Chris,
The bit of UCR you're on about is tarred, although shown white on
the OS maps. It is a bit steep, narrow and rough where the Byway joins it
though.
The new bit is the drive to their house (I suspect that the NE bit of the Y
that was stopped up should have been on this route to start with - one of the
many Def. Map cock-ups I think occurred in this area.) As for why they wanted
them stopped up and diverted - they'd turned the bit between their buildings
and house into a garden and washing-line area, and they didn't want to cut
the fence between their's and their neighbour's field. I triggered the
application, by stopping before driving through their washing and asking them
to remove it so that I could procede, about 4 years ago. My complaining to
the Highways Authority several times about the fence didn't help, or get it
removed. The lessons are:
1. Don't be a gentleman.
2. Abate obstructions if they're not not removed fairly soon after your
complaint.
3. USE IT OR LOOSE IT!!! (No use is no use at all in the Magistrates Court.)
Did you enjoy your exploring in Wales at the weekend?
Regards
Charlie.

]Date: Mon, 19 May 1997 02:46:04 -0400 From: Chris Marsden <Byway@compuserve.com> Subject: Gates on RUPPS Hi, After a pleasant weekend looking at mainly RUPPS in Aberystwyth area, I was surprised at the number of 5 foot gates that have been put on RUPPS. I can not see the minimum width stated for gates on RUPPS. Anyone offer any assistance? I wonder how many users of these RUPPS will be aware that the vast majority are likely to be downgraded to bridleway when the time comes for reclass, or is there any reason for optimism?
