Date: Sun, 18 Feb 1996 21:14:28 +0000 From: Kevan Shaw <kevan@krshaw.demon.co.uk> Subject: Very Muddy I went out today to the Don Coyote site with the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club and we all had a good time . I managed to get seriously stuck several times principally because of the tyres which are at present 205R16 Michelin patern remoulds are just not good enough in mud which it is so slippery in places it is difficult standing up! There is nothing much to tie off to so most recoveries were by towing, one particular knobbley tyred V8 defender trials motor was most frequent rescuer! I did get one chance to use the capstan winch pulling a series 3 over the top of a particularly steep and greasy bank and it was pretty good and a lot quicker than a drum winch to get into action. There was a good and varied turn out, every possible short whelbase landie, lots of trials motors three 101s and a forward control 2B camper where many regulars were ensconced chatting! I was also held to ransome on on recovery by Kenny who runs the club shop. He insisted I bought something before allowing the recovery rope to be hooked up! From: Andrew Witham <andrew@rescue.demon.co.uk>
It's not been a good week - except that I discovered this group 12 hours
after my 90TD died.
Less than 6 weeks after a major service at my local landRover agents, I
noticed a whine from the Turbo. As we had a relative in hospital with
Cancer, and we were between visits, I did not give the noise much
consideration.
10 miles later, while taking a right turn, the vehicle accelerated as I
took my foot off the pedal.
400 yards later the engine raced away and I had to kill the ignition,
ending up surrounded by clouds of dense white smoke.
I'm not engine technical - but it doesn't look hopeful. Major job -
still investigating - say my local Landie man.
Having just been photographed at an off-road school near Hereford for
LRO magazine this happens - and it's going to snow tonight too!
Condolences in my hour of greif, please
The moral is 'listen to what the engine is saying' - I guess!
Andrew
