers came off easily, with no problems, despite the seemingly custom (British Leyland Special Tool #xxx) bolts that hold the calipers onto the disc. I'm sure that these are the same for various Rangies and Discos, so does anyone have any idea what the tool is and where I might find one before I round these suckers off beyond repair? ------------------------------[ <- Message 9 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960624 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

They told me that those were special for the Camel trophy 110's and very hard to get. Cheers, Barnett ------------- Original Text From: Richard Ruffer <rruffer@interserv.com>, on 6/22/96 8:24 PM: In Camel Trophy pictures I saw the Defenders with front windshield stickers that said "Defender" with an LR oval. Does anyone know where to get these? I just received two new parts--a surrey top (no more wet/hot butt) and a convex side mirror. The surrey came from Europarts on Long Island (www.europartsltd.com). They had the best price I could find ($257) and gave me great service. The convex mirror came from RN. Its field of view is much better than the stock mirror, not that I spend too much time in the left lane ;-) Great to have the list back. Went offroading Sunday and what a beautiful day for it. Four D90's out in convoy! Three soft tops, two AA yellow, one black, and one SW white. Trail was great offering some severe mud holes to cross that seemed bottomless, great rock stair steps to climb/decend and a rather harrowing stream crossing as you slid sideways, (no choice here :>) down a greasy bank. Stopped for lunch alongside a beautiful pond before proceeding on more interesting trails. Everything was very overgrown and some spots were definitely tight going. On some of the tougher sections we did some major wheel lifting! At one point we had three people hanging on to the side of one truck for ballast due to a nasty dropoff and a severe side slope. The right rear tire was about 3" off of the ground! Was a great day. The Defenders performed outstandingly and no one got stuck. A few observations I made though; Some of the D90's had OME suspensions some didn't, I had my swaybars removed no one else did, some had all terrains, some mud terrains, some trac edges all different sizes 235/85R16, 265/75R16, 255/85R16 (33.3"). My point is that we all went equally well thru everything the goodies didn't really matter! Good driving? Oh well Now I have to go to work :< Cheers, Barnett ------------------------------[ <- Message 11 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960624 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 07:09:51 -0600 From: Chris Brosious <brosious@pogo.den.mmc.com> Subject: Strange Meetings We decided to take the D90 out for a bit of 4 wheeling yesterday, to some of the 'local' trails. We settled on some of the trails near Saint Mary's Glacier, outside of Idaho Springs, not too far from Central City; about 1/2 hour drive west from Denver. Nothing really challenging here, except for 1 really steep spot with lots of ruts and tons of really loose rocks and dirt( got stuck once, had to back up and try a slightly different tack, dug/spun like crazy a couple of times, but made it up none the same; I felt better when a pair of motorcycles also got stuck in the same place we did!). There we were coming up a rocky trail from an old abandoned mine site, towards a little alpine lake when we came across another vehicle, parked in one of our favorite lunch spots (hey no big deal plenty of room in the Mnts. for everyone!) But the thing that got me was not only did these people have good taste in picking a lunch spot, but they were in a White '94 Defender 90, just like mine! What are the odds of this happening?? I mean I rarely see another D90 (unless its a group outing) and one just like mine? Anyway we exchanged greetings with these nice folks, commented on the vehicles and such and soon parted ways. I did not have a chance to formally introduce ourselves, so if y'all are out there, it was nice to meet you! Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 08:45:19 -0600 From: William Owen <IB011CA@smtpaoc.tsc.state.tn.us> Subject: Mag articles-old RR, D90 v. Wrangler Saw a new sport utility magazine while grocery shopping at Kroger last night. I think it was called "Open Road" and it had 2 articles about Rovers. The first was a comparison of the D90 SW to the 97 Wrangler. It said that off road the two vehicles matched up point for point. I'm sure that J**p paid them off :) Any advantage the D90 may have had was made up for by Wranglers limited slip rear diff. They made a big deal about the wading ability of both, noting that the Wrangler was water tight with water almost to its windows while the D90 "drains well." On road and as a daily driver they definitely preferred the Wrangler. Considering the costs they said overall the wrangler won. UHHGGG The second article was on the surprising affordability of older Range Rovers. (something I'm very familiar with). Pretty good article all told with a detailed list of changes each year (maybe good to compare with the FAQ list) and a detailed list of items to watch for when purchasing. Also listed common repair costs. Noted that the RRs depreciate much faster than many similar vehicles. Not bad reading for a general 4x4 mag. Four wheeler magazine also had its best buy (bargain) competition. The Toy Cruiser won the luxury catagory. However, one judge voted for the RR because it was the standard by which all other vehicles are judged and would be a bargain at any price. :) I also found an old Disco review which mentioned the 4x4 XPC tires. It said they stuck well to everything, except mud, which stuck to them. And, yes, I did actually remember to get some groceries for my poor pregnant wife. She always wonders why I take so long to do the shopping.
