Subject: Aluminium Checker-plate

Does anybody know of a cheap source of aluminium checker-plate (as
used for wing protectors etc.) as I'm thinking of redesigning the
dash-bourd of my SII so that it runs the whole width of the bulkhead
using the checker-plate as a basis ('cos it looks good, doesn't rust
and doesn't need painting!). Any ideas?

Be aware that the dash is steel, and will set up a galva-thingy reaction
with the aluminium checkerplate - use plastic spacers to hold the 'plate
away from the bulkhead.

Try looking for a builders merchant or other wholesaler.

James,

An aluminium stock holder is what you want. If you look in yellow pages under "non-ferrous metals/stockholders" you should find
one in your area. Most keep Checker-plate or will order it in. The price isn't usually to bad either.

last weekend I was distressed to find that replacement sidelight units I
put in my series 3 a year ago were corroding and failing. There seems to be
fundamental problems with the old Lucas ones that died last year and
Craddocsk finest which I believe are also Lucas, Has anyone any idea on
where to get good sidelights, are the military ones any better?

Also no one responded to my previous thing about Capstan winches, has
nobody out there got a working one they use? I ahave antied up for a proper
rope, all =A3150 worth of it and am going playing this weekend, any tips
would be appreciated.

Regards,

Kevan Shaw

David, I got a 20mm mattpolyester braided rope 30M long. I read David
Boyer's article in LRO last year, I was hoping for some real life
experiences ! his illustrations and text sounded like it was all staged in
ideal conditions! I am offnto the mud on Sunday so I would like to know
things like how often I can expect to break shearpins!

Thanks

Kevan Shaw

People subscribing to the list often ask for information on tyres which
is why I copied it. One could argue that many threads are thin
especially from newbies but as a professional as well as an enthusist in
the Land Rover trade I still sit here trying to be helpful to others
with less experience even when the topic is 'thin' !

What is the 'correct' principle with the list ? Should every question
receive a personal reply ? When I subscribed to the States lists they
were full of "Who's going to be in Yellow Creek on Sunday afternoon"
type questions. Now that's 'thin' but I didn't notice any complaints.

Incidently your re quoted header consumed as much bandwidth as the whole
of my reply !!!!!
