Attended the grand opening of Land Rover Peabody last week and noted =
that they *ALREADY* had a 1997 J**P Wrangler sitting in the used car =
area!

Anecdotally, I recall that it was well over a year before LRMW saw its =
first D90 traded back - and it was traded back towards another Land =
Rover!

The best (in my humble opinion) to be said about the new Wrangler is =
that it's a great improvement over the old one. I noted that 4-Wheeler =
magazine rated it's RTI at over 500 - compared with the old one at only =
340! Interesting to note was that the old CJ-7 had a best RTI of around =
460! So much for progress!

I checked one out at the J**P dealer across the street (convenient!) =
from LRMW and found that the new dash (lifted straight out of a Dodge =
Shadow!) not too utilitarian (some will like it). I still prefer the =
funky old S3 dash of the Defender... That gaping cavern of a parcel =
shelf will hold a week's laundry, the research materials for a Master's =
thesis, AND a sixpack!

I find it historically significant that, in an apparent reversal, it is =
now J**P that appears to be *copying* the Land Rover!! Well done, lads!

cheers

Subject: Mag articles-old RR, D90 v. Wrangler

Saw a new sport utility magazine while grocery shopping at Kroger last
night. I think it was called "Open Road" and it had 2 articles about
Rovers.

The first was a comparison of the D90 SW to the 97 Wrangler. It said
that off road the two vehicles matched up point for point. I'm sure =
that
J**p paid them off :) Any advantage the D90 may have had was made
up for by Wranglers limited slip rear diff. They made a big deal about =
the
wading ability of both, noting that the Wrangler was water tight with
water almost to its windows while the D90 "drains well." On road and
as a daily driver they definitely preferred the Wrangler. Considering =
the
costs they said overall the wrangler won. UHHGGG

The second article was on the surprising affordability of older Range
Rovers. (something I'm very familiar with). Pretty good article all =
told
with a detailed list of changes each year (maybe good to compare with
the FAQ list) and a detailed list of items to watch for when purchasing. =

Also listed common repair costs. Noted that the RRs depreciate much
faster than many similar vehicles. Not bad reading for a general 4x4
mag.

Four wheeler magazine also had its best buy (bargain) competition. The
Toy Cruiser won the luxury catagory. However, one judge voted for
the RR because it was the standard by which all other vehicles are
judged and would be a bargain at any price. :)

I also found an old Disco review which mentioned the 4x4 XPC tires. It
said they stuck well to everything, except mud, which stuck to them.

And, yes, I did actually remember to get some groceries for my poor
pregnant wife. She always wonders why I take so long to do the
shopping.

Subject: Steel Wheels for Disco

I see that the nifty alloy wheels on my Disco are quite costly. My offroad
forays are starting to cause minor damage to them. My Disco does daily
commute duty (90 miles total per day) and goes offroad every 2 or 3
weekends. I'd like to keep the factory tires on the alloys and buy a set of
steel rims for some new offroad tires. I'm looking at BFG MT 235/85R16 to go
with an OME coil/shock set on order - yes, I will need to bend rear corner
of fender lips.

A) Atlantic British shows a "Discovery Black Steel Wheel" (NTC5193PM) at
$180+ apiece - Ouch!

B) They also show a neat looking bullet-hole steel wheel (Land Rover Steel
Wheel, 7x16 (3043)) at $100 apiece.

C) Rovers North shows a "Steel Road Wheel 6x16" (ANR1534PM) for $110 apiece.

The factory wheels are 7x16. BFG recommends 6 or 7 inch width for the
235/85R16 MTs.

1. What other rims are available for the Discovery, where, what price?
2. Will rims B and C fit the Discovery (proper offset, etc.)?
3. Which rim size is best from a clearance standpoint? Would guess the 6"
might be a hair better.
4. Is anyone familiar with rim B? I like the way it looks, classier than the
basic black rim.

I stopped in to a nearby Jeep dealer to see the new TJ wrangler and the
best part of the experience was to watch the salesman deflate when he
asked: "Well, what are you driving now?" me: "a Land Rover" him: "oh."
me: (big smiley :-)

While the coil spring suspension is step in the right direction (as LR
figured out, what 15, 20, 25 yrs ago?!) What impressed me the most with
the wrangler was how "cheap" and "lightweight" the undercarriage looked.
I'm spoiled, I suppose with the massiveness of the LR's undercarriage,
frame, radius arms, etc. which are big forged steel arms compared with
the jeep (wrangler or cherokee) suspension arms & brackets which are
stamped sheet metal. Granted the Wrangler has only 2/3 the GVW of a LR,
but the springs and suspension arms looked more like those of a toy (or
import subcompact) than something I'd expect to see on a trail rig.
Lot's of aftermarket opportunities there.

