A fellow cixen posted this message and I thought there may be someone 
here who can make an offer of help.

Steve Rawlings

History of cattle drovers. Before the railways came there was trade
in driving stock from Northern England and Southern Scotland to the
growing manufacturing towns. Are there any books or other sources
that describe the trade, trails, lifestyle etc.

 Be glad of any leads.

The best book, and really quite good, is The Drovers, by Bonser, long
out of print, but often in libraries.

He did his reserach with nothing published to help him. he has big gaps
(only to be expected) and a few questionable comments, but generally
most excellent stuff.

Also The Drove Roads of Southern Scotland by Haldane. May have been
repub by David & Charles.

Pub names are a good clue:

Tam O-Shanter
Black Ox
Chequers
The Drovers
Robin Hood

almost always on a drovers' route.

On a different note we really need a newsgroup. 

rec.motorcycles.dirt

is mostly about people who rush about in circles too fast seeing everything
but really nothing. 

I don't know how to set up a USENET system though. How about

rec.green.lanes

wreck green lanes geddit?!

or rec.motorcycles.trails

may get the interest worldwide. The Yanks have similar opposition to us;
Sierra Club etc. I suppose it may miss out our 4WD brethren who need those
2 extra wheels and ALL connected to the engine to help them from toppling
over when they stop ;-) a bit like my 3 year old.

oops sorry didn't mean it lads.

I reckon that we would have to use the .uk hierachy and miss out the 
yanks altogether. As for setting it up, it is fairly straightforward 
really. Anyone want the info. I will mail it!

Subject: Green Lane Restoration Day

Hi all

Just in case any of you are scratching around for something to do on Sunday:-

Have you organised anything for this weekend?  If not feel free to join us on
the Drove Road, Dorking TQ 107494 at 10am Sunday.  The Ranger for the area will
be showing us what needs doing (undergrowth clearance & stumping) and will be
supplying some tools. Bring your own if you have any though.

I will be camping at about the same spot on the Saturday night if you are
interested - Ranger happy, plenty of firewood etc.

I will put together a Barbeque for the Sunday lunchtime so bring food and drink
for that as well.

Subject: BOAT 334 Puttenham

Hi all

Some of you may remember my last visit to this lane.

I thought I'd have another look - with a camera this time.

Turned up at the end of the lane at about 2pm on Sunday afternoon.  As last
time, the end of the lane was partially blocked by a large mound of earth.  This
did not concern me much (although I will be reporting it to the council) but I
did remove the top layer of the mound (a large piece of dry ski slope matting)
as I felt that this could snag the underside of my vehicle causing problems.

A resident's car was also parked partially obscuring the end of the lane.

It was while we were removing the ski-slope matting that the residents of the
houses at the end of the lane came out again to hassle us.

It started with the 'oh that lane is blocked up now'  progressed through the
'you aren't allowed to do that - I'm going to call the police' and ended up with
a couple of old ladies shouting and swearing at us for destroying the
countryside, running over children etc.etc.

All the while the three of us (all in my vehicle) calmly explained our position
whilst pointing out the benefits of retaining BOAT status on roads like this.

One of my party was drinking beer - at that one of the old hags said 'ooh he's
drinking and driving' - so I pointed out my flask of coffee.

One of the younger ladies said she was a Bridleways officer for the BHS and she
doesn't think that vehicles should be allowed etc.. - I asked whether she
supported the rights of Carriage Drivers within the BHS - she went quiet.

One of them said 'why don't you just go to another lane instead of this one' -
so I Nimby'd her.

One of them pointed to a couple of Southern Rover Owners Club stickers I had on
the car and said that she would complain to them.   I told her that I was no
longer in the SROC,  and even if I was so what?

One of them owned the car that was partially blocking the end of the lane.  None
of then would admit to owning it so I took a photo.  I will send it to the
Police when I get the film developed and ask them to contact the owner to make
sure that they do not block the lane again.

One of them was a solicitor.  I bet he fought tooth and nail to get the path
reclassified as a BW or FP during the reclassification process - and failed -
shame:-)

I'm sure there are a lot of points that I missed what with me being a novice RoW
rep and all, but I'm getting there.

And to cap it all, to ensure that we did not damage the road, one of them was
despatched to follow us down the road on foot with a camera. (about a mile).  I
took it easy and kept stopping to let him catch up, and even offered him some
coffee when we stopped for ten minutes while my engine cooled down (oops did I
forget to turn the electric fans on then tee hee.)

As I said last time there is a tree root half way down the lane which can cause
a problem.  I will be reporting that to the council as soon as the photos come
back.

When we got to the end I did consider turning round and following him back up
the lane but we were running out of time for the day.

If the lane was damaged by over use - then I would have been prepared to turn
around and look elsewhere but the fact is that this lane is not properly used
because of the obstructions.

If any of you fancy a peek the road runs between SU923476 and SU912473. Do the
lane this way round as the mound at the end could cause headaches from the other
way.

If you want company feel free to give me a shout.

Looking at a couple of old maps I've got I suspect the lane used to continue
eastwards so I'll make a note to check that out next time I'm at the records
office.
