I have just picked this off the Manchester University Libary
distribution list.

It might be of interest to some of you.

   News heritage in peril

THE days of poring over yellowing newspaper files in a small
number of specialist locations could be numbered. Within five
years, if the Heritage Lottery Fund comes up with enough cash,
any newspaper ever printed in Britain will be accessible via
       computer terminals in local libraries.

The pioneering scheme to save and digitise Britain's newspaper
heritage, Newsplan, is backed by a team of key figures from the
libraries and the newspaper industry, headed by Ann Matheson,
the keeper of printed books, Scotland. They need up to stlg14
million, first to photograph the archive and then to digitise
       the microfilm.

It all started 12 years ago when 10 regional libraries banded
together under the aegis of the British Library newspaper
library to track down copies of every paper. They discovered
newspapers printed between 1820 and 1950 could be lost forever
because acid in newsprint causes paper to crumble.

Late last year, a stlg28,000 grant from the lottery fund supported
a feasability study for Newsplan. This has just concluded that
26 per cent of British newspapers are at risk, that is 3,460
titles or the equivalent of 1,700 miles of broadsheet pages.
George Westropp, chairman of the London Press Club, which is
acting as a forum for Newsplan, estimates that the main project
will cost between stlg12 and stlg14 million.

In March, the Newsplan team will apply again to the lottery
fund for support for about 75 per cent of the project's cost.
"As the fund financed our initial study, and Newsplan is the
only truly national heritage project before it at the moment,
we are very optimistic," says Dennis Griffiths, team member and
chairman of the British Library newspaper library committee. He
says the team is confident that libraries, the newspaper
industry, advertisers and suppliers will find the remaining
       stlg3.5 million.

Over the next five years, with the necessary support, all
papers will be put on microfilm by newspaper libraries at
Colindale, Aberystwyth and Edinburgh, a difficult task with
old, crumbly papers. Then the microfilm will be scanned into a
digital format that is suitable for any form of future
       technology.

"If all goes according to plan, we'll be up and running by
early autumn," says Griffiths. "Then we'll be on our way
towards a unique and vital achievement."

Does anyone out there want copies of the photos I took of Weston Park 1998,
as they will soon be leaving my web site. If you do, then let me know by

OK, so now we are going to go after the liars.

There are people on the List who have been to PIs. There are people on the
List who have read GLEAM letters in their local parrot-cage liner and
thought 'Hang ON'!.

What we need to do is to collate these into a file which can then be used
against them in any forum where they dare to stick their head. So think
about such instances, try and ignore the general tubthumping tone and the
aggression that they showed, strip it down to the basics.

1. Who was it.
2. In what forum did they say/print it?
3. When - as accurately as you can but within 200 years seems to be their
standard of accuracy, lets make it ours.

i say its time to kick ass, as my colonial friends would say. If we dont
get the show on the road NOW we will lose the lot without a murmur. Look
at what happened to the gun enthusiasts and they were a lot more organised
than we were.

I'll do the collation, you mail me the deatils. Pass this around.

73s and 88s
