Subject: Winch/Bumper for Discovery?
Date: Mon, 24 Jun 1996 09:14:37 -0600 (MDT)

I am looking into getting a winch and bumper for my '96 Land Rover
Discovery. Land Rover dealers can supply an A-frame bumper with an
8,000lb Warn winch for a mere $3,200 =:-o (ouch). For less than half
of that, I suppose one could get an ARB bumper with a Superwinch (or
other).

Does anyone have any experience or opinions that they would like to
share on this matter? I would like to get a bumper that would allow
the use of a High-Lift jack (I doubt the stock bumper would stand up
to that very well).

Thanks

Jeff,
Thanks for the tip on the mirrors. Are you saying that you can actually see
something out of these?:> If so I'm going to order some too.

From: Jeff Gauvin <jeffg@olympus.co.symbios.com>, on 6/24/96 8:28 AM:
Wrote this a week ago but couldn't post until now
due to the major's vacation:

Best $72 I ever spent
---------------------
I installed a pair of convex side mirrors on my D90 last night, and WOW!
I CAN SEE! These are Land Rover Genuine Parts mirrors (made by Britax)
and look identical to the standard flat glass mirrors, except that these
actually work. I got them thru Rovers North for $36 each. It is beyond
my powers of reasoning why LR didn't include these mirrors as standard
equipment. Installation took under ten minutes.

Various noises solved
---------------------
Took my D90 in to the shop yesterday to have the engine ticking noise
diagnosed, the broken catalytic converter replaced, and a coolant leak
near the waterpump fixed. The tech I took for a ride immediately
declared that the ticking noise was exhaust related.  He was right;
turns out that the downpipe gasket just in front of the cat was leaking.
The "funny" thing about this was, whether or not I had specifically
mentioned this problem, the gasket would have been replaced along with
the cat.

The annoying resonance noise at 40mph, which was diagnosed as a broken
catalytic converter, is now mostly gone (this has been a problem since
the day I bought the vehicle -- apparently it was delivered with a bad
cat!) I say mostly because I still hear a sound occasionally, but the
intensity and duration are reduced to a tolerable level. It's probable
that now that the loudest noise is gone I'm hearing something else.
Maybe the whole vehicle resonates at 40mph (driveline imbalance/
misalignment or BFG Mud Terrain vibrations) and anything that's not
tight vibrates.

The coolant leak was nothing major; just a loose clamp. Overall a
successful trip to the shop!

(BTW - while waiting for paperwork I got a chance to look over another
D90. This one had the Safari Guard rock sliders. I want some.)

Misc.
-----
Noticed another crack on my plastic hardtop. This one is along the
"channel" on the top cap where it attaches to the right rear quarter
window panel. I think the hardtop has fundamental problems in that the
top-to-side bolting areas are not strong enough and/or the FRP material
is too brittle. I have my doubts that the thing will last anywhere near
as long as the rest of the vehicle. I'm half tempted to offer LR a deal
-- they take the top back and give me a full Bestop and a few other
goodies (surrey top, winch bumper, skid plates, whatever I can get away
with). Either that or they continue replacing a $2000 top one piece at
a time. Either way I'm happy, at least until the warrantee runs out...

While I was at the shop I talked to a salesman RE: the '97 Defenders.
He mentioned that they would feature yet another soft top. First
Tickford, then Bestop, now...guesses anybody?

They also had a D110 on the lot, with a $45K sticker.

If they are smart they will run down to the nearest Jeep dealer and
copy the new Wranglers top. A friend just bought one. Very impressive,
we had it down in 5 minutes. Great plastic frames for the door tops
too! Gets rid of the gap between the doors and the top. I sincerly
hope LR blatently copies much of the design.

The Jeep still looks like a toy when parked next to the D90 though. No
ground clearance either. Otherwise a very nice vehicle.

Well, looks like I should start saving up for D90 top #5. (Plastic
hardtop, Besttop, Surrey Top, Bimini Top.......)

Jim:

Experience, I am afraid I don't have...but...when I get the $$....It'll be
an ARB winch bumber with a itty bitty 10,000lb winch or another (I haven't
decided which one)....

I think that the ARB is probably built to take a whole lot more abuse than
the LRNA model.....just my opinion..... <- not always a good thing to

Speaking of winch bumpers, I saw an ARB 'roo bar (definitely more than a
"brush" bar) with a new Warn 8274 winch on a Toyota FJ60, the old Land
Cruiser wagon. Definitely "Industrial" Strength! So, the question is:
does ARB make an 8274 bumper for the Disco. That would be intimidating!