Subject: rollover repair

I'm still struggling along with my restoration of a 90 RR county that had
suffered a rollover . The question I have relates to whether anyone else has
undertaken a similar task and what advice the list might have regarding
what I should do or check out regarding the mechanicals While they are
great vehicles, I don't think they're designed to run upside down. Kevin
Kelly suggested changing all fluids and filters which sounds logical but
besides that is there anything else recommended?
Also regrets to Tony regarding Annabelle. It's amazing how quickly the
scavengers (myself included ) show up when there's word of a dead rover.
Suggestion for Tony on the replacement ,bend over and carefully inspect the
rear wheel wells .When I took the carpeting out of my 90 with 65,000mi on
it I discovered they were completely rusted through and even though I live
in Michigan (the road salt capital of the world) I wouldn't have expected
rust through on a 6 year old vehicle . So while the skin may be aluminum,
the inner fender is steel.

Subject: RE: 97 Wrangler

Yes it's interesting to check out the new Wrangler! Personally I think
Jeep has done a very good job considering their mass market target, and
they took more notice of their owners than Land Rover ever did or seems
to do, interviewing many Jeep trail riders to see what they wanted.

In the current issue of Open Road there is an interesting comparison test
between the new Wrangler and the Defender. The writers were, like many car
journalists, fairly clueless about how the respective 4WD systems work,
but the comparison which obviously included a reasonable amount off-road
was interesting nonetheless.

Their verdict was that the Jeep is the equal of the Land Rover off road
and a lot better on road.

I would dispute that finding of course, but I still think Land Rover will
need to watch over its shoulder as a wide array of SUVs gradually catch up
with our off-road performance while continuing to leave us for dead on the
pavement. No Land Rover model has made significant advances in off-road
performance for several years (eg since the introduction of air suspension
and electronic traction control in 1993), and if they want to maintain
their lead they would be well advised to do so.

Just a few of my ravings injected into the conversation to spark debate...!!

The lowest cost approach I know of is the hidden winch mount from Ramsey;
they make one to fit the RR for under $150, and the Ramsey 8,000lb winch
is also inexpensive compared to others.

At the other end of the scale is the Great Divide accessory costing about
$2,400.

In between are a number of others such as ARB winch bumpers (about $700
plus winch).

Hello all, I posted this problem previously as a "running hot when using
the A/C" problem, but more specifics have developed. In addition to
running hot (using the gauge) it seems that often times with the A/C on
it has a hard time idling after I come to a stop light. Then, if I don't
give it some gas and let it die, it has a hard time starting and takes
from 10 to 30 seconds of cranking to get it going again. After sitting
at a light for a minute or so, it seems to be normal and I don't need to
touch the gas to keep it idling.

Someone mentioned a fuel temperature sensor on the fuel rail, and it
seems to me that it could also be a fuel pressure problem as well??? Or
a solenoid that bumps up the throttle with the A/C on???

Anyone else experience this or have any ideas what it might be? I live
"at the gates of hell" (Phoenix Arizona) where it is usually well over
110 degrees in the summer (now) so running without the A/C is NOT an
option!

Thanks for any input you might have...

In another article in the issue, a reporter had the opportunity to drive the
Rubicon Trail in a stock vehicle of his choice. What vehicle did he choose?
A '94 D90. :-)
He was amazed at the D90's incredible performance given that it was
completely stock. I bet the Wrangler/D90 comparison would have reached
different conclusions if this reported had been involved.

Subject: Strange Black Wires

OK, last night I was poking around under the hood (oops er uh Bonnet)
and noticed several (3 at last count) strange black wires. One of these
ran along side the wire harness leading to the Idle Air Control Valve,
at the back of the plenum, and simply formed a hook shape and stopped.
The other 2 wires are anchored at the back of the drivers side cylinder
head. They too form a hook shape and are connected to nothing in the
engine bay. I traced all 3 back as far as I could see, one disappeared
under the bulkhead beneath the drivers side, the other 2 went off
somewhere on top of the tranny. I was tired and it was late so I
stopped tracing the wires there. These are shiny black wires maybe
3/16" in diameter with a metal core. The hooks in the ends do not bend
easily. Anybody know what these are? Anybody else have them?

Subject: Tow hooks and steering protectors

I just installed a Force Ten steering protector on my '95 Disco (purchased
from BritPac). It is a fairly nice arrangement of 8mm drilled aluminum
plate and triangularly-shaped painted-steel mounting brackets. The
brackets mount to the lower bumper bolts in the front, and further back on
the frame rails to the rear (right side to available hole, left side to
bolt holding part of front steering/suspension). Installation was easy,
although the lack of instructions led to a false start or two before
getting the job done.

