They are being built. I think there was some holdup in getting the
extra-heavy thread. The guy's name is Jack Walter. I'll try to dig up
his phone number and pass it along...

Dave,

>time but never actually does it . . . :^)

Just kidding around with ya :>. Actually I want you to get out there and
have some fun. I know how you feel...looking at you're Rover sitting in the
parking lot when YOU KNOW it wants to be offroad! Besides, I love to hear
about others off road adventures! Keeps my day at work from being to
boring.

Don't forget how much fun the clean up is! Get all that mud washed out from
the many hidden areas of you're undercarrage, and don't forget to pull all
of those sticks and leaves out of your brakes :>

Cheers,
Barnett

Hi All,

I know that a general discussion of synthetic lubricants v. dino
juice has run several times and the consensus seems to be that the
synthetics are a "good thing".

Well, what I really want to know is _specfically_ what have folks
used to replace the transfer/auto-trans/axle/swivel housing fluids
with. My 30K maintenence is coming up and I want to start
gathering the required fluids, filters, etc.

BTW, we're talking the Disco here folks!

TIA!

I'm using Amsoil synthetics for everything; motor oil, transfer box,
transmission, axle diffs, swivel balls. I love it. Others I know of are
using Mobil 1, and Castrol syntec.

I thought so. With some of the chats from ya I knew it wasn't 3". Sounds
like the Moab fun I had a few weeks ago! I thought I was gonna roll near
the end of the Moab Rim trail. Dropped the left front off a 4' ledge into a
bottomless hole and started a VERY slow teeter over. My wife and I both
leaned away from the role and the vehicle came back down. I couldn't look
to see what the situation was without starting the roll (potential) again.
There was no going backwards with the angle I was at, so the only thing to
do was a deliberate forward drive out. When I did this the vehicle moved
through the hole and the front left caught the face of the hole and alas,
everything was fine. Yes the right front wheel stand on the way out was
spectacular! Just goes to show, had I foot scouted the ledge prior to
attempting the move, I never would have been in that situation to begin with.

Hey, maybe we could talk John P. into getting our fun picks on the net! Hey
John, ya listening?

At speed (e.g going down the highway), the ariflow around a car has a
tendency to pull the top of a partially-raised side window out, so
that it won't line up with the groove in the top of the window
frame. This little plastic piece guides the top of the window back
into the groove when fully raising the window.

excellent choice. I have had absolutely no problems with mine, and am
very, very happy with it - in fact it is probably the first or second
best car I have ever owned.

Remember to follow the maintenance schedule though, and I do change my
oil and filter every 3k miles. . .

As for problem 1, yes it is common, involves lubrication and.or bushing -
simple dealer fix. I have not had either problem 2 or 3 and wish you the
best.

My first contribution to the list - hope it's right ! If the "wires" are
what I think they are, they are actually the ends of the breather pipes to
the front and rear axles and to the gearbox. You should be able to see the
other end on the top centre of each axle.

I just read a "Michelin Marketing Bulletin" that said that the XMS 244 (the
OEM tire on all '88-'95 Range Rovers) was last produced in October '95, but
that a small number of the tires will be reserved "for OE replacement
purposes - one tire at a time". Michelin says that the new 4x4 XPC 205/80R16
is compatible with the XMS 244 but, they cannot be mixed on the same axle.

Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 10:21:20 -0700

Lately, while driving "Willy" around I've noticed a clunk in the
drive-line especially when decellerating or while accellerating then
letting the gas off abruptly. I told the dealer this and it sounded like
a Tech Bulletin item to him so we looked it up and it turns out to be a
"clonk" not a clunk (what to I know, I'm not a mechanic, anyway).
Apparently one of the gears in the Transfer Case (or thereabouts) wears
the spines causing more than normal play in the drive train. The part
must be ordered, so it'll be back to the shop again soon.

Is it me, or is this (CSO) list starting to sound more and more like the
LRO, a.k.a. Series list with all the leaks, gearbox, electrical and axle
problems. It would seem the CSO's and the LRO's have more in common than
not :-)

Happy Trails!

Having just had to take my entire dash apart to replace the heater core,
perhaps I can offer some ideas on this.

You might check that the vacuum switch is working on the left hand side
of the heater (you'll have to take some of the trim panels off to check
any of the possible causes). The vacuum goes through a solenoid switch
that either allows or doesn't allow the fresh air intake flap to be
opened. Without taking anything apart, you could try switching from fresh
air to recirc on the controls, and if the vacuum controlled flap is
working you'll hear it.

There is another flap on the outlet to the fascia vents; this is
mechanically controlled by the lever that you turn the fascia vents on
and off with.

If the a/c is the thing that's not working, neither of these is likely to
be the problem -- and I don't understand what it means about the vents
"not opening".

