He's preaching to the con(per?)verted.

A letter to the RA chairman pointing out that the usage of lanes is many
hundreds or proabably thousands of times more by Farmers, Contractors, Geo
research, Forestry, Electricty Boards, (note how many of their Landrovers
have winches!) Gas, BT, rural mail delivery, Shooting, Military, Vets, Milk
Tankers, Fox Hunt supporters and sabbys, police, badger baiters, residents,
etc etc. than all leisure users put together, therefore how has he proven
that it is leisure vehicles causing his "problem", that the reduction of a
fraction of 1% of total off-tarmac driving would be unnoticable, that this
RUPP > byway suggestion will not lead to any increase in leisure use, only
possibly more thinly spread about! Where are his photos actually taken,
has he reported it to the RoW people and do they accept it is leisure
vehicles? Will the CC's RoW depts be invited to confirm the crap (techno
speak for gleam gabble) is all crap.

Said Chairman just might ask a few pertinent questions. Livens the meeting
up to get some debate, awfully boring if everyone agrees, and might make
one or two question the 'facts' fed to them?

I think in years to come, humps will be seen as an incredibly stupid time
wasting dangerous idea, confined to history. It causes an uncomfortable
ride, dangerous for bikes and ambulance patients, for vehicles and
underground plant, and must cause much wasted fuel thus noise and emission
pollution. Yet I can see the merit of the argument for roads designed by
'the rolling drunken Englishman' long before the Romans and only 'improved'
in recent years to allow an increase in speed, to be limited to a speed a
little more in keeping with it design specification. Thereby reducing
danger to persons and animals. Rather than be de-improved by inverse
pot-holes, the future will possibly be enforced lower speed limits on the
'quiet roads' by electronic means. Sort of 25mph = a warning sign flashes,
30mph = a flash..... This will affect motor events. Is it a probable or
inevitable outcome? Would it mean country lanes are then less attractive
than A roads for commuting, but if still beneficial, and spreads the load,
is it acceptable?

  Chris,

The said local Chairman is confirmed anti vehicle and anti horse. I don't
think anything sort of a full frontal lobotomy would induce her to change her
views!

Happy New Year,

Howard

Recently my mother unearthed three maps of the Scottish border area, dating
from the first quarter of the century they look as if they might be of use
to anyone researching RoW in that area. One of them goes down as far as
Penrith, so might be of use to those involved in that area too. Please
contact me directly only if they will be of use (Owen?). She is unwilling
to let go of them, as there are a few 'family notes' on them - she grew up
in that area.

OK, I've got the 'surgical instruments', whose got the anaesthetic?
Sadly I won't be able to get to the meeting, but I m sure somebody will -
and make it a more lively event, there is nothing like a bit of gentle
questioning from the floor to uncover the weaknesses in an argument.

P.S. The best place to sit if one is going to ask awkward questions (as if
you would) is near the middle of the crowd. Two reasons, that's the place
the speaker will be focussing their attention on, and that's where they
least expect any opposing questions to come from. A tip gleaned from tow
well know members of parliament, messers Benn & Powell - they both HATED
questions difficult questions from that quarter!!!

A New World Record for Hypocrisy

Landowner blames hobby drivers for destroying countryside

Local driver Miss Rebecca Dorter said today
'What a cheek. Who has done more damage to the English countryside, landowners
or landrovers? Just have a look for yourselves. Who is it that grubs out the
hedges, sprays the verges, ploughs the footpaths, shoots the hawks, and fills
the shops with tainted beef? Look to the beam in your own eye, Mr landowner
Gardiner, before you start inventing motes in others'.

Cheers, tim

'old' (say 1970 ish) OS maps of Staffordshire to see what RUPPs were

I may have one or two of interest, if you would like to call round.
