Subject: Re:Sleeping on an Africa Expedition

Hi all

David (Green with envy) wrote that he had some Africa experience. So my
question to David and to all and sundry is what is the best thing to do
about sleeping. I assume that a rooftop tent is the best but has anyone
else got any suggestions? Or any hints on making a budget (that's a
nice way of saying 'cheap') rooftop tent.

Is is generally safe to simply park by the roadisde and pitch tent or
should all nights be spent in villages?

If anyone has any expedition equipment that they are selling then I am
in the market.

Cheers, one depressed Scotsman.

I bought a front axle, complete with wheel nuts, FWH, diff, brakes, the
lot for 75 quid.

Brooklyn wanted something stupid like 230 quid for the same setup. Gulp.

Hope this hasn't depressed you too much, but for 230 quid I would
rebuild the swivels, as gaiters don't stop the leaks, they just hide
then for a little while.

Subject: Overdrive noises

HI, on Friday I saw a LR for sale on my way to work and I had bought
it by lunch time..

It is a SIII 109 Safari, manufactured 1979 and used by the MOD untill 1986
The engine is the 2.25 petrol and an overdrive is fitted.

The exhaust is blowing at the manifold. The front leafs are awfully
rusty and deformed and will obviously need changing. The bulkhead has
rot around the forced ventalation flaps and windscreen hinges.
And there is moss growing in the window runners that prompted me to
name the LR 'the greenhouse'. ;-)

However the chasis apears pretty good, as is most of the bodywork.

One question I have is about the Overdrive. When enganged it emits a
regular banging noise that can be felt through the stick. The
frequency of the noise increases with speed although the overdrive
stills seems to work ok. Any ideas?

Ben.

Subject: Re: Front Axle- Grease/EP 90

My swivels have been leaking for the last couple of years.
I was advised against using grease in them, but I now use a mixture of
grease and EP-90.
This doesn't seem to leak (or not as quickly), and there doesn't seem to
be any problems with wear in the swivels (yet).
I don't think that leaking swivels will fail the MOT- mine haven't, but
there is a suggestion (LRO mag.- this month p.148) about using Arladite
to repair the pitting which causes the leak- I can't say if this works.

Subject: 110 questions

     Hi all,

     I've just acquired my first and long awaited L-R - a '87 110 Station
Wagon fitted with a 2.5 non-turbo diesel. It originally belonged to
the RAF but has spent the last 2 years living on a farmyard somewhere
in deepest Somerset. I've spent two weeks cleaning off about half a
ton of manure from the chassis and am now going through the mechanics.
I'd be really grateful for an answer to the following :-

1.) The back of the vehicle lists permanently to port - I'm guessing
that the rear springs need replacing - is it a relatively easy job ??
do I need any special tools ??

2.) The speedo doesn't work - the speedometer itself is ok as is the
cable and it seems to fit ok into the LT77 gearbox - however no
movement on the dial while driving - is there a cog in the gearbox to
drive the cable - and if so can it be replaced without dismantling the
     'box ??

I'm planning to go to the Sodbury Sortout - are there any more L-R
autojumbles happening in SW England ?

     Happy Rovering

All,

Has anyone out there with a V6 or V8 got any comments on the type of rear
(leaf) springs to use. The clamps on mine (V6) have seen better days and
the springs themselves seem to have started to splay out. Is this
because of the extra power as the fronts are OK ?.

Trefor.

has anyone seen this program, i thought it was quite good esp with the series
3 the vet was driving last night (my first time i watched it).

that was until the glaring continuity error.

since when even on full whack have you been able to hear a radio in a land
rover (esp series) before it arrives. i mean i ask you :-)

danny
p.s.
a note of cation, after having the engine out for a clutch change it has been
running for a week and thursday night we had a disaster (disco tdi) a pipe
for the cooling system came off and sprayed green water (land rovers
anti-freeze is snot green) all over the engine compartment. My word of caution
is that i have got very lazy in the disco, it tells when it wants fuel and
tells me when its too hot, but i should not have let it get there in the
first place. or is this land rovers way of telling you not to get too
complacent :-)

The purpose for oil to be in the swivels is to splash supply the upper
swivel bearings (railko bushes) with oil aswell as supply the bearings.
With grease this doesn't happen and they wear very quickly when dry.
There's no substitute for doing the job correctly once, then forget it
for another 15/20 years. One dodge that is available is to 'araldite'
the swivel balls to give the seals a good surface to eliminate leaks,
but I don't know how long this lasts for. The technique is to apply
araldite to a cleaned ball then smooth it into the pitted areas by
oscillating an old seal all around the ball. Alternatively new balls are
59 ukp each.
