Subject: Front Axle Replacement ?
Probably like many other LR owners I am not alone in having the front
swivels leaking EP 90 everywhere. However I feel it's time to do
somehting
positive (rather than just keep them topped up !). Someone has
recommended
to me that the easiest way to cure this is to replace the whole
front axle
on my 88" SIII with say a military one (the sort with gaiters over
the swivels).
This avoids the required rebuild of each swivel housing (may as well
do the
bearings while they are off, oh and replace the springs) and could
work out
chraper.
Does this sound like a sensible proposition ?
Will I fail the MOT with leaking swivels ?
Does anyone know what a secondhand front axle could cost ?
Is it worth going to Sodbury ?
Will it snow again soon !!!!!!??????
Many thanks

Subject: Valve Grinding
Following on from Gerald Tan's tips, I found that the quickest and
easiest way to remove the very hard carbon deposits from valve stems was
to put the valve into an electric drill (mounted in a horixontal bench
stand) and carefully use the tip of a screwdriver to scrape the deposits
off the rapidly spinning valve. I know this sounds a bit extreme, but no
harm comes to the valve if done carefully. Final finishing can be done
with emery cloth. Of course the actual seating face is not touched -
this is dealt with when using lapping paste.

Yes, I used a butter knife with the valve in a pillar drill!! If you have the means and the money, then it's not difficult to refurbish the front ends of an axle. There are those that would tell you as a temporary measure to stop the swivels leaking is to grease the bearings instead of EP90, but I haven't any personal experience of doing this. Opinions on the list?