               Jim:
This is odd, you have another plan that exactly matches my own.
Fog light I took the switch box off my car yesterday and found a
plastic support "box" behind it. how did you find the connector?
I have seen the dealer winch set up, the ARB bumper with husky
set up and the front receiver hitch set up.
The first two clearly demand taller or HD springs, as the car
sits lower because of the extra weight. The dealer set up
requires cutting into the bumper and spoiler to install if done
carelessly that looks bad. The ARB is beautiful, but big-it
affects the approach angle (so does the dealer set up) but at
least you can fit extra driving lights on your car, something the
dealer set up stops you from doing.
BTW the ARB set up doesn't stop the airbags from inflating,
you just have to hit something a little harder.... Last but not
least is the front receiver hitch plus warn 8000. this is my
choice (today at least). using that set up the car looks stock
except when needed. My only concern here is finding a way of
securing the winch inside the car as well as lifting 75 pounds of
winch while not putting my back out.
Has anyone tried to put the Camel style set up on a V8 Discovery?
     Regards
     Chris

Experience:

I have an ARB, it will accept a warn M8000 easily, it can be high
lifted figure about $1400+ including the winch.

You cannot easily put anything bigger in this bumper due to the
cleareances.... I have wedged a warn 9000i in there but had to cut
part of the front grill body moulding ( I had an M8000 but it "broke"
( its at warn now getting replaced ( I hope )! )
So I think I'm qualified in stating the above!

There are a few minor ARB bumber issues: Air damn ( fits but why use
it! ) bumper end caps have lights, toss em! they wont fit, fabricate
small ( painted ) plexiglass replacement pieces so front doesn't look
so ugly where end bumper end caps and sidelights were.

When I tow with the Range Rover I hook the safety chains to the hold down
tabs on the rear frame rails (my hold down tabs are held on with grade 8 nuts
and bolts). The safety chains on some trailers are not long enough to reach
the hooks and I have lengthened the chains in the past with those little
chain links that screw open and closed.

I just found out that the maximum weight rating for the chain links is less
than 1,000 lbs. (I am usually towing something that weighs more than 1,000
lbs.) If I use two or three of the add a links will that double or triple
the weight limit? Does any one know if they sell super strong chain links
that open and close? Should I just go out and buy a new long safety chain
with hooks on the end?

I hope I never need to use a safety chain, but if I do I want it to hold.

Hi folks,
Well, it seems that while I was away the communications lines into the
mail server went south again. I'm told that this time the service provicer
diagnosted and replaced the CSU (kind of like a modem for a T1 line [and you're
undoubtedly muttering "I didn't know Lucas made Telco Equipment"])

In any event, we, and our gracious hosts at playground.sun.com,
now seem to be back on the air.

Also please note that the article in _Land_Rover_Owner_International_
_Magazine_ (Issue 7, Summer 1996, pages 112-114) gives a soon to be obsolete
URL for the LRO pointer pages - the 'offical' url is at www.Land-Rover.Team.Net
and the shadow is now back at www.Senie.com (now on a 4xISDN line, courtesy
of my friend Dan (Senie) via high compression Proteon gateways.

Well, okay. So the acceleration was to reach a sphincter-tightening 30mph,

One bumper/winch arrangement that hasn't been mentioned is the one from
Safari Gard. I have no first-hand information on this arrangement (yet),
but the pictures I've seen show what appears to be a very beefy set up. The
A bar at the top of the bumper will accept three Hella lights. The winch is

I'm scheduled to get one of these the third week of July. If you can wait

Subject: Range Rover's debut at the OVLR Birthday Party

Hi

Two Range Rovers particpated in the offroad event at the 13th OVLR
party. The other Range Rover was fitted with a receiver mounted front winch.
I just came with rain-ready XMS's (read: barely road legal). There were
a couple Disco's about, including a dealer demo, but neither played. CSO's were
also represented by a D-90, who did a good job driving through the mud hole.

Getting there: Boston to Quebec: 5 hours. Vermont officers like hanging out
at open Weigh stations, and were up at St.Albans on the way up. Other than
that traffice seem to know they were not about.

Bill's travel corrally 13: don't enter via Quebec and tell them you're going to
Ottawa.
I had the plates for the '63 LR kicking about in the drivers map
packet, (still awaiting me to go to the RMV and trade 'em in for antique
plates) and

It seems the punter at the gate didn't like my bandana-headband, radar detector,
driving sunglasses, and choice of english vehicle and english speaking travel
destination, so he told me to 'pull over for an ID check', which I did.

They ran the license, and evidently didn't like what they saw, thinking that
I might be a road hazard. Concientious as they were, they started asking me
about my good driving record (or lack thereof).
Has your license been suspended ?
No, Mass never suspended that license.
Has any other state ever suspended your license ?
	No.
Have you ever been in front of a judge.
Yep, they charged me with trespassing for walking along the Providence
and Worcester rail way tracks, and fined me $50 [And kind as they
were they gave me a tour of the Worcester County lock-up, and let me
hang out in a cell there for a while, and fumble-fingers policeman
made sure he dropped my radar detector 4 foot onto the cement floor
'by accident' when tkaing my personal belongings for safe keeping.]

The woman took some notes and then set me out, now they decided to have a
look-see at my car. Now having a trunk full of tools is pretty normal for
most Land Rover owners, but some how, mine had mostly electrical tools, wiring
stuff, CB radio and car alarm bits, osram lamps, camping gear, etc. After going
through most of the stuff in the trunk (but not all) the inspector moved on to
the rest of the car. {I don't know what they would have thought had they
actually opened the box with the complete set of auto lock-out tools in it :-)}
[Bill's travel corallary: avoide Quebec when going to Ottawa.]

