Taking the scenic route into work to find some blocked roads is mandatory in weather like this. I was trundling down a hill which was covered in hard packed snow, gently blasting the (air :-)) horns before the blind bends. After one bend I found a woman trying to get her escort out of a small drift. She claimed to be so scared by the horns as she thought it was a juggernaut that she pulled over as far as she could... Once stopped she couldn't get going again so I had to pull her to the top of the hill. Do I feel superior now or what! This afternoon is a definite skive off work early to drive as high as I can up Butser Hill & go sledging. After all I've got to prove to my insurance company that I'm not that old! The XCLs were originally a 'sand tyre' which was popularised by military
use and found favour with some off roaders both leisure and commercial
because of their tall section which in muddy rutted tracks had the ability to
bite down through the mud to the hard surface beneath and thus maintain
traction. They would make about 13% difference to gearing (normal 750 x
16s only 11.5% but XCL have a taller section and therefore rolling
diameter). I'm not aware of them being available as remoulds.
A lot of people waste money with tyres. First accept that there is no
compromise tyre at all. For every gain in off raod ability there is a
corresponding loss in on road ability whether it be measured in mileage,
grip or noise. Secondly if you cannot afford the ideal which is two or even
three sets of tyres on rims for the different uses you may put your vehicle
to decide which is your main use and buy accordingly then put up with the
shortcomings in other departments.
We are having much success with a 'chunky' BF mud terrain patterned
remould which is available from our wholesalers in both 205 x 26 and 750 x
16 from 32.95 + vat for the smaller size. They are giveing reasonable
wear, superb grip and if you damage one on rocks or kerb you are
loosing a fairly small amount of value.

I would have to argue with this!
My dad has recently fitted a stainless exhaust to his Rover P5B (with
V8) and it now sound gorgeous - has me salivating every time I hear
it.... but then I am like that!
I also know of a LR 90 with V8 + SS exhaust and it also sounds
wonderful - especially when "working" round the farm....
IMHO go for it... get a SS, you (probably) won't regret it.....

You have to accept the basic principle with tyres that there simply is
NO COMPROMISE. It's a total trade off between on and off road credits.
Sounds like you have more experience than most with XCLs, and I would
sum that up by saying that they are good at getting down to where the
grip is, providing of course that there is grip down there somewhere.
All open treads are noisey on road.

I've previously converted a VW Kombi back in '84 and then took it across the Sahara from The Gambia via Mali, Niger, and Algeria in '90... interesting... I now would like to construct something a little more able to reach the parts most campervans cannot, and I've been thinking pretty seriously about the FC101 ambulance. It seems that I can purchase an ex-military vehicle, originally manufactured in '72 (???) for about 5000 pounds, but what would I then be letting myself in for? I suppose you have an Air Con compressor powering the horns?
It is good to see that this (rare) habit is used by one so young! Most
people think horns are just for being rude, and react to them accordingly.
I, for one, like to know if traffic is approaching from the other side of a
blind bend. It is a shame that tractors never use them!
In Europe, use of horns is much more liberal, and reaction to their use
seems less likely to provoke paranoid or homicidal responses.

Last time I bought a regualtor it was about 6 GBP, so being a tight fisted student, I looked in my Maplin catalogue and found a chip that will do the job for a lot less. Subject: FOR SALE(?) - 650x16 Military wheels&tyres
I have, sitting in my garage, a stack of five (mixed) military-ish
tyres - off my S3 ltwt.
I have : 2 - Firestone SATs
2 - Michelins
1 - er, remould of some description!
all 'on the wheel' (16").
I should confess that they are pretty run down (balding), but the
wheels are OK, i.e. buy the wheels and get a set of tyres free!
Anyone got any idea as to their worth? Fiver, the lot? No,
seriously. I'm open to offers, if there are any. You never know your
luck - as I'm trying to get rid of them!
I changed all five in December of last year for Falken 23585 radials
on 16 inch white Mangels. What a tart! Needless to say, the ride is
unbelievable compared to the previous set.
Where I'm going to put the spare is a bit of a problem as I don't
think my visibility will be any good if I plonk it on the
bonnet. Anyone got any experience in fittings for the inside (ie
behind the driver seat for example?
Cheery bye
Graeme
PS good to see the list picking up again - well done Bill for the
changeover! A few of us (well me anyway) got a bit worried for a
minute that the LandyNet would be finished......[wipes tear from
eye]!!!!
PPS I'm Bristol based if anyones interested in the wheels (with FREE TYRES!)

>Where I'm going to put the spare is a bit of a problem..................
The other reason for not putting the spare on the bonnet is that it is
extremely heavy!
I fitted a set of 7.50x16 tyres to 5 new Mangels 16x7 wheels, and decided to
put the spare inside, behind the crew bulkhead. The thought of the bonnet
coming down on my head gave me the horrors.
On my SIII 88" there is pair of galvanised brackets on the centre rear of
the bulkhead, just at the right height, with a useable hole. I actually used
a bottle screw (from my boating ditty box) attached to this bracket, passing
through the centre of the wheel and then to a 12" length of 2"x1" timber
placed across the wheel centre. The bottle screw allows the arrangement to
be tightened against the bulkhead, where it remains dry, clean and secure.
Cost was next to nothing.
Of course you must then ensure that your bonnet latch is perfectly adjusted,
because, without the spare to hold it down, wind can lift it up, up and away.

Quickly checking his new (secondhand) parts manual, for the series IIa he
finds the very thing. Yes, its the official LR spare wheel bracket, for
fitting to that convientlly placed galvanized bracket with the two holes
in it, centrally behind the driver.(as described by David Olley)
So for what its worth (if they're still available) her are the part No.
Clamp for spare wheel 303847
Tie bar 302933
Wing Nut 302934
and one 1/4" UNF bolt 1" long
No idea of the price, but not as cheap as David's suggestion

It's easy. Depending on the make the instructions should be in the box
and are clear. Make sure that you select 4 x 4 for at least one journey
a week to maintain the splash lubrication to the upper swivel pin and
it's railko bush housing. My usual advice is to ONLY select 4 x 2 for
that rare long journey when the fuel saving may be apparent.

Use a relay for anything extra on the electrics.