Glad to delve further into it with more info

Cheers

The real, and only difference between the LRO and the CSO lists IMHO are
the warrantys for the newer Rovers. I think I'll break down and buy that
extended warranty for mine. Only one (MAJOR) problem and it will be well
worth the investment. :<

I've had bad experiences with Paul Miller LR. In the past I've asked them to
look at particular problems and they didn't--they just marked it "OK" on the
service sheet. One time they actually left a greasy rag on the engine when
they were done. Luckily, I opened up the hood when I got home and saw the
rag; otherwise, it could have started a fire. :-o (This experience is what
finally prompted me to install a fire extinguisher.) I've since moved to
using LR Paramus (Prestige) and have had good experiences so far, although
I've met folks who have had problems with them too. Why is it so hard to
find a decent dealer--one that knows what its doing and doesn't have some
sort of attitude.

I'd say more similar than not!

Similarities:
Leaks, (oil, transmission, x-case, diffs, swivel balls, rain, wind)
slow acceleration, bad gas milage, aluminum body panels, steel box
frame, heavy duty components, Lucas demons, thin gauge wire used, poor
aerodynamics, expensive parts, squeaky steering wheel, and MORE!

Differences:
Springs, air conditioning, computer, automatic trans (some models),
uh... I can't think of any more for the moment...

I never thought we should have split the list... but then what do I
know? I couldn't tell a "clunk" from a "clonk."

What's the deal on the extended warranty? I bought my '94 D90 used in 1995.
It had the remainder of the original warranty 3 yr/42,000 mi. Is it possible
to buy the extended warranty at any time, or must the decision have been
made at original purchase? How long does the extended warranty last? Does
anyone know if a second owner can buy it? Thanks for any thoughts.

I'd heard you had up to about 2,000 mi before it expired to extend it.
It just gets more and more expensive, the longer you wait. With
warranty claims what they are, I'm sure the ex-maint price will just
keep going up.

OK, last night I was poking around under the hood (oops er uh Bonnet)
and noticed several (3 at last count) strange black wires. One of these
ran along side the wire harness leading to the Idle Air Control Valve,
at the back of the plenum, and simply formed a hook shape and stopped.
The other 2 wires are anchored at the back of the drivers side cylinder
head. They too form a hook shape and are connected to nothing in the
engine bay. I traced all 3 back as far as I could see, one disappeared
under the bulkhead beneath the drivers side, the other 2 went off
somewhere on top of the tranny. I was tired and it was late so I
stopped tracing the wires there. These are shiny black wires maybe
3/16" in diameter with a metal core. The hooks in the ends do not bend
easily. Anybody know what these are? Anybody else have them?

The price is rather high about $1,600 if I'm not mistaken for the LR
extended warranty, again a bargain if you blow a diff, break an axle, lose
your transmission, etc. There are different extended warranty options you
can purchase. I believe the longest warranty extends up to 100K miles but
I'm not sure.

No mine is automatic ( which is why I ask ( I don't think there could
be a problem with a syncro in an automatic ( at least that can be
fixed easily ! ) ) )

Subject: Re: Problem using A/C on '87 RR

Dave,

it was me that suggested the fuel temp sensor after your original post. Given
your additional symptoms I would check 2 additional things:

1. The ECU does have an input to it that tells it when the A/C is on - check the
wiring to see if this is working. The diagrams are in the workshop manual.

2. The idle speed is conrtrolled by the ECU sending signals to the stepper motor
at the rear odf the plenum chamber - its possible that this is sticking.
Disconnect it, remove it and give it a liberal spraying with WD40 and
reassemble.

While you're at it check all vacuum lines for leaks its possible that you have a
problem all the time that the ECU is compensating for but is made worse with the
A/C load. If you haven't already serviced the crankcase ventilation circuit this
is a good place to start - the T-piece perishes and the small vacuum tube to the
plenum chamber from the T-piece may be perished. To find the T-piece I'm talking
about follow the tube from the flame trap that is screwed into the front of the
right hand side valve cover.

Mike

Subject: Extended Warranty

I am in the process of trading in the 90RR on an SE7. From what the dealer said,
the extended warrantee is bumper to bumper 7yr/100,000 miles. It can be
purchased up until 1yr/10,000miles. The only risk was price increase from $1800.
Also they said there was a $100 deductible that would be waived if I had the
service done with them. I am very likely going to do it after the amount of
money I have put into the RR.

made at original purchase? How long does the extended warranty last? Does
anyone know if a second owner can buy it? Thanks for any thoughts. <<

Chris,
Are you sure that the rear diff is vented to the engine compartment? I was
talking to Jim Mitchell at Rovers North yesterday and he told me that
surprisingly the rear diff breather only vents under the body and not up to
the engine compartment like the front diff! After several water crossings
he said that the oil was very milky in the rear diff only. He was looking
into extending the vent out to the engine with the others. Can you confirm
this?

The rear diffs on all D90's I've seen (94-95) have breathers which do
NOT go all the way the engine compartment. I'd be surprised if some
did. You can and should extend the tubing to the engine compartment or
above to prevent your diff from sucking water when the hot diff hits
cold water. If you haven't done this and have had your car offroad,
have your dealer look at and consider replacing the rear wheel bearings
and definately change out your diff fluid. Trust me, both of my
bearings are TOAST after 20k miles (only 4k of mine).

that that was a no-no...Hmmm no idea why.....they said dino juice for ZF
only..... oh well....

