From: glenn.rees@PAREURO.COM Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 8:53:46 +0000 Subject: Lane clearing :- Drove Road, Surrey Et Al A good day was had by all, I arrived late at about 10:30, only to find a group of overnight hangovers wandering around a fire, but we were soon pressed into action buy the local Surrey Ranger, Jim Storra. The day was spent replacing posts that had been removed by less scrupulous off roaders, and winching large tree trunks into position to stop people driving of the track. I would like to thank Richard Brownlee for organising the day, maybe we could do this on a more regular basis, as we used to a few years ago, especially since the Ranger is keen. Perhaps another time when the numbers are some many it might > be better to spend longer clearing more over grown / obstructed lanes? Adrian, and Tim, Andy, Dale, This is a problem when the group gets too large. (and most of the vehicles came with your group :-) It was a result of circumstance really, The first lane I wrote to Powys they suggested was beyond repair (Rhos Lane), the second, Shropshire didnt want repaired, Hereford gave permission to work on two, but they were small and (at the moment) No Through Routes, and three others they want a site meeting on first, so after all the time taken sorting that out, we were left really with a drive clearing "things that got in the way". The lane where the Farmer himself was the major obstruction, (said was not a road) , I have confirmed is, but having only seen it once, was difficult to estimate the work required. With 18 people it did not take too long. Few people will comit themselves beforehand, so the number turning up was not known. Also large groups make it harder to get to know people. Another time we will get to know 3 or 4 new faces at a time? When we split, we turned right into Ackwood Lane and had we got there earlier we would have all been fully occupied there for many many hours! I just regret we did not go there first, when are you coming back? :-) Still it was a nice drive. Chris PS I have since spoken With Bob Kinghorn, Powys HA 01 597 826 646. It is the C1081, 144 728 via 152 729 to 156 729. He will copy me with the letter he sends to the Landowner. Mike can claim aggrevated damages from him for threat of fines etc..... :-) Green Lane day has sorted yet another problem! Also Bob admitted he had nothing to do with the removal of the 5ft gate at Hoddle, C1125, 254 644, So it would appear to be my call to the CLA was successful PPS Spoken to Dr Alan Wood, CLA obstuction hotline 0171 235 0511, fax 4696, Yes he did achieve the desired result by negotiation with the owner Julian Salmon. ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970325 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
Date: 24 Mar 97 15:46:24 EST From: Richard Brownlee <101360.3273@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Daily Mail Map Hi all While browsing around at Sodbury I came across a couple of maps. One was a 1971 Quarter Inch OS map of Wales and the Marches - any use to you Chris (don't worry if not it only cost 15p) The second one seems to be quite interesting - a Daily Mail Motor Road Map of South East England 'showing trunk and other classified roads'. Dated 1948. The scale is 4 miles to one inch so not all roads are marked but I've already found a couple of clearly marked roads that now appear to be on the OS as footpaths or 'white roads'. I would assume that on a map of this scale they would not bother showing private roads. I'll keep you posted Regards Richard ------------------------------[ <- Message 6 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970325 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

I'm all for that. I'm going to contact Jim again and let him know that I am happy to help out more regularly. I would like to see the entire length of the footpath/road border protected. I also saw a lot of misc junk lying around down the road (bits of car, wheels etc) so I will probably clear that up next time I am down there. He mentioned something about a deer hide? Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 17:13:51 -0500 From: Chris Marsden <Byway@compuserve.com> Subject: Daily Mail Map Richard, I would have thought that is quite a useful find. It will have the usuall disclaimer about not neccessarily being a RoW, but due to the scale (was it Lord Widgery said?) are likely to be. Along with other evidence you could be onto something. It may be worth looking at, and in the absence of a sign to the contrary (or stile),........ why shouldn t you use a slightly out of date map? Chris ps Yes please, a 15p map is always worth having. It can show interesting changes. (must look in loft see if I have any old rallying OS maps circa 1968) If any one is getting duplicate copies or returned mail from List, please let me know, I think my WinCim s/w is playing up. ------------------------------[ <- Message 9 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 970325 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]
Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 22:27:21 +0000 From: Peter Bradley <hm50@dial.pipex.com> Subject: Veh RoW on UCR (NYCC) I am sending the following plainly worded letter tomorrow to Burns at NYCC, to try and establish a similarly plainly worded reply. His last letter stated : " .. unmade green lanes do not have public vehicular rights ...." Vague isn't it ? I mean, what is an "unmade green lane" ? Well, the one in question is a UCR, and his colleague in RoW, Wadkins, told me to my face: "Yes, you can drive down this road, legally, but, and I shouldn't really tell you this, you may only cross the dam from one lane to the next". I shouldn't really tell you ???!!! What ? This route is RT > Right of Access > UCR ! Even a "unsuitable for ..." sign at one end. In view of the fact that I have now been told by three sources that he (Burns) is a member of the RA, (plus very anti-vehRoW) :- Is there any way of finding out whether or not an individual is a member of GLEAM ? ---------------------------------------------------- Dear Mr Burns YOUR LETTER 6th MARCH 1997 With further reference to your letter, and in particular the third paragraph therein, perhaps you would be good enough to let me have your answer to the following question: What general stance does the County Council take with regard to vehicular rights on Unclassified County Roads which remain untarred ? I look forward to receiving your reply shortly. Yours sincerely etc ---------------------------------------------------- If I'm duplicating previous work by others then please tell me.
