cool thanks.

one more question, does the original woodhead shock limit the extention or
compression of the defender? my original set conked out only after a year
of use - very little off road.

For those who are awaiting the survey results with baited breath, there's
still a few stragglers sending their results in, so I'm holding back until
they're all in.

Hi guru's

With all this lift and castor angle talk, can anyone detail the effect of
incorrect castor angle on steering or handling performance of a rangie?
I am currently gettiong a vibration from the front at a particular highway
speed if I hit a bump.
The radius arm bushes, panhard rod bushes front springs and shocks have all
been replaced. The NRC4234 and 4304 springs have given the front a 2" lift.
I haven't replaced the steering damper yet .... <g>.

I can't comment on the effects of incorrect castor angles but vibration
after hitting a bump
usually means the steering damper needs replacing.

Yes. The shocks are basically what limit the axle articulation. You can
fit slightly longer shocks without a problem.
OME and the Woodhead shocks are about the same length.
I was told that Bilstein are actually slightly shorter.
The longest Land Rover shocks are supposidly the Warn Blackdiamond shocks.

Because the top of the spring is held in by the weight of the vehicle and
the length of the shock, you can have problems with your spring poping out
at full articulation, if you use long(er) shocks.

Suspension systems like Rockware use ultra long shocks that allow the spring
to pop out and be guided back safely into place.

Safari Gard also uses very long shocks, but they also use longer springs,
and the springs are clamped into place at the top of the spring seat.

If you go to www.discoweb.org it has pictures of the different suspension
systems and contact #s. The Disco, Defender, and Rangie all have similar
suspensions.

For a relatively small amount of money you can fit Rockware spring guides,
Rockware shock mounts, longer brake lines and Rancho shocks and get a 100%
increase in artculation.

But...if you go to www.yellowdefender.com and read about the twist off,
articulation isn't everything...Depends what terrain you usually drive in.
I'm in the North East. I drive mainly on muddy forrest trails. So
articluation isn't my biggest concern.

Subject: RE: Brian's Hybrid project

Brian,

Land Rover World magazine had a 4 (or 5 or 3) issue series on building a
hybrid from the chassis up, email me off line if you want the issue
numbers. Putting a series body on a RR frame is essentially what a
hybrid is. Everything you want to do is possible. Hybrid builders say
estimate the cost to build one and then double that number. Also, do the
same for time. My suggestion (dream maybe!) would be to stay with the
100" wheelbase. Good luck!