Sure enough the inspector was reasonably thorough, and though suspicious of
the rattle in my back door didn't tear it apart. Though when she came upon
the set of Ma. license tags for my '63 LR (hanging out in the RR until I
actually get to the RMV to trade them for Antique plates) and decided that
Canadian Customs ought to releive me of said registration tags, as they might
pose some hazard to the security of the residents of Quebec. So sure enough,
they bagged and tagged them and gave me a receipt. Onward to Silver Lake.
Five hours later (midnight now) I arrived and was pointed into the corner
of the field where 'those internet chaps were', of which it was said that
'between the lot of them they probably hadn't been laid in the last 20 years'.

Sure enough, everyone was there, some like me setting up tents by headlamps
and the rest drinking beer and telling tales.

Saturday started out with a bit of rain, and then the 'light' off road, a
morning-turned all day affair.

The LR owners were generally accepting of the RR. Dixon and a few other
OVLR folks said they'd never see one run off road before. For the afternoon
section, (The swivel ball guy) from Maine left his Polish girl friend with me
for the whole drive, in the hopes that "she'd have a good time and then be
willing to suffer with him in leaf sprung motors" later on.

So the first thing I did, was show 'em how to get a Range Rover
well and truely stuck in the mud (the first time they dragged me out with a
winch. The second time I aimed for the high ground on the left, but promptly
slid into the ruts and this time got out with a bit of rocking and reversed up
to dry ground. Soon after they shut down the mud hole and diverted most of
the pack to the other side. I don't know that any motor actually made it
through without some difficulty, a number had some self recovery or assistance.

The afternoon was a bit longer and we got to run about in forest and
beaver country. The beavers, busy as they were, were kind enough to engineer
some diversions for us from when the route was checked some weeks before
(The rain probably didn't hurt either.)

Most of the route was green lanes, with fresh foliage, the occasional
small puddle crossing and mucky bits where the trail ran too close to the
local water table or pond. There was also a good wade (washing some
of the mud off, testing door seals and filling Mike L's tool box).

Then upstream to what used to be a water tight beaver dam. There was
some concern if the verticle would interfere with the RR's air dam, but it
did not. I went straight for the middle and got hung up, the lads were ready
with the winch cable, but I just did a shunt and moved a few feet over
to the right where the the exit was more gradual, the footing was firm, both
in the stream and on the embankment, so the real trick was the tight turning
required once on the dry ground.

IT was all good fun for all, and in the end the RR was muddy up over
the top of the bonnet, had algae all across the front, a plasticly deformed
nearside step, and mud caked front brakes (which required cleaning early
in the trip home, as a pebble wedged it self between the back plate
and the rotor).

The auction saw a number of quality items go up for sale at reasonable prices.
At the auction at the end, the lads were egging me on to bid for the
'My other car is a Range Rover' bumper stickers, but it was much more fun
watching them bid it down to nothing.

Another 11 hours back (with the stop to clean the mud off the brakes early
on, and a side trip back to Canadian Customs at the Vermont border [and
explaining it all to US Customs was fun too!]), it was a long way off
but well worth the drive.

See ya all soon, when we go down to Maine for Owl's head.

    Cheers,

Busy, busy, busy!

I was just at Safari Gaurd this weekend! I got ARB Lockers not the bumper ( I
already have to much invested in the ARB bumper/winch setup so its
last on my list... ( I will get a SG rear bumper though! )

While I was there I took pictures of Greg's ( Safari Guard ) picture
album with my digital camera! The pictures came out great! I will be
setting up a branch on my WEB server to house some Safari Gaurd
stuff! Pictures of the bumper are included... I will keep you folks
posted!

PS: I got a drop suspension kit on the Disco.... You would not
believe the wheel travel I get now!!!!! ( I have longer travel HD old
man emu springs, they get get used all the way! its awsum! ) regular
springs will work great also!

I will post some incredible pictures of that shortly!!!

I have the same problem as others on this list with the syncro going into
third gear. My problem is that this is the second transmission in this
lemon since I bought the damn thing in September, and the dealer says that
it won't do anything about the synco problem. LR Canada couldn't possibly
care less, so it looks like I am stuck with the syncro problem until
something more serious fails in the transmission. This shouldn't stretch
my patience too much, since, being a Discovery, the transmission should
fail again any time now. (Maybe I can get another new transmission when
they put the new engine in. My present engine is losing oil so fast that
I have bought stock in Petro-Canada.

Hello,
     I have a 1985 V8 petrol/carb RR. Recently it's started to leak from the
rad.

On previous holidays the beast has overheating (needle wrapped around the
end stop - well into the red anyway). I obtained a replacement rad, through
mail-order, but I'm not sure if it's the correct one for use with
air-con....

How does one tell ?
