So I know it wasn't any of you, but last night when I went to take my thermostat off to test it's operating temperature I found upon opening the housing that it was missing alltogether. I assume this means that I'm always running cold as the cooling system will continually cool my engine regardless of how cold it gets.James O'shea SAC3JNO@Cardiff.ac.uk ------------------------------[ <- Message 2 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960221 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

The annual trip to the Old Sodbury bring & buy sale is a must for
those with older series vehicles.

Subject: steering relay
Does the steering relay (later type with drain and fill holes) only
fill and drain oil on the bolts on the drivers side (in line with the
cast lump), or will any of the three bolts do?
The steering feels ok at the moment, but I want to make sure.
Steve

Regarding the free road tax for vehicles >25 years, I phoned the DVLA, which connected me to dozens of recorded announcements finally telling me to wait until a cheque arrives with the refund. That was about 6 weeks ago and nothing has happened. Has anyone received a refund yet????? Miles Smith Amersham Bucks Email: miles.smith@telewest.co.uk P.S. I am thinking about buying some 750 x 16 Super Mud Pluggas, and have heard they are pretty poor on tarmac, is this true? are they very noisey? ------------------------------[ <- Message 5 -> end | Table of Contents | <- Digest 960221 -> | Search Archive Index | <- Browser -> ]

On another interesting related note, I had a thermostat in my car (fitted new 8 months ago), but in this cold weather, had noticed that although the engine and car warmed up (temp guage in the middle of scale), when I got onto the motorway and sustained 70 to 80 mph, the guage slowly begun to drop, and the heater went colder. I guessed the the hysteresis of the thermostat wasn't up to scratch, and so replaced the thermostat with a genuine parts job. Now it stays in the middle of the guage and my heater is hot (Well, as hot as a LR gets!). :-). Date: Tue, 20 Feb 1996 16:53:08 GMT From: Gerald Tan <gtan@bbchw.demon.co.uk> Subject: Re: Unlocking the central diff-lock As taught to me by the Land Rover Experience tutor: When trying to dis-engage the central diff, you move the lever to "unlock", and the diff lock light still stays on. This is because the diff lock components are still strained (usually due to some wind up present). Some people favour stopping, and reversing a few yards, and this normally eases the components enough to allow the pin to spring back. There is an alternative method (very useful say when going from snow-packed motorway (freeway) to dry tarmac on the move. 1. De-select diff-lock. 2. Reduce speed enough to engage a lower gear (2nd is quite good). 3. Lift off the throttle completely, and then floor it. 2 secs on, 3 secs off. 4. Repeat step 3 until diff lock light extinguishes. Somewhere in that free-travel, the diff-lock pin will find equilibrium, and pop-out. It normally works after 3 attempts.
