Subject: Re: Voltage regulator output / gauges

Many automotive gauges are hot wire types whose output depends not
only on the current through them (controlled by the sender unit) but
also on the ambient temperature. The current through them (and their
reading) also depends on the battery voltage.

The regulator is a bi-metallic strip fixed at one end and fitted at
the free end with a contact. It is wrapped with a heater wire,
connected so that as the contact makes and breaks so does the current
through the heater. This is self-sustaining and results in on and off
times in the region of a few seconds or so and it is this on to off
ratio which provides the regulated output via the afore-mentioned
contact. The on to off ratio is also dependent on the ambient
temperature and the battery voltage and provides compensation for the
gauges. The gauges have time constants which are long enough for the
switching not to be noticed.

Whilst the construction may not be exactly as described, the principle
is. I do not know the type of gauge about which the query was made,
being only an interested member with a son who is keen to acquire a
Landrover, but I hope the above may be of help.

Regards

IMHO (for what it's worth), if a query is posted to the list, then I post the
reply back to the list (almost never cc'ing it personally), on the basis that
others may want to know the answer as well, and the poster is more than likely
to be reading the list anyway..Does this make sense?

We sell a replacment unit which is plastic backed and therefore no
corrosion @ 4.95 ukp ea + vat + p&p. Sold hundreds and NEVER had a
complaint !

Winching has been extensively cover by the LRO through numerous
publications. I guess it not a subject that many feel they can add to.
You wrap around a rope, switch it on and move a heavy object. There are
numerous skills or rather techniques involved but most boil down to the
logic of fulcrums and leverage, not forgetting the obvious safety
aspects.
PS If your Land Rover isn't the heaviest object best anchor it down
first :^)