Since you are talking about NJ LR dealers, let me add a few cents about
Schneider & Nelson in W Long Branch NJ.

For the past several years, whenever we visited my folks, I would drop by
and look over the current models and pick up a brochure. They were always
friendly and happy to let me examine the vehicles. On most of the recent
visits, Linda Savino was the sales person that answered my questions.

I do not know how service is there since our RR is not the vehicle we take
down there.

Last Saturday they had two '92 RRs out front asking in the mid $20s along
with two D90 soft tops.

Subject: New to this list...

Hi,

I'm new to this list. I got an '88 Range Rover a few months back and
wanting to learn some more about them, in the event I need to work on
it.

I can only find many parts at my local Land Rover dealer in San Jose,
CA. They are friendly and helpful, but prices are not great.

For instance, I bought a service manual ($133) and they charge about
$57 for a binder to hold this peculiar UK 4 hole punch...I did buy the
binder because I wanted to be able to flip through it easily, but
wasn't happy about it.

When I bought my 'rover, one of the attractions was that you can buy
parts ANYWHERE in the world. Well, you can, but you just can't find a
lot of them in where I'm at...;-) Oh, if you wanted to buy the parts
in some third world country, you could probably. Try and buy them in
Silicon Valley though...;-)

So I go to get the brakes worked on and naturally they can't get
rotors, I have to end up buying them from the dealer anyway. I don't
mind getting parts at the dealer, like the rotors seemed like well
built items.

Are there places in the states that will do mail order and have better
prices than the dealer, or is the dealer about the best for some stuff
?

I don't work on my cars too much yet, but thinking about doing some
repairs when needed on the 'rover, hence why I bought the service
manual.

I bought my 'rover to haul a boat with, and like it a lot. Although I
know there will be repairs that are needed, it runs well.

It has 90K miles on it, anything I should look for at that point ?

Subject: check your nuts!
Date: Fri, 28 Jun 96 10:44:00 gmt

Coming to work this morning I pulled over to help a fellow RR who had a flat
tyre on the rear nearside.

In fact he hadn't a flat tyre, he had NO tyre at all !!

As he came round a right hand bend, the rear wheel came off and overtook
him. Four of the wheel nuts had fallen off at the bend, the fifth had
snapped off with the stud. The tyre had pushed out the rear panel and the
stone guard was bent
around the disc. Other than that, the wheel was undamaged and the brakes,
axle etc O.K.

3weeks prior, a new tyre was fitted. I assume the nuts were not correctly
tightened...

Is this very unusual...
/Gary

Tom,
Thanks so much for posting the Safari Gard pics to you're web page.
I have been waiting patiently for my order for almost three months now,
drooling over some of the pictures Greg had sent me. WOW, some of the
pictures on you're web page show some incredible axle droop/articulation.
Are these rigs running Greg's rear suspension drop kit?

I just received my diff gards and air rock sliders yesterday. The build
quality looks very high. Unfortunately Greg didn't send me any of the air
lines, fittings, or HDW to install the sliders! :<

Have to call him back today. I wanted to get this stuff installed for the
Downeast rally in Maine 7/5/96. Other good news is now that Greg has
cleared out some of the rigs he was working on in his shop, my Superwinch
bumper/brushbar setup will/should finally be finished and off to the
powdercoaters by the end of next week.
Cheers,
Barnett

From: rvirzi@gte.com (Robert A. Virzi)
Subject: Change in LRNA warranties TODAY

I just got off the phone with Bill Frank of LRWM. He said that ITT used to
write LR extended warranties but the sold the business to a German Bank.
The bank re-rated LR and is saying a 7/100 warranty will go to $3000. Not
good. So LRNA (I assume it isn't metrowest) is moving to CNA, which is
Continental, I think. They will be offering a 7/85 warranty in the $1800
range.

Now, here is the freaky part. Bill said today is the last day he can write
ITT policies. He said these guys are good to deal with, and the service
department likes them. The ITT policy is identical to the LR basic
warranty, bumper-to-bumper and transferrable. It isn't clear that the CNA
policies will follow this path. Plus, ITT is $100 cheaper and 15k longer.

Anybody got any ideas? I'm severely tempted to jump on it today. Does
this sound like a line (a really doubt it)? Anybody got experience with
CNA on car waranties?

Thanks, and hurry!
-Bob

Subject: Land Rover Quality

It looks like Land Rover has not made "quality job one". The Range Rover was
the worst of all cars/trucks sold in the U.S. in the J.D. Powers 1996 survey
of initial quality with 216 problems per 100 vehicles, the Disco was 6th
worst with 176 problems Lexus was best (and second best and third best) with
45 problems per 100 vehicles. The Ford Explorer and F series trucks had 104
and 114 problems per 100. Believe it or not Jag was under 100 with 94
problems per 100 cars sold.

All this talk about a short rear diff breather has given me a Saturday
project. Has anyone extended their breather pipe? I remember some posts from
Disco folks a while back. What kind of pipe did you use? How did you connect
it to the existing pipe? Is there a good place to run the pipe in the back
of a Defender instead of having to run it all the way to the engine
compartment? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