The one problem I have with the installation is that it required me to
remove the front recovery loop. Bracket, loop, and bumper won't all fit.
So does anyone know if the bracket itself can be used as a recovery point?
All bolts are grade 5, and the bracket is beefy but of unknown metal (I'm
assuming iron since it is painted black). Put another way, would you
assist in a recovery with your vehicle using this as an attachment point?

disappeared into a stream: we had this

As we exit the other side up a trail which had

These sound like wire joins. I've seen many Lucas wiring setups where
two wires are joined together and capped so that you wind up with what
looks like a crimp or deadend in the wiring. I don't have a diagram to
look up the exact spot, but that's my guess.

Sean,
you think that two wires are actually joined here and that the 'joint'
was brought out so that one could easily tap or monitor the wires? I
guess I could by that? I'm gonna trace 'em back and see where they go
and then see if I can find them on the wiring diagram.

The following two items I am sure of:

1 - there will be more than 200 units.

2- Base price will certainly be less than 37,000.

Don't know about the price, but the rest is wrong, but then

I got Rovers 4 North black wheels ( like the spare tire rim but black ) for
~$550 ( this may have been a special??? ) Put 235/85R16 BFG Trac
Edges on.

I can't speak for the other rims.. I liked the black as it
highlighted all the black body armor on the vehicle ( ARB and SG
stuff )

This is a trivial question, but I am curious if any one knows what the little
black plastic pieces do that are on the newer Range Rover (1990 on) and Disco
front door "C" Pillars (the pillar that runs between the mirrors and the top
of the front doors)? I was in a friend's '92 when I first noticed them,
since then I have noticed that all Discos and newer RR's have them.

I checked with ARB on getting the side "ROO" bars for the disco

Heres what they said ( roughly ):

They only would get shipped over here in containers of 100 so we are

My kids asked me that and I told them they helped guide the window into

Subject: A/C troubles

I am posting this for the benefit of a friend whose 90 RR (US Specs) won't
keep his commute cool. Maybe there's something common I can help him with and
avoid a big bill. The vents on the dash don't open at any setting, and vacuum
is going to the line that goes through the firewall. Or should I say vacuum
is coming from the enginex Anyway, are there any common probs we should look
at first. Tom bought this truck (I call em all trucks) sans any service
history. This is just the latest problem. I told him to get a pith helmet and
khaki shirt to wear while he drives to/from work, arm out the window, stiff
upper lip, sweaty derriere, and all that. Hope the RRO list can help!

Hmm...I'm afraid that I can't be of much help to you on #2, and 3, but I
think that I might be able to start the brain for #1........Although we own
a Disco, it suffered the same problem from the first day of cold
weather...It turns out that the bushing in the steering column doesn't like
cold weather.....(since when do they have a mind of their own?? oh, dear
me...I forgot, this is a rover!)

In any event, the dealer did his little fixing-up and the steering doesn't
squeak a bit...The factory has some new bushings for the column........

Now, I don;t know if the RR is the same......I'd suspect
it..........(insert help here from other rro's)

Happy Rovering!

I have an 85 model, without extra plastic bits. When its wet, getting into
the beast requires some cleaver movements and impeccable timing if I am to
avoid the continuous drips from the roof gutter outlet.

Perhaps your additional plastic removes the need for these acrobatics and
wet knees...

From: "David C. McCormack" <dmccorma@execpc.com>, on 6/26/96 8:17 AM:
Just received "Land Rover Adventures III" video tape from Land Rover of
North America. The tape shows the U.S. tryouts for the '95 Camel Trophy,
segments of the '95 Trophy itself, a Land Rover sponsored 24 hour ski race
in Colorado, and invites owners to come on one of the Land Rover driving
school adventures (recall recent traffic regarding the mailing advertising
the adventures and showing a Disco with an unusual contoured roof rack).
Anyway, I purchased a '95 Disco and received a tape on Discoveries from
Land
Rover as well as this tape, unsolicited and free. Having watched the tape
this morning, which is full of great footage showing Discos doing it all, I
am finding it difficult to sit here in the office and look at my Disco just
sitting in the parking lot:^( I've got to plan an adventure . . . soon!

Barnett,

You make me feel like the kind of guy that talks about IT all the
time but never actually does it . . . :^)

Yours is a standard transmission, right? That's what I have. I don't have
any info yet, but I'm going in this morning to get the skinny. I'll post as
soon as I know.

By the way, Tom. That had to be your Rover parked at Frye's in Palo Alto
yesterday during the lunch hour, no? It was the first time I'd seen it
since you added all the toys. It looks ready for action. I'll bet you get
some interesting looks from the mallwagon drivers.

Cheers!
John

My rattle under the passenger footwell turned out
to be the cat. conv., although I heard it at idle alot
too.

Sure wish I had your warranty.
